Wow, what an inspiring and wise group we have here. It’s wonderful to hear all these tips and also just the warm bath of compassion or “COVID grace” we can share. Hooray for stretchy clothes that are forgiving of our particular fluctuation tendencies.

Bijou, too funny!

Kelly and LaPed, closet churn can indeed result from “tiring of a style” or “less tolerance of discomfort” or the dreaded “closet shrink.”

Janet, thanks for sharing your photo. The pug is so cute and it can be hard to look back to times we’ve lost (I hate those Facebook reminders of photos from years past.). But I see your same radiant smile from then to now.

Shiny, what a terrible story about your feet! It’s a cautionary tale!

DonnaF, walking is wonderful for heart and mind.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I stopped then reduced my exercise walking — and figured out that I had gained four or five pounds. It doesn’t sound like much, but I am only 5’ 1” and the extra weight made my bras feel like tourniquets particularly by the end of the day. Yuck! I started to ramp up my walking feeling I had extra time since I was no longer driving to a track. It took until December to get that weight off!

But by mid-December my knees were hurting. Badly. I contacted my doctor who recommended the Brooks Addictions I used to wear but gave up for some unknown reason. What a difference. The pain disappeared almost instantaneously. Today I added a heel insert to make them fit a little better. Got some knee pain. Goodby insert.

So with hill walking about 1.5 hr/day— 9 hr/wk since I do 6 days, I have been losing about a pound a month and continuing to eat pizza and pasta and drink wine and beer with my husband.

I’ve just noticed the cups have become too big on a couple of exercise bras but not on my regular ones. I think it’s a matter of their cut/style. Some clothing is just more forgiving but it’s hard to tell at the time of purchase. With shoes, adding or removing inserts or pads to shoes or feet can make a difference.

Where do I begin. Ha ha!

Let's start with the feet: I was dx'ed with a severe B12 deficiency 7 years ago. By the time it was dx'ed, I had nerve damage particularly in my feet. Basically, I had been walking around for years in shoes that did not fit-- because I couldn't feel my feet. Ugh. Anyway, the doctors thought the damage was going to be permanent, but I'm happy to say, my nerves woke up again! And whoa.... now my feet are so sensitive! So yeah, shoes matter, and yes my feet are super fussy.

When I was diagnosed, the doctor told me to expect weight gain with treatment, and told me I could stand to gain weight. I was also banned from any sort of exercise until the nerve damage heeled. I also was in the height of perimenopause with hot flashes and middle-aged spread and all of that. And yep I gained weight! I settled in at a "new normal" higher weight. It was tough to get used to it, but I kept telling myself the extra body fat plumped out the wrinkles, and made me have more "presence" in the world.

When the pandemic hit, I hadn't stepped on a scale in two years. Eating out less and cooking more at home definitely helped, but no major changes seen with how clothes fit.

Eventually for stress relief and sanity the husband and I started hiking 3-4x's a week, going longer and longer and with more challenging hikes. Then in January I signed up for the 52 Hike Challenge (hike 52 times in a year), which we completed a week ago!! I started to notice my leggings were slipping down, and I had to tighten my fanny pack, and the extra chin disappeared. I've been wearing bralettes but tried on my bra and realized I am down from a D to a C cup. I still have no idea what my weight started at, but I am going to guess I've lost 10 lbs just from hiking and eating out less over this past year. I finally weighed myself and I've still got a ways to go, but definitely better than two years ago.

I would like to drop another 10 lbs but I'm not going to do it by calorie counting alone. I'm just going to keep hiking and being active. I'm in no rush.

I can't believe the number of people who have changes in feet sizes. Maybe I"m not observant enough or its the type of shoes I wear....always boots or sneakers.
I've been thinking about this thread and it could depend where you put your weight on. I can keep the same dresses and go up and down 3 sizes purely because I dont loose as much weight on the top and I wear loose on the top anyway. I do have to change my jeans as soon as I put on 5 kilos.
Also if you are living in a new country that can affect things. I put on weight both times I lived in Japan.

I am right there with you. I went to a recent doctor appointment and was shocked by how much weight I gained during the pandemic, despite exercising the whole time. I have never gained so much weight in such a short time; it turns out all that "everyday life" activity pre-pandemic added up to something important. I knew some of my clothes weren't fitting well but stepping on the scale was a harsh awakening. It's possible that I gained muscle (my legs are especially muscular) but most of the weight is fluff from comfort eating and loads of stress during 2020 and early 2021.

My doctor told me to give myself a lot of "covid grace," which was good advice, I think. She said she had not had a single patient who hadn't faced weight fluctuations during the past year.

The only advice I have is to buy slowly and purchase what fits you now and makes you feel good. And don't get rid of anything just yet; it's too soon to tell.

Oh boy, I think you have lots of company, and I’m definitely in the camp of “did not lose weight during pandemic.” I’ve been trying to make some moderate changes and track my eating for the last couple of months and I think it’s having some effect. I do not own a scale and do not wish to, but I can tell when I’m on the right track or not by how my clothes feel. It’s a good sign that my regular bras from a year ago are not feeling as pinchy in the band as they were this winter.

I’ve had some fairly significant changes over the years in both directions. Most recently a significant size change when I started running a lot (went from roughly a size 10 to a size 6), and well, now I’m back to the 10. In fairness to myself the time in between also saw me through a hysterectomy and menopause, so some changes are not unexpected. But nonetheless, I know when I reach a point where I no longer feel good, and i know carrying excess (for me) weight is not good for my health. Hence my action of late.

For me, changes occur quite gradually and my body keeps the same basic shape — I never lose the hips or the boobs, everything just gets a little smaller or larger. Usually I notice changes in the lower part of my body first, but I do think that since menopause I seem to be holding onto more weight overall in my chest and midsection. Yay. My solution in clothes has mainly been to stick with styles that accommodate a bit of fluctuation. No tight tees, no skinny jeans. No bodycon dresses.

Funny, I was just tackling some digital clutter and cleaning out some old photo files on my computer and ran across this picture (amongst others) from when I was fitter 8 years ago, and our pugs were still alive. It made me sad in all the ways. I looked good then, sigh.

Pretty minimal changes here, except my feet have gone up about half a size. Probably a long-term change accelerated by pandemic life (barefoot almost all the time). A lot of my older shoes still fit with thinner socks but I’ve been culling all the pairs (mostly 5-6 years old) where my toes are now right at the end.

I *think* my shoulders and upper arms have bulked up a bit, due to playing around with hand weights and being more diligent about isometrics (and lots of yard work!). But it could also be that my tolerance for fitted/constricting has declined.

I think the best way to assess muscle vs. fat is in the mirror. I can definitely tell when my fat is higher--more accurately than the scale. Scales can be deceiving. My weight fluctuates--seasonally and on how much I'm training about #5 lbs. in either direction. My wardrobe churn is usually due to tiring of styles more so than weight fluctuations. The exception is shoes--which I will get rid of even if they fit if they are uncomfortable. That's something I'm not willing to mess around with! Personally, I would wait to let your body settle before getting rid of too much--let your body find it's new set point.

I relate to the foot/shoe issue. About a year and a half ago I started dealing with a small bunion on my right foot that would get inflamed and give me pain. I saw a podiatrist and read up on bunions, etc. and determined that I needed to size up a half-size in my shoes and make sure they were comfortable in the toe box. It has been a process that has taken a good while. But, like Angie, I want to keep my feet happy!!!

I’m a data nerd and have kept a fitness journal for years! I track weight, muscle, fat, bone, and water - charting the numbers once a week and documenting measurements at 6 month intervals. I don’t have any specific numeric goals but strive for consistency. Yoyo-ing is hard on the body and messes with metabolism.

I haven’t seen the inside of a gym (weight training) since March 13, 2020, but July through December 2020 and one month this year - March 2021 - I was swimming 3 x wk. Otherwise we’ve been in lockdown and it’s been walks (7-9k, sometimes more), a little biking, a (very) little running. My weight, stable between ages 30 and 54, has been slowly trending downwards. I’m down from where I was before Coivid. I suspect loss of muscle mass. Thigh and calf measurements are down, and I’m finding my ‘skin suit’ isn’t as snug as before. :-(

It was hard to get used to a change in size, and I still struggle, often choosing a larger size when the smaller is the way to go.

Vis a vis your closet: reassess footwear, since what you describe sounds like something long term. Don’t be too fast to jettison clothes that don’t fit atm, but don’t be adverse to acquiring new things that fit you now. Agree with Angie on underwear update first.

Menopause and an injury gave me a similarly daunting set of body changes. I started with my feet, which had gone up half a size, and in the meantime wore a handful of inexpensive stretchy dresses while I figured the rest out. Just tackle the feet and give yourself time on the rest.

Jessikams - my size and weight fluctuate due to different levels of exercise and how strict I am with my diet and has done most of my adult life. You most certainly are not alone in this. At any point there are likely to be items I am sized out of, either too big or too small, lurking in my wardrobe.

I have moved to a more casual work environment and don't need more heels. I only buy footwear with a heel height of 4cm or less for new purchases. I hope you find sneakers that you like comfy shoes are just the best. I have a bit of an obsession with Nike Air Max 97's - they were designed to look like Japanese bullet trains and are like walking on air. I recently bought the coffee colour for winter and the grey with pink and purple is my 3 year old pair that started this healthy love affair.

Jessikams - you make me laugh at the bra fitting. I went to Beijing on a work trip 2 years ago and my co-worker (originally from China) thought I should get a cheongsam. We went into a store and the lady grabbed me and ran her hands over my body to determine my size. She was accurate, but it was a confronting experience.

Fashintern, yes! Are the changes in my chest measurement due to boob weight gain? Or pectoral muscle swelling? Or back muscle? I just don’t know!

Angie, you know it! Taipei and Hong Kong are bosom buddies when it comes to hectic heat and rain rain rain.

Speaking of bosoms...there are some Triumph lingerie shops near my apartment and they offer measuring. Nothing like practicing Mandarin language skills while a stranger has her hand down my shirt...

I hope you’ve settled in nicely into your new home, Jessikams! Nice to see you back on YLF.

I’m echoing others - please KEEP THE FEET HAPPY :)

Sooooo important, especially in Asia where you walk a lot in hectic heat, right? I get it.

You might want to priortize finding a more comfortable set of bras and knickers. Personally, I find that the right undies are as important as the right shoes.

We all go through smaller and larger body changes throughout our lives. My big change has been my feet - which have always been fussy and hard to fit - but more so with each passing year. I live an urban walking life and walk everywhere, so now - more than ever - I have zero tolerance for uncomfortable shoes.

Not only does muscle weigh more than fat per unit of volume (so you weigh more with the same measurements), it also behaves differently, is less “squishy”. My bust at 36 inches with a high body fat % was shaped differently than it was as a more muscular swimmer, also 36”. Talking to a body-builder friend about rebuilding, I learned that getting those inches back (I’m more like 34” right now) could be either broadening the lats or building a deeper chest. Just one example, but similar all over the body.

My body is constantly changing-since my food and exercize habits depend so much on my workplaces and other life chaos. WFH has been a Huge blessing in that regard!

The best way to know for sure is taking measurements- not just weight. Then you know where things are shifting.

I'd wait to pass things on if you still love them, and are within a size or 2 of fitting. When they become wearable again, you can decide if you still like the fit.

Staysfif, such a thoughtful response. I think you’re right, muscle loss vs fat loss is a whole different ballgame.

COVID weight gain, YES! I would like to say it’s due to my longer hair! Jessikams, I wholeheartedly agree with Rachy. I would start with your shoes. Foot pain from improper shoe fits can throw off alignment and is a recipe for disaster. Among the few shopping tips my mother provided was “never use a SA wearing high heels or uncomfortable looking shoes!” Plus it’s corollary, “always wear shoes that fit comfortably!” Feet have very little fat. If they change, there is little chance, unless it is due to swelling, that you will fit back into your old shoes easily. I had a lisfranc injury a few years ago and am left with a calcium deposit on top of my already high arched feet. I had to eliminate shoes based on how they rubbed against this now permanent bony defect. Also, using custom orthotics, if you choose to do so, alters the fit of shoes.

Next, I would assess where you may have gained fat vs muscle. For example, annually my weight fluctuates 6-9 pounds between cold and warm months, I know that when I gain fat it goes primarily to my thighs and a bit to my calves. Very little goes to my torso, waist or hips. So, trouser fit, mostly leg/thigh fit becomes an issue, I keep two sizes of my favorite pants so I can seamlessly move between them as my weight changes. I have had more time to lift weight, so my arms are more muscular. Some sleeves feel snug. I assume I will not lose that much weight/bulk around my arms, so I am giving snug armed items away. Although I recall Runcarla saying she lost bulk when she had to reduce her weight lifting. My sense is to hold onto your too small items that would possibly fit if you lose some weight (ie., not due to muscle growth), and work on replacing the rest over time.

You’ve just touched a nerve with the sneakers comment—I can’t stand fashion sneakers because they act like they’re going to be all cushiony and cozy, then let me down in the end. I’ve fallen for this twice, first with Sperrys and more recently with this find. This is why I do much better with actual athletic shoes for sneaks.

How do you feel about things between your toes? I can’t wear that kind of thong, but if you can, maybe some of the flip-flops (all but one have thong toes ) from yesterday’s post will work for you. Good luck!

I need to hear this a few times: tend to the feet! I guess I grew up in a family that scrimped and saved, to such an extent that shoes were “fine” until toes were sticking out of holes in the front :)

Maybe I don’t have to scrimp quite that much! My sneakers should certainly be more supportive. I think I have flattened the interior cushioning waaaaay too much.

You know what my issue is too? I don’t enjoy buying “functional shoes” like sneakers. Would much rather buy some crazy colorful sandals or something. But perhaps I can find some crazy fun sneakers that are also pillowy.

Sloper, ah yes, prednisone-buying!
Someone on here said a doctor told them that *all* her patients either lost or gained weight during the pandemic. No one stayed the same.
Due to the extraordinary circumstance, I’d pack away what does not fit but not get rid of it. Wait for a while, a long while. Celebrating with new clothes can be an expensive venture.
I’d tend to the feet right away though.

I’m still slowly creeping towards my weight goal, but at this point the scale doesn’t matter; my real challenge now is body-shaping. I’ve got that sub-q “fluff” that you refer to, and frustratingly less muscle than I had a year ago. I do have things to wear, and am not buying new until some things shake out.

I agree with Rachylou about shoes—they need to fit, and comfortably! Feet are the foundation of everything else we do, so we’ve got to pay attention to them. I know you know that from yoga. When I broke my foot a year ago, it healed incorrectly (we didn’t realize the foot had broken, thought it was just the toe). Half a year ago, when I had custom insoles made to help with the bunion I’d developed, they included an inflexible part under that part of my foot. Instead of wearing them, I preferred to let my foot get stronger. Now the flexibility is almost back to what it was, and I have pain extremely rarely. My advice from this experience is to do what your feet need to be healthy, which may or may not be babying them.

I didn't expect my body to go back to the size it is now. I was a size 10 /12 NZ but due to getting busy, eating more carbs and doing no exercise I went up to a size 14 - 16 NZ for about 2 years. I got rid of my small clothes After a year's study leave and discovering that sugar/processed carbs were causing ill health, I lost weight through cutting out white carbs/sugar and following a strict ashtanga yoga programme of 5 to 6 days a week for an hour to 90 minutes. I lost 15 kilos and am back to a size 10/12 suddenly. I dont actually regret giving away most of my clothes as I think my style has changed a little. There are some clothes that I do regret giving away and I would keep those. I do believe it is good to have some clothes that fit well and so I am happy to have a small wardrobe until my body settles down. I am on the verge of menopause so there might be changes still. Yoga didn't really change my body shape apart from my posture improving and the cardio probably contributing to the weight loss. My arms are thinner and I think I have developed a bit of a bottom (where it was quite flat before) and less of a tummy. If you can afford to have a small wardrobe that fits you now while you wait to see what happens. My shoes didn't really change size. I dont have a lot of shoes anyway as I tend to wear sneakers and boots which I wear out within a year or 2.

It’s so hard to isolate different variables in life, isn’t it? So MUCH going on and changing all the time.

Thank you ALL for sharing your complex personal stories. It is really nice to know this is not just me. Rachy puts it well: “comfort now is a must!” I think the feet do get fussier over time and that will probably never reverse itself. Sounds like many of us are relying on softer and/or lower shoes!
