I am on the other side of the board. I do not care to store something I already feel looks like it has too much wear. Inevitibly, when I pull it out the next season it does not look fresh. I default to the donate pile.

Oh yes, I do turn worn out things into loungewear, rags etc. My mom makes potholders for us out of old cloth, and she has also been creatively repairing dish towels using thin strips of fabric cut out of old dresses and shirts to trim the edges.

My problem is deciding when to pack things away and when to put them out "to pasture" (turn into rags etc.).

If they are really worn out (blue jeans turns white) then I just wear them at home like lounge wear or cut them out to make shorts for the next summer, so I pack them for the next season. If they are out of alterations or maintenence or wearing at home again, then I make those soft cotton tees as my dusting cloth, pan holders etc.
So maybe I store items like you mentioned till I find a suitable day to go through them and alter them or make them wearable again.

I hang onto things and review them when their season comes around again. I'm likely to be more rational when that happens.

I guess the good thing about a year round moderate climate like in SF Bay is that we don't really have to pack up clothes each season.
I do have an easier time donating not as worn items. I have a hard time with worn out shoes and undergarments - they really need to go in trash as no one else needs to be wearing them but I feel some guilt too.
My sympathy!

I'd say if it has a few wears left in it, and I still like it, I'd definitely hang on to it as long as I had the space!

That's a hard one. There have been times when I've donated something at the end of the season partly because I was sick of looking at it, but then when the calendar came back around wished I hadn't. And I wonder sometimes whether things go faster at the thrift stores when they're in season and whether I should hold mine and donate later because of that.

Usually if something is really close to being truly worn out, I will try to wear it as much as possible before the season ends, and then trash it. (I also read a cool tip once about traveling and almost-bad garments - take something that's on its last legs with you on a trip, and then you can just throw it away while you're there once you have worn it, and you have more space in your luggage for other things.)

I also have a (supposed) hard ceiling on storing out-of-season clothes. I have 4 Rubbermaid bins and everything should fit in there, and if it doesn't, I need to pull some stuff out for donation. This ends up coming up more for winter clothes though because summer clothes take up so much less space per item.

no rule here. I did pack away things that I am pretty sure will end up donated next spring...but I want to have something when the season comes and rather have the chance to change my mind before I decide. I have used almost all of what was packed, but just feel bored with them and am glad to be putting them away now.

The summer season is going to be over for us soon (making me sad...) and I am wondering about what to do with well-loved (read: worn out, faded etc.) clothing. My normal end-of-season behavior was to shove everything that is not going to be worn in the fall in storage bags/boxes and forget about it until spring. But now I am wondering whether it might be good to discard certain items now to make life easier in the spring.

Thing is, I am never sure when to throw things out if I still like the style and they are not falling apart. For example, I have a cotton-blend skirt that looks somewhat faded after a few washes. I bought it this spring, wore it this summer, and the CPW is down to about $3. I could wear it again next year but I know that the dark navy color looks just a bit faded now. So, what do I do?

Do you have a hard-and-fast rule for things like this (i.e., if it's the end of season, and the item has only a few "wears" left in it, throw it out)? Or are you like me and hold on to things for a long time?

I find it easier to donate ill-fitting items, even if they look brand-new, than to discard a slightly worn-out piece. Part of it is that I don't know whether anyone around me will actually notice that the colors are not as fresh or there is a bit of pilling on knits.
