Well, you seem a woman after my own heart! I do love packing posts, especially minimalist packing posts - and I've never met a striped shirt I didn't love.

Well done!

Sorry for the absence...jet lag caught up with me and I think I spent most of the past 12 hours asleep. Thank you for all of your kind comments.
Approprio - I think it really depends on what you enjoy and the plans you have made. We are not foodies and had no precise plans for long dinners or any dressy events. However, I saw a young woman (American, I think) leaving for a private gondola ride with her boyfriend in a perfectly fitted wool coat and Louboutin heels. While I couldn't imagine bringing all of that with me, I think they were about to get engaged(they had that look) and she wanted to be dressed appropriately.
Unfrumped - you are correct, I never got bored with my clothes. I was able to concentrate on which bus to take or when the museums opened instead of putting together outfits. However, on my first day home, I couldn't wait to put together something interesting to wear.
Greyscale - I never thought about the fact that it was the same silhouette until you mentioned it. However, I guess that this is the basic silhouette that I have always favored and had unconsciously chose my capsule around it. The scarf was a little souvenir that I picked up in the Monoprix in Aix en Provence early in the trip. I could not believe that had a silk scarf in "my" colors for only 20 euros.

Inspiring! I'll keep your capsule in mind next time I travel. I don't know why I don't plan to do the same silhouette (with variations) many days on a trip, and your capsule is so simple and chic. Especially like the Florence outfit - the belt and scarf are great touches.

Fabulous! Love packing capsule ideas.
I think it's eaier not to get bored of clothes when your time and focus is on sight-seeing! I like how the gray ensemble really looks different from the B&W even though they're the same basic items.

Thanks for posting this. I'm planning a minimal travel capsule right now and you're confirming my suspicions: anything really dressy may as well be left at home and there's no point in trying to compete with fashionable locals.

We did the Venice/Florence/Rome circuit a few years ago. It's a wonderful tour.

Thank you everyone!
Sadie - it isn't for everybody but for us the ease of carry on travel outweighs the lack of clothing options. Plus I get really strong fingers from wringing out all of clothes :)
Susie - the scarf was from Nordstrom's a couple of years ago, Angie wore it in this post. http://youlookfab.com/2012/07/.....user-look/
Rachy - that was my exact goal - be comfortable in my clothes and not scream "yes, I am a tourist!" However, I knew I could not compete with the lovely ladies in Rome and Florence. I just told myself that they would also be in jeans and sneakers if they spent their days touring museums and churches. In the end my bag weighed between 20 and 22 pounds depending on whether or not I was carrying some of my husband's stuff. Guys do have it harder - their clothes etc just take up more room. I am a wimp, however, and can not haul more than that comfortably on my back.
Ms. Maven - I was also impressed that the t-shirts held up so well. I think because they were pretty fitted the wrinkles were less noticeable. What really surprised me was that I managed the entire trip without having to wash my jeans. There was a small "incident" with some mixed berry gelato but the tide stain stick took care of it.

DH and I celebrated our 30th anniversary with a 19 day trip that included a 1 week cruise in the Mediterranean and then traveling by train between Rome, Florence and Venice. It was an amazing trip and I am absolutely in love with Italy!

However, on to the important stuff - what did I pack? We had pretty restrictive parameters: No washing machines, everything was washed in a sink and dried on a traveling clothesline. It had to fit in our suitcase style backpacks and weigh less than 26 lbs per our airline (KLM). We do not use rolling luggage because it weighs more and we feel that the backpacks are easier to handle when getting on and off trains and vaporettos. The temperature would range from almost 80 in Palma de Mallorca to 60 in Venice and the weather forecast predicted rain for almost every day of the trip.

I decided on a very simple capsule that relied on layers and a color palette of black, gray and white with some colorful scarves.
Here is what I ended up packing:
4 t-shirts (Old Navy): black gray, black & white stripes, gray & white stripes.
4 camisoles (Uniqlo Airism): fast drying and prolonged the life of the t-shirts.
3 merino v-neck cardigans (Uniqlo): black, charcoal and gray
3 pairs of light weight jeans: black, gray and pale blue
1 pair of shorts (Gap boyfriend): light gray (for the ship)
2 dressy t-shirts (Halogen): black and a black & white print
1 tube skirt (Vince Camuto): black
2 belts: black and white
3 pairs of shoes: black & white Nike's, white moccasin loafers and black ballet flats
3 scarves: assorted colors
1 leather jacket: black, the Spiegal "lemming" jacket
1 packable rain parka (Lands' End)
1 umbrella

Analysis: The skirt and 2 dressier shirts would have been left at home. We were so tired every night that we ate in the buffet on the ship or just ate a simple meal in a caffeine than went straight to bed! Everything else worked out perfectly. The t-shirts, cardigans and jeans provided me with plenty of variation, especially when I could add a scarf. The Nike's were my workhorse shoes but when they were soaked for 36 hours after a driving rain, the loafers were an adequate replacement. Best of all - I told my DH yesterday that I was glad to be able to wear different clothes because I had been in the same 4 t-shirts and 3 cardigans for almost 3 weeks. He looked at me and said, "Really? I never noticed." Success!

Thanks for reading and I have included a few photos, However, most were taken by DH and he hardly ever includes my feet.
1. At the hotel in Civitavecchia before the cruise left.
2. On the ship
3. With tour guides in Pompeii
4. Getting soaked at the Forum
5. St. Peter's Square - waiting for the Pope's Sunday morning appearance.
6.Ready for the day in Florence.
7. Our last day - on the train back to Rome.
