Thank you, everyone!

I decided to go ahead with the one at Uncommon Goods. The price difference was irksome, but you guys are clearly better at seeing things online than I am. It’s only a 1-time purchase, so I figured the price was ok for the peace of mind of knowing she is getting a nice surprise the first time around. As it turns out, the price difference wasn’t so big after all—the number of dollars was lower than th number of Euros (which are worth more), I had a $5 credit at UG, and shipping is free. Altogether it was $63, right between the original price in euros and the Etsy one.
I appreciate you guys using your Eagle eyes & web-reading skills to help me & my niece.

What a clever and fun design! I would have really liked it a lot if somebody got it to me as a gift.
That said, I prefer the first one for two reasons: 1) it does in fact give you the context. I don't know if I would have got the reference if it did not have the little note 2) It looks very delicate, well-made and sophisticated. The joke could be a bit lost with a more rough, mass-produced item.
So if the first necklace is not in your budget, I would say keep looking keeping these two things in mind.

As @Sarah said - no judgement if you want to go with the 'drop-shipping/ megaseller' approach (not sure if that came across well enough in my previous comment, sorry)! But in that case, you might be able to buy the item for even cheaper from the original shipping site (e.g. Taobao/ Alibaba/ Amazon)

SF, re the "this is at most semi-handmade" vibe I'm getting -- I'm basically looking at the variety of items in the shop (jewelry of several different types, cards, and totebags -- and apparently from the reviews formerly face masks), and thinking about all the different craft techniques a single person would have to master in order to make all of those things by hand, as well as the variety of different pieces of equipment they would need to own or at least have access to. The jewelry itself also appears to involve several distinct techniques/approaches. Seems like a lot for one person! Also looking at the jewelry and thinking through how you would actually make it by hand -- how much time it would take to cut out all that intricate detail in the anatomical heart pendant, for example, vs. the price it's being offered at. Plus the stuff just kinda looks like stuff you see around multiple places.

For what it's worth I think it's totally fine to patronize this shop or others like it! No judgement meant at all -- sincerely. Just responding to your query.

If you are interested in science-themed art from a truly independent creator, this shop popped into my mind:
etsy.com/shop/minouette
It's linocut prints, not jewelry, but there are some feminist-themed pieces. I think her work is gorgeous, and the artist seems like a lovely person (we follow each other on Twitter -- of course, people do lie on the Internet, so maybe I'm being bamboozled!).

@Stag It shows in English for me too but with an option to show the 'original translation' - may just be because I'm on Etsy HK though? If the description seems to make sense without too many issues then the 'seller communication' issue should probably turn out fine after all, but...

If you scroll down to 'Delivery and Return policies' it says it ships from France, yet the shop homepage states 'Belgium' - personally I'm a little wary of such discrepancies, because they suggest a mass-produced 'megaseller'/ drop-shipping approach (to me at least), rather than the 'homemade/ independently curated' small seller vibe of Etsy's original ethos. Don't know whether that sort of thing bothers you within this (gifting) context though?

You guys are right—that one is a mosaic! Thank you for pointing that out.

SarahD8, how are you picking up that vibe from the second Etsy one? That seller replied to me, saying they’d just made up another batch last week. No one in the internet ever lies, but I don’t have much etsyperience, and am feeling kinda stuck.

Zaeobi, French? Interesting—it’s in English here. Sounds like you’re getting the same feel that Sarah picked up?

Echo, I think I’m fine with solid steel for this design, but don’t know if that’s what this is either.

I agree that the etsy piece looks like a mosaic. Additionally, if this matters, the etsy pice says "silver" but nowhere does it describe it as sterling - so it is likely silver tone and not sterling.

I really like the Etsy one, but agree it looks like a mosaic piece , but I'm enamored by that design anyway. Pricey shattered glass one is cool, guess it just depends on how strong a message you want to 'send'. If by chance you are open to simply a very unique, beautiful necklace or bracelet (bit easier to see on the bracelet ) please check out those by gemjoy.com .The stones alone are lovely, but viewed under a *free* smartphone app, it's amazing! There are several 'experiences' they call them, ranging from having a hummingbird, fire-breathing dragon, butterflies atop your stone, among others and they are all included at no charge. I have the gold chain, sea green stone myself and love it. Comes in a velvety pouch, placed inside a lovely sturdy, easy open box. Highly recommend! They have a fb page too, if you'd like a sneak peek. Whatever you decide, I bet she'll love it You have great taste!

Yes, congrats to your niece!

I have to say I am not sure that with the inexpensive Etsy necklace you linked I would "get" the metaphor without further explanation. It looks more mosaic than shattered/cracked to me. (Of course, that could be a good thing -- maybe your niece would prefer a more subtle/private meaning to the piece.)

I don't have experience with this kind of necklace, but I do have some experience with Etsy and my feeling is that when something sounds too cheap to be true it probably is. My guess is that the seller you've linked is simply reselling items (maybe with a bit of "assembly") bought in bulk from AliExpress or the like. Tbh the store with the "sold out" necklace that you linked to seems like the same kind of deal to me.

Sorry to be a cynic! I think it depends on what your priorities are for this gift. Is it important to you that it be handmade? Or more important to find a less spendy dupe of the uncommon goods piece?

Firstly, congrats to your niece!
(ETA: Sorry, hit enter too early!)

That second listing you posted looks promising but the first thing I noticed is that the listing is in French (Etsy auto translates it) - nothing wrong with that per se, but I'd recommend sending the seller a message first with any questions you may have (however minor). This will a) give you a frame of reference for their English proficiency (especially if you're buying as a gift, you want to ensure they understand what you're asking (i.e. to hide the price on the packing slip) before it ships out) & it will b) help quell any fears you may have about ordering through Etsy (I personally feel more confident ordering from someone once I can tell they're a small 'independent' business , instead of an Amazon megaseller hiding behind an Etsy storefront lol).

The other thing to be aware of is that colours may not always be the exact same as on your monitor (especially if it's a handmade item), so I'd recommend asking for follow-up photos if you're wary (i.e. in natural light).

E.g. I bought these clay earrings &, whilst I love them, they're a slightly lighter & duskier shade than the listing photos. But I knew what to expect from the follow-up photos: https://www.etsy.com/hk-en/lis.....y-earrings

My niece’s college graduation is coming up soon, and she is accepted to a Master’s program in engineering. I want to get her a shattered glass necklace.
I got the idea from uncommon goods, which has this one https://www.uncommongoods.com/.....g-necklace

That price seems steep, so I went to Etsy to browse for others, found that there are many there, from over $100 down to this one https://www.etsy.com/listing/9.....ch_click=1

Both have good ratings; the negative comments on the Etsy site are about a different item being larger than expected. But I feel nervous giving her a necklace for the price of a Starbucks tab. I won’t be able to look at it before giving it, as I plan to have it sent directly to her (alternate plan would be to send several to my parents, who will see her, and have Mom pick one, but A. That’s work for mom and B. I generally prefer not yo have her involved in my affairs.

Have you seen one of these necklaces, or do you have experience with shops that sell them?

I’m thinking presentation might make a difference here, but isn’t everything. I picked this one for her a month ago, but it is sold out now. https://www.etsy.com/listing/4.....ng_details
