Well I'll go ahead and be the IT outlier who likes epaulettes, but I don't generally focus on minimizing my shoulders usually just going for balance overall; if anything, in "soft shoulder" styles I often feel a little weird because I feel like I don't look like myself! I do opt for smaller epaulettes though, mainly due to being short and having a small frame.

They say, " look at my shoulders". If this is an area that one would rather not highlight for whatever reason, shoulder ornamentation may not be the best style.

Thank you all for your thoughts on this topic. I am thinking that I should pass on the jacket I'd been looking at. I think you all saved me from a shopping error!

I don't do epaulettes because they make my shoulders look even bigger/broader

I'm an inverted triangle. Because of my broad shoulders and narrower hips I avoid epaulets and any other shoulder embellishments. It throws off my proportions.

Boy, I really think it probably depends on the EXACT jacket and the EXACT person.

I always think of Linda Evans on Dynasty. A big girl with big shoulders, but they went with it and everything she wore had linebacker shoulder pads and it worked!

I kind of like them because they help lend structure to a look, and help even out my uneven shoulders and balance out my wide hips.

I'd say that in general they tend to look better on those who don't mind emphasizing their shoulder line, which would include those with narrow or sloping shoulders. A long neck, short hair (or hair tied back or up) and a smaller bust would also make them easier to wear. Fabric thickness is also relevant -- some are less pronounced than others.

I have square shoulders but a relatively small frame, a long (ish) neck, short hair, small bust, and I can wear them well.

To some extent it depends on the thickness and fabric of the jacket or coat. Normally they do not look good on me with my big shoulders and short neck, but I have a utility jacket in a flimsy type fabric the I think works fine.

I have average, slopes shoulders. I find the slope makes them look smaller than they are. Epaulettes seem to square my shoulders a little bit: they work really well on me.

I would mostly avoid to not further emphasize my broad shoulders, but I’d be open to something more subtle.

I am no expert but I think they look good on people with smaller shoulder lines, they fit me nicely and I think that is the reason they do.

My title "Epaulettes" refer to the strips of finished fabric that run from shoulder seam toward the neck on a jacket and typically finish wth a button.
I think I'm using the right term but please let me know if not.

Is there a specific body type that should/shouldn't wear jackets featuring these? Are they better if you are broad shouldered? Or busty? Or if you have a short neck? What about a thicker neck? Or am I wsy over-thinking this?
