LOL!!

And you definitely get a chili pepper -- even if "hot" is not your goal (and really, is it the goal of anyone who's out of high school?), you and all of our YLF academics get a chili for heating up your style.

Still laughing, especially at the slightly offended comments offered up below the article.

After 30+ years in teaching in my university, I still think it's funny that so many of my colleagues get offended when their students critique their appearance. Besides, just think of the fun we profs could have by changing our persona every couple of weeks or so. Think I'll try for the espresso cup for next Monday or maybe the pizza slice... Love messing with those young minds!

Mae, thanks for posting this. I laughed until it hurt! I work at a large southern University, shoulder to shoulder with 17 professors AND I'm a part-time student, so I totally get it! Now I have a rating for every one of them. What a hoot.

Very funny article and yes, I've probably seen several examples of each type!

I have checked out the ratemyprofessor site in the past and sadly it is biased towards negative reviews. I guess it makes sense since people will take the net all the time to complain but rarely to offer praise or compliments. I always felt the whole hotness thing on the site is really inappropriate and weird.

Mae, I love the red wine analogy! I could add dry (as in sense of humor, not skin), but "hint of cherries" or "good nose" probably wouldn't work...

I have never looked on RMP. I probably wouldn't even be listed, since I don't teach undergrads. I feel sad for profs who feel like they need to be legitimized by their students (not that anyone is doing that here--I mean profs who review their chili peppers and somehow think that it matters).

Oh, that is too funny. I believe I've encountered each of these academic fashion personas at least once! I think that RateMyProfessor came out while I was in college (or at least had recently expanded to my unversity.) I remember one prof who mentioned being a little offended that there were no chilli peppers next to their name.

I really liked the article-- I think it was playing on the stereotypes of profs who lose their "give a damn" after tenure, or at least the references to age might indicate that. I am not a prof, but have T.A.'ed so I don't feel too bad jumping in. Seeing all the ladies on the forum in academia is really refreshing, and from the student's perspective I can tell you we really do notice and appreciate the current, well fitting clothes. I have heard the profs in my department discuss the students-in-pyjamas problem in the past and I honestly wanted to tell them that the whole "showing respect through the way you dress" thing goes both ways. So way to go ladies!

On the lighter side, I thought I would share a few of my worst and best dressed prof stories:

Best dressed goes to a photography teacher of mine. Despite being 6' or over she still managed to always come to class looking great. Very american classic-- black cigarette pants, white button downs, cascading cardis, ballet flats-- mixed in with bold accessories and trendy items (like shutter ruffle t-shirts).

Second best sadly goes to a 60+ Native American prof that wore mostly crisp western wear.

All time worst probably goes to the prof that came to class with her hair wet everyday, wearing a sheer white blouse with a bright green jog bra underneath. Maybe it was the fact that she routinely answered phone calls from her high school aged child in class that made me feel that she didn't care about class.

The second was probably the prof that wore the same pair of dirty levis to class everyday all semester (they had an identifiable stain and he wore them at least 3 days a week). He wore the same two lime green and orange polo shirts too.

The third was probably the one with the ripped jeans that you could see his underwear though.

I also had the prof that wore polyester wrangler dress pants with matching boots and skinny ties and shirts from the 70s.

Then there was the one prof that always came to class covered in what appeared to be mud and motor oil-- this was particularly odd because he was an education prof.

I loved the pill comment!

LOL, Michelle. I giggled all the way through, too.

Jonesy, we're certainly in the chili pepper icon grouping- or better yet- how about a new category, since it's not really "hot" that I'm after... Maybe a glass of red wine? (Sophisticated, stylish, deep, complex, layered, strong, bold, interesting...)
Note: This would be an icon I'd be proud to obtain, not one I think I have. Yet.

I'm not a prof, and I cackled all through the article and the subsequent comments (both the witty and overly-earnest). Thanks for sharing, Mae!
And if we tallied up the chili peppers you YLF profs would surely amass, we'd have one spicy meatball!

I thought it was pretty funny, but I was also slightly annoyed by it because the general tone (at least it seems to me) is that it's sort of pathetic for profs to even try to be stylish, especially if, God forbid, you're over 40 years old. Sort of like "Don't even bother making an attempt because you will be mocked by colleagues and students alike." But maybe that's just my reading of it :).

That was funny, but it is almost sad that it must have been written by an academic because they have clearly given way too much thought to it And here I always thought my compatriots in the humanities were comparatively well-turned out.
