Word to the wise about the space bags someone suggested-- they work, but I've found that the TSA always wants to dig through my dirty laundry and/or undies if I pack it up like this versus regularly . . . just saying.

Great wrap up and evaluation. If you prefer to carry on but want to shop, how about packing plastic space savers with the vacuum seal? Or a foldable duffle from longchamps. Unfolded it doubles as your second carry on.

This is a really nice capsule. I struggle with having pieces that can mix and match for different looks. I want to be able to do this when I grow up! I didn't see it when you posted before you went. I'm glad it worked out well for you. Safe travels!

Last night in Europe and I am exhausted and ready to go home to my husband, cats, wardrobe, home, and routine. A quick update on how my travel wardrobe went. I bought four dresses and a T-shirt on the trip.

Everything I mentioned two posts above but the blue violet pants (I returned them) were packed for this trip. I wore everything except the two tops in finds. The jeans, olive pants, Boden skirt, and both dresses were worn twice, but styled differently. The burgundy skirt was only worn once and the ivory lace top was not worn because I wore my new navy dress out for two suppers instead. I also wore my new orange dress once. Go Team Wear! I would have been fine with what I brought if I hadn’t bought anything and I didn’t miss having another pair of pants.

Overall, the wardrobe comfortably covered the generally lovely (some rain) weather I experienced. I was glad to have the long sleeve navy cotton silk ‘sweater’, and variety in toppers for easy work appropriate layers. Was also thrilled with my footwear selection. My long navy ‘tunic’ is too big and will need to be donated. My rain jacket and umbrella were essentials.

All in all, very pleased with wardrobe. That said, I disliked having a larger suitcase. I had to carry it up and down stairs at the metro and the bag I borrowed didn’t have a side handle so it was awkward (weight was manageable). Definitely prefer carry on size, but I wouldn’t have room for shopping so it was worth the minor inconvenience.

My crossbody purse was also so convenient for having my hands free. I’ll consider it an essential, too.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Based on your recommendation for closed toe shoes, I chose a pair of shooties (almost closed toe) over a second pair of sandals and a canvas sneaker (closed toe). I also hope to go shoe shopping in Lyon and Amsterdam. I also added one more pair of pants.

I was waiting for one more clothing delivery of Banana Republic pants and a v-neck silk cotton sweater (very thin and lightweight) to help finalize my travel business casual capsule. No dressy events. Made a few swaps to add in new purchases (e.g., swapped out navy jacket for new tailored bomber). It looks like I will be checking my bag after all, since I have no real opportunity to do laundry other than a wash in the sink for my exercise gear. Settled on 3 pairs of shoes - navy sandals, camel shooties, and Taos blue wash canvas sneakers. Three pants - crop jeans, olive ankle pants, and blue violet kick flares. Two skirts -- pomegranate pencil skirt and Boden floral pencil skirt. Two dresses -- green MM La Fleur Sarah dress and navy Loft dress. Four toppers -- navy cardigan, navy bomber, olive utility peplum, and burgundy/cream floral cardigan, plus rain jacket. Two scarves. Tops and necklaces are not quite finalized, but these take minimal room. In addition to the cream cross-body purse, I will have a cream and camel work tote from Fossil (no find). That gives every bottom or dress an average of two wears over the trip. I may do one last edit when I pack. Will report back at how it worked out on my return.

Karen, I really like these pants for my casual wardrobe. Thanks for the suggestions! For this trip my jeans will have to fill this role. Very long work days and not much sightseeing time on this trip.

Sterling, still finalizing a few pieces. I am hoping to add a pair of work appropriate pants and I have two on order to hopefully pick from. This might tweak my top selection. The bomber is going to replace the navy blazer (unless there’s room for both). I’ve also added a pair of Taos Star blue canvas casual sneakers. The other shoes are the camel shooties and navy sandals, at least with the current selection.

I just saw this (life has to interfered with my YLF time for a while) and I think it looks cohesive and appropriate. I’m glad you are bringing extra footwear - that is always my problem area when traveling. My unicorn is a shoe with the comfort of a running shoe for10+ mile days with the style of a dressier casual shoe, that fits my wide forefoot and narrowish heel.

Do you have a presentable comfy pant for lounging/ walking? I like Athleta Bettona and metro style (in petites too!) for this

Jussie, I have been debating substituting the Boden skirt for another pair of pants. The beauty of that skirt will be lost on my coworkers. The two other pairs of pants I have aren’t fitting well any more, so I may need to replace them. Thinking possibly a navy ankle pant would mix well with this capsule.

Ooh I like your capsule. Really cohesive and enough detail vs. plain that it’ll be a good balance I think. I agree that those camel shooties will be a good addition. Even just to stave off boredom. I tend to think camel will work better with some of those outfits than black tbh.
My only thought is: do you need one more pair of pants? I feel like that might just give you a lot more variety because jeans and one olive semi-dressy pant just wouldn’t be enough for that length of time imho...... but you say you’re happy to repeat so I know my advice may be irrelevant to you.

Relooked at my shoe wardrobe and think these camel shooties could work as a compromise (instead of cream sandals or nude pumps). Mostly closed, with a bit of an open toe, a low block heel, and very walkable (Rockport Cobb Hill). Tested with the capsule, including green dress, and it works with almost all combinations.

I’m glad I’m posting this with enough time to do some online shoe shopping :). My wardrobe has a gap for dressy closed toe walkable shoes. My pumps aren’t up for the public transit option except my burgundy ones, which may mean switching out the green dress for another. Lots to think about.

I do plan to wear a topper every day. And I’m bringing my green rain jacket as my primary coat.

An additional complication is that this represents almost all of the clothes that fit me, after 75lbs lost. I don’t have longer sleeve tops to swap out or any sweaters and there’s little reason to buy those until the fall because DC is so hot. The good news is that I run hot and don’t mind at all being cold.

My main reason for wearing closed-toe shoes in Paris and other European cities is to protect my feet from dog poop and other street hazards. Your capsule looks lovely. My inclination would be to swap out one of the sleeveless / cap-sleeve tops for something long-sleeved, but I tend to feel chilly even when others don't. Early June is iffy in that part of the world: I've shivered through conferences where I wore my coat indoors and wrapped two scarves around me, and I've sweltered at others because it was 30° C with no air circulation.

Angie, there will be a second pair of shoes (TBD) and running sneakers. I travel pretty minimally. I repeat and rewear frequently. Each bottom would be worn 2-3 times (4 bottoms = 8-12 wears) and each dress 2 times (3-4 wears), so this covers the 14 days I’ll be gone. There are 5 tops and 4 toppers that mostly intermix. I tried on everything yesterday and counted over two weeks of combinations that I liked. I won’t have to repeat the same outfit unless I want to. I probably will add up to two more casual tops for travel days. I’ve traveled with less over longer periods :).

For example, the Boden skirt goes lovely with 4 of 5 tops and three of the four toppers.

ETA: my current wardrobe is very small and I am still rebuilding. This represents 75% of my current wardrobe. Fortunately I don’t mind repeats.

Count how many outfits you will need - TRY THEM ON before you pack them to make sure you like them. Do you plan on wearing outfits twice?

Sisi, thanks for clarifying. That would work well. I am very tempted to find a pair of low block heeled nude pumps, which would fit this capsule well. This is a gap in my wardrobe and could replace the cream sandals on the trip. Would still need to purchase cream sandals for my wardrobe.

I love shoes and choosing the shoes for any trip is my biggest challenge since I limit myself to a carry on. Plus I'm bringing my running sneakers (I may just have to wear those on the plane to have enough room!).

Oh I did not mean sneakers - not my style as well! I was thinking of a pair of pumps for when you are inside air conditioned places. But if you run hot, then you do not need them.

Some Clarks shoes (they fit my wide feet and tend to be good for walking) that I plan to check out on my shoe shopping trip. Note the addition of olive loafers based on Lesley and Sisi's comments.

Sisi, I generally run hot. Given the absence of closed summer appropriate shoes in my wardrobe, that might be a gap I try to fill in any shopping window I have in Europe. I am super excited about the potential for shoe shopping on this trip.

But when I'm out shopping for cream sandals, I might see if I can find a casual sneaker that would work. But they really aren't my style.

Oh, Lesley has already said what I wanted to say about shoes. I run cold, and taking only sandals seems "dangerous" to me, even in June. :)

Lesley, point taken :). However, I've been to both places for extended locations and know that polished sandals will fit right in for these events. Also, my scientific colleagues tend to be oblivious to fashion. The head of one group that I'm visiting wears Birkenstocks every day. I tend to live in sandals from May through August, so generally feel comfortable in them no matter where I am. My only closed foot shoes are booties, which don't fit with this capsule, and pumps which are still pretty open and I wouldn't want to walk on Europe cobblestones in them.
