Carly, I had to size up in the blue Micks, but not in anything else ... and they say the blue runs a bit small. I'd go for your usual.

I'm seriously considering the mick pant in coal and tan... Interesting to hear that you felt you needed to size up, since I am juuuust at a 0, but might be more comfortable in a 2?

I got the mixed material parka jacket and I like the fit. I tried the graffiti coat last spring and it was way too big ... Kind of as you describe the camel coat.

Thanks for the pics, CF! I really like the Frenchie pants and would love to see those on you in the size down, but I know you've decided against them.
I'm a little nervous that the TrueFit recommended an XS in the silkwool top for me. That's what I went with - hope it will work.

So sorry I missed this review earlier, CinnamonFern. Looks like I missed out on the chance to see your pictures. But I really appreciate the detailed reviews. I've always been so nervous about ordering her pants, which look so so slim!

I ordered the fawn tailored coat and have already returned it -- did not even take a picture. It was quite nice as a coat but not for me. Even the 4 was a bit big in the shoulder and not in a good oversized way, but the real problem for me is that it was too classic a cut and too bland a color. I immediately looked at least 10 years older and incredibly boring. Terrible.

I am waiting for the studded belt and the blue print silk wool top.

Ummlila, I completely agree about the website ensemble vs real-life item thing. Each piece does have to stand on its own. And the fact is, on the website, the ensemble has to work only in a static photograph! That gives the brand a lot of latitude to put pieces together in an artful way that would never work in real life. We need each piece to work on its own, to move, and to last through the day. That's a much bigger challenge. :)

LOL at Claire ... I am trying to remember if I ever thought that was how jeans are supposed to fit. Although, come to think of it, I still see a lot of sausage-casing jeans on my students.

Thanks U! The pants look great on you. Although we are the same height your legs are obviously several inches longer than mine ;)

I think you were right to return the dress. Now that I've seen the fabric in person, that dress is just a weird idea. Why would you want a tank dress made out of such heavy material? It's hard to layer over and would be too hot in summer.

Okay, I took the pictures, but then dog thought the reason I got up was to take him for a walk, so we did that

Here are the dress and pencil pants, both in size 4. Sometimes with a sweater as the EF website recommends, though the boat neck I tried does not work ... It would require a top that covered the dress (which was very bulky underneath.) I tried to stand in the most straight on way so you can see it. Also, since my bathroom cabinets are dark I put a towel behind myself in some of them.

I think the overall lesson of these purchases and returns to be is that it is very easy to look at a presentation on a website or in a catalog and think that it looks like a fabulous little ensemble or capsule, but the reality is that each piece has to stand on its own, fit your shape and work for you. So it's often better to go back to the scut work of searching out your own pieces to go together.

Hi there CF! Although I love the look of the first, slouchy pants, I agree with your final assessment. The wrinkling would make them a deal-breaker for me, as would the "lint catching abilities" of the second pair. Sizing up on the jeans sounds like a great idea. Of course this pair fits you, so don't feel bad, you're just sizing up for slouchy. Your trim little bod looks as fit as ever. A perfect T with a just-right neckline doesn't come around too often. If it fits right in with the rest of your wardrobe, I say keep it. Thanks for the review!

Nothing much to contribute here - but interested because I've been slightly obsessed with Emerson Fry for a few years. Never have ordered though . Their website and blog is so beautifully photographed and the pieces look so appealing.

CF - I have to say though that the pants all look like a good fit on you, except I think I can see how the jeans are snug. You and I look like body twins, so I'm keeping an eye on you!

Twill is an obnoxious fabric, I agree. And pants that pick up lint are a deal breaker for me too. Too many other things to worry about:)

The dress is the same heavy fabric as the pants and a somewhat hourglassy shape. I have a hard time with dresses fitting me. It is a little tight on the hip and big in parts of torso and bust. It's a pullover style with no zipper, which is a bit annoying. Also it's nearly down to my knees. I haven't packed it up to return yet -- If I haul myself out of the lawn chair, I can take a picture so you can see how it plays on someone who is 5'4"

I'm also waiting for the studded belt! That's what convinced me to order.

I was also tempted by the dress, and ruled it out because I thought it would be too short. Now I'm tempted again ... U, tell me about the fit. (Although what time of year would one wear such a dress?)

I did an Emerson Fry order too. And then another one after my return plans. I don't have the Frenchie pants yet, but ordered them. I really like how they look on you. I've been trying to like larger, drapy silhouettes and so far, don't like anything. I was hoping the Frenchies would do the trick but I'll have too see the quality of the fabric because I will also be intolerant of wrinkling and bagging out. I also ordered the pencil pants, and the main reason I am thinking of keeping them is that the weight would be really good for winter in NH. I also like the front and back vertical seaming, and fortunately the length works for me.

I tried the dress the site recommended with the pencil pants and it did not fit my shape, was too long, and was too heavy over the pants.

I have the hemp v neck from earlier this year, and I love the drapy fit so much I decided to go for the long sleeve as well.

And I'm waiting for the studded belt.

I also have black and white Mick jeans from earlier this year. I've worn the white ones at least once a week since May. Sometimes rolled.

I really like the slouchy fit of the twill pants but hear you on the wrinkles. I think that might be a deal breaker for me. The cigarette pants look like a beautiful fit but if they are tight in the thigh, I'd pass unless they are going to be worn as leggings. Sounds like sizing up isn't an option especially because of the length. The last pair of jeans look like regular skinnies. I think sizing up might be a good idea for a more fluid fit. Just my 2 cents.

ETA: Love the hemp tee. Beautiful!

There was a lot of Emerson Fry enthusiasm last week, so I thought I'd show some pictures of what arrived. Everything is nicely made and nicely packaged, on 'Emerson Fry' wooden hangers.

#1-2 - Frenchie pant, hemp tee
#3 - double-faced pencil pant, hemp tee
#4 - mick jeans, hemp tee

Fabric:

The Frenchie pant is a thin twill. I don't know how badly they would stretch at the knees, but it's the kind of fabric that often does. It also wrinkles like crazy. They would be a three-season pant here in Virginia, but probably not warm enough for somewhere with a serious winter.

The pencil pant is a really thick, structured, fabric - think winter in Montreal. It's a fantastic fabric but it collects lint like crazy.

The jeans are a fairly heavy 99% cotton. I got them in blue although they look almost black in these pictures. They are definitely darker in real life than on the website.

The hemp tee is slightly transparent but feels great - it looks like linen but has a much softer/silkier feel.

Fit

The Frenchie pant. These are 29 - which is what truefit recommended when I ordered them. Now truefit recommends 28, which I think would have been better, and still a slouchy fit on me.

The pencil pant: I ordered my standard 4. They are too tight in the thigh and gape a bit in the waist. (This is true of most skinny pants on me, these fit better than most.) Because of the zips at the ankle, they could not be shortened.

The jeans: I ordered 4 and they are a bit tight everywhere - 6 would probably fit very well. Again, they could not be shortened - I'm not sure about the length.

The tee: I ordered small, which is the right size. The vee is carefully calibrated to be low but not indecent.

I'm tempted to keep the tee, exchange the jeans for a size up (ouch), and return the other two. Advice welcome!

ETA some other photos of the jeans. The last two are designed not to show y'all my belly but you so you can see the unusual belt loops.
