Oh, that's too bad. Anyway I think it makes sense to ask a good seamstress how mush it will cost to alter them. Some alterations are pretty simple and make a huge difference so your cost may not be that big after all.
I would never go for something like this. My mom makes clothing and I know that even with fitting s it may not work well but without fittings...very slim chance!
I think you best bet for the future is either have a garment custom made locally or have "of the rack" garment altered to fit well. The last option is usually more affordable and produces more predictable results.
Good luck!

Actually, Cynthia just offered me a full refund if I don't like the items! I think I might ask if she will reimburse the tailoring...

@annagybe...maybe. I tried to be accurate. The most major fit problem seems to be that the dress sleeves/straps are too long. The armhole is too low, the neckline is too low etc. Otherwise, the fit isn't bad. I might post pictures to get feedback about whether it looks like it fits otherwise.

I wonder if you would have had better results if you had been professionally measured.

Hi Sveta, you're right...I saw that she had so much positive feedback and figured that the fit would be significant better than off the rack (and I can sometimes find a perfect fit off the rack). Unfortunately, I don't think there's any fit guarantee. The skirt actually does fit reasonably well, it's just not exactly what I was expecting. If taking up the shoulders of the dress fixes the problem, then I'll be reasonably happy. Though, I'm not sure I would order again in the future.

This does not surprise me at all. When you make something custom measurements are just the first step and then you have fittings - often more than once - to get everything right. I think it is almost impossible get the fit right from the measurements alone, especially if the garment is fitted.
Can you return them if she promised you that she can do a good fit from the measurements and she did not?

Ok So I bit the bullet and purchased a dress and skirt...I received them today, and here's the lowdown:

Cynthia (the owner) is nice, and answered the many emails I sent in a prompt fashion. There were a lot of decisions to make and measurements to take, somewhat time consuming.

The turnaround was very fast, less than two weeks from placing the order to receiving it. The pieces looked lovely out of the bag...the style was exactly what I had hoped for.

Unfortunately, the fit was not great. Now, I gave Cynthia my measurements, and it's possible I mis-measured, but it's still disappointing.

The skirt: I will probably wear it as is. It fits at my waist, but there's some extra fabric around the hips and lower tummy (I'm not even sure that the hip is too large per se, it just doesn't fit quite right if that makes sense). I feel it makes me look hippier than I am, but it's still cute (I might post a picture when I get the chance).

The dress: ok, the top really doesn't fit. I think that taking it up in the shoulders *might* solve the problem, but I'm not sure.

So...a mixed experience. By the time I get done altering the dress, it will cost as much as a store bought dress of similar quality. Of course, I got to choose exactly the style and color I wanted...was it worth it? I'll have to get back to you if/when it actually fits me :/
