What I really and truly hate is when a sale is not a sale. I had my eye on a petite poncho at Macy's, which was marked down to $29.99. I didn't buy it because I've decided to put myself on a spending halt until sometime next year (Spring or Summer; maybe later). Anyhoo, I got an email from Macy's about a petite sale, so I decided to check it out. The very same sweater that was $29.99 is now priced at $41, and the sale is 20% off that price. Okay, so what part of this is supposed to make me want to buy it? A true sale would be 20% off the $29.99 price, no?

I find it annoying, because I know there will be x% off in a few days, but I don't always have the luxury of waiting those few days. I am in the US on business on occasion, and I usually have 4 days (M-Th) to get my shopping done. I have seen countless times when I get back home (outside of the US) and notice what I bought is now on sale. Nothing I can do about it so I just have to accept the price I pay for the item and go on with my life.

The most frustrating example of this was at Rack. I bought a leather jacket one week in City A, flew home for the weekend, then was in City B the next week. I missed the Clear The Racks sale and corresponding 30% off by one day. I asked nicely and they would not honor it for me, sale ended Sun and I was there on Mon. End of story. So frustrating!

There are some places I no longer shop at due to poor quality, and it matters not to me how low they drop the prices. Some places, like J.C. Penney, simply don't have anything I or my daughters like, so that's out. My options for affordable petite clothing seems to be dwindling.

Yes, Laurinda, indeed. Customers say that they don't like sales and customers but we spent a year disproving that theory at JCP. Sad because it really was a better way to go all around.
Bottom line for retail is that shoppers want sales, promos and a deal. Look at Nordstrom Anniversary Sale - it works.

This is an interesting strategy that can backfire with some people. I used to shop at Talbots all the time because they had a store across the street from work and their clothes coordinated well with my work wardrobe. I found though that if I bought something, that same piece would be reduced even further in price days later. Talbots always gave me the added discount, but it exhausted me trying to keep up with their sales. I came to loath the idea of shopping at Talbots because I know that one week later whatever I bought would be cheaper. Finally I gave up and avoid the store all together.

Meanwhile, about other stores. I don't think price inflation, I think cheap, poor quality clothes that are discounted because no one is buying. Once I get thae idea that the clothes are poor quality, I can't get it out of the head and avoid those merchants as well. This happened at Ann Taylor. Now another store I avoid.

I still shop at Gap and Banana Republic because I do find things I like and I buy on sale. I don't know anything about J Crew so I can't add anything.

I've always been a sale shopper and am unfazed by most Gap/BR/ON sales as there are 30/40% off almost all the time. Hence I have never purchased a "full price" item from them. Likewise the major retailiers like Macy's and Lord & Taylor. Nordstrom is a completely different model. That said I do believe they inflate to account for this, but my mental math makes me unable to buy unless there is a discount of some sort, free shipping and ebates. I preferred the old Nordstrom Rack method of % off stickers on price tags. There are sites that offer various discounts at a less consistent rate and I feel like I really get a deal there (Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein). Of course shopping is s a bit of a hobby for me and the hunt for the deal is part of the fun. If I were not interested in spending a lot of time (which I realize degrades my actual savings) I would just order/buy when it's something I want and can afford and be done.

The other annoying thing about the AT deals is that the % off deals are " promotions", not sales. So it's not considered a markdown and they won't make a price adjustment even the next day. They'll only do that if the actual item is marked down online or in store, and usually those are small markdowns and they'll run a % off that. Crazy!

Yes. I've stepped away from Loft, Banana Republic, etc over some quality & longevity issues but I still shop Crew & Madewell online and they seem to be doing constant on again off again sale teasers. Tedious! I do try to time my purchases with a sale.

I find it annoying and am sure the prices are inflated. I'll play the game because I have to. I never pay full price for anything except shoes (I have very fussy feet that demand comfort), and I know how to wait for prices to drop. I already have it in my head how much something's worth to me, and I'm only willing to pay so much. I try my best not to succumb to buying something just because it's on sale. It has to be something that's already on my shopping list and something I'd be willing to pay full price for. There's no economy in buying something just because it's cheap.

Yeah...it's bizarre. Speaking for myself, I think it persuades me to shop online more often and maybe ultimately to buy more. I do what N-Marie does and just put things in my basket until a big enough sale comes along. I only buy at full price if I absolutely HAVE to have the item, and how often does that happen?

Yes, AT is crazy like that. And they send online promos before stuff hits the store. Or they'll do only tops , or pants, and have the $175 minimum for shipping. You can get 50% off so often it's hard to want to pay full price. I d been trying to focus on mostly items like pants and skirts that fit me in that brand and not others, but I'll also get sucked in by color palette. It's possible to find things in different years that coordinate well.

It does seem like more and more stores are having sales more often. Places like Kohl's (or is it Kohls'?) have done it for years, but the frequent sales at places like AT, Boden, J Crew, etc., are recent developments.

I am less likely to buy things at full price at places like AT and BR - at somewhere like ON I don't care as much because the savings isn't as large, but at AT, BR, J Crew, etc., they can be sizeable. BR's also started doing this nonsense where half their inventory is called 'BR Picks' and exempt from the majority of the sales.

I've noticed that more and more stores that used to rarely offer sales across-the-board are doing it this season, and often. I long ago accepted Old Navy, Gap, Banana, Loft doing this (don't like the price? Wait til next weekend!). But this season it is also J Crew, Piperlime, Ann Taylor. Does anyone know why this is? It makes me unwilling to pay full price at any of these stores because I suspect the full prices are inflated. Is anyone else annoyed or confused by this?
