Shiny, I am so glad it was nothing serious. But please please please keep on top of this and take it easy. My MIL died from a DVT which they did not identify in time.

I think it is perfectly normal to be concerned about your clothing in the ER. It's not like you're expecting to die. It's one thing to try to stop someone from helping you in a life threatening situation but it's quite another to be practical if you have the opportunity. I think it was very nice of the nurse to say something.

I also think it is awesome that you so looked fab in the ER.

Wow, I'm glad you're okay, Shiny! I admit I wore a Nike knit/fleece pant/jacket outfit on my trip to the ER this year and for surgery two years ago. My mom bought that for me several years ago and there was something comforting about wearing something she got me when I was at the hospital since she is so many, many miles away.
And I admit I too worry about my clothes in such a setting.

Shiny, I'm so glad it wasn't a blood clot or worse. I hope your doctor/s can figure out what's going on. And it's good to hear your GP has a plan in mind about fibromyalgia.

Last time I had stitches at the ER (I dropped a big kitchen knife on my foot) I was just due for a pedicure and let's say I was also a bit hairy. Yikes ;-)

Oh, Shiny, I'm glad everything came back clear, though obviously you still have to deal with the pain. Have you tried massage therapy? It has really done wonders for muscle tension in my back when it flares up.

I had to chuckle about your worry of having your jeans cut off. My DH is an EMT, and he likes to tell a story of the time they had a female patient who kept hollering, "Don't cut my thong! Don't cut my thong!" DH kept looking at her feet thinking, "She doesn't have thongs on!"

Maya.... chuckling.... I will refrain on the shaving issue, but let's just say I was glad it was a woman who was the ultrasound technician!

Meanwhile, I forgot to mention - at a certain point my foot had swollen (and I had no circulation in it, so turned purple) ... so I had to take off my SW flat on that foot. I kept joking "gee I picked the wrong week not to get a pedicure" because my toes are really atrocious looking right now.

When I feel like crap, I also dress in comfy clothes. But I was dressed up because I had thought light mall walking would work it all out - not make it worse. I do think that in the ER triage they take into account your appearance. So I had them puzzled. Clearly I was in a lot of pain, yet I was dressed for mall shopping. But because of my risk factors for DVT and strokes, they looked past that and got me in a room fast. Waiting for tests and the doctor took a good 5 hours, but at least I was in a room being monitored, not wasting away in the waiting area. That part was the worst, because I couldn't get comfortable sitting up - even with the wheelchair things to keep my leg elevated.

It's a long-standing joke with my DH that if I die suddenly he's to:

1) Tell my kids, family, friends and loved ones not to mourn to much, because I died with zero regrets and had lived a full and happy life, blessed with great relationships and feeling lucky with everyone in my life;

and

2) Have it written on my gravestone "I told you something was wrong with me."

Hee hee.

Yeah, I was going to mention the underwear... giggle... luckily I was wearing a nice pair! Those hospital gowns don't close in the back. DH kept trying to figure out a way to get it to close, but I flashed my striped panties at several nurses and doctors. ;-)

I think I may go do some online shopping now. The pain killer is not making me sleepy at all ... but I could be loopy and not realize it. Hmm. Oh well, if I buy something stupid in my loopiness, I can always return it later. ;-)

Meanwhile it appears DD is going off on a parental-supervised outing with BFF-who's-not-yet-a-BF. Had a nice chat with his mom, explained that there are teen hormones flying and I just want to confirm with her that parents will be supervising at all times, because DD (even if she is attracted to BFF) would prefer and be more comfortable with parental supervision at this point in time. His mom was very understanding and said yeah, she noticed the sparks flying too... and that BFF keeps claiming they are just friends... but she *also* thinks it's only a matter of time between them.... so she's on the lookout too.

Shiny, I'm so glad there was nothing serious, and that your jeans didn't get cut Actually, I have thought about this before, and the funny part? I have never been to the ER before. But one day I was watching one of those silly medical dramas and they had to cut this woman's shirt off and I started thinking about it.

It also made me think about shaving. See, I get really lazy about shaving in the winter. I'd be so embarrassed for anyone to see just how hairy I am capable of getting. In fact while reading your story I immediately thought "gosh I hope she shaved." But I guess most normal women do it without putting up a fuss, but I just hate shaving. I get so irritated, no matter what razor or shaving cream I use.

I usually don't wear things I'm very attached to if I'm feeling under the weather, but it's more of a comfort issue. Not that my "nice" clothes are uncomfortable, but when I'm feeling crappy I just want to be in my pajamas. Barring that possibility, I'll take the next step up, which is a cozy sweater and some loose fitting jeans.

Now I just had a positively morbid thought: If I were to die, would I really want to go in a boring sweater and jeans? Hmm...

Shiny -- I'm so glad that it wasn't something serious, although muscle injuries are such a hassle to heal. Your story made me think of the old adage to always wear nice underwear in case something happens to you and you end up in the emergency room. I think this makes you the YLF poster woman -- you even look fabulously stylish when you end up in the emergency room!

I'm so glad to hear you are ok now, but please do take enough rest, that closet rotation can wait another day. Good to hear too that everybody was so nice and understanding (laughing about you worrying about your jeans - and you definitely are one stylish lady when even the ER people notice your outfit:-).

I hope they will be able to figure out soon what exactly the problem is. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be feeling much better on Tuesday, and I'm convinced that lady will be extra impressed when she sees what trouble you are going through just to meet with her. Bonus points for Shiny!!!

OMG, Shiny. That's frightening! I'm glad you are at home resting. Glad that emergency room nurse had an eye for nice jeans. That part was pretty darn funny!

I can't really think of any article of clothing that I worry about getting ruined. I used to worry about wearing white for fear of spilling and staining in general but I'm somewhat over that now. However, I have to say that your new cream coat purchases would put me over the edge. I can't imagine trying to keep those clean.

Thanks Ana and Alecia. I just took the pain killer so either I'll fall asleep, or be loopy-posting in a bit.

Ana - I hope you've had the shoulder checked out. probably a pinched nerve, but I can't remember which is heart attack - right or left shoulder. I had that experience a few years back, along with other weird symptoms, had to go in and have a cardio exam (not ER trip that time, since it was during the week) - heart is just fine. But good to know it's not that! In my case, it's either the fibro, or the esophagous (trashed by years of constant ibuprofen to treat muscle aches and pains)... esophagous can cause similar symptoms as heart attack (radiating shoulder, back and/or chest pain, and even tingly numbness in your arm), since they share the same nerve.

I'm becoming a doctor, with all I've learned! LOL!

DH is on teen-hormone supervision duty today, since I'm stuck in bed... DD's friend-who's-not-a-BF is coming over later. He broke up with his GF, and has been hounding her to date him. DD wants to keep him at arm's length for now, so she wants us to make our presence known all day so he doesn't make any moves on her.

Shiny! I'm SO happy you're okay. When I started reading that you had pain in your leg, my first thought was, "Oh no, I hope it's not a clot!" Probably because clots scare me to death. It's no fun that it's a muscle thing either though, they hurt! I have bad shoulder pain in my right shoulder. It'll be totally fine and I won't feel any pain for weeks or months, and then I'll just wake up one day and my arm will be numb or tingley, and my shoulder will hurt, and that will carry on for a few weeks, and then it will just mysteriously go away. Anyway, I'm sure that was very interesting to you all. :D

I laughed so hard at you being worried about your jeans getting cut off. It's so funny the stuff we think about in really serious situations, isn't it? I haven't ever thought about that particularly, but I still haven't taken my chef blouse to the cleaners because I'm scared that it will get lost or ruined, hee hee. I should just take it already. :D

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Shiny - I am so glad to hear you are ok. It took me a little bit to click on the link because it scared me. But then I figured if it was something really serious, you wouldn't have posted. In any case, I hope you feel better. Can't say that I've ever worried about getting clothes cut off. Please take care!

I guess I can share this with you all. Now that it's all behind me - I can laugh a little about it.

I woke up yesterday morning with weird pain in the back of my left leg, right behind the knee. Hard to explain - it seemed like a muscle strain but made no sense at all, because I had not done any exercise or anything that would've strained it the day before (or heck that entire week). It was painful enough, I couldn't place my weight on that leg.

I was posting to YLF yesterday morning while trying ice (which made it worse) then heat (which did nothing) then DH using yoga massage balls (helped a little) and gentle yoga stretching. Finally DH said, "you know what, why don't you go to the mall like you'd planned - and the walking around will be good for you. You've been housebound all week because of work and battling that cold, and you need the exercise."

So... I got dressed and out I went....

Unfortunately, as the day's shopping trip wore on (just two hours - but I *did* get some great stuff and bargains to boot), the leg worsened, until I was limping so bad, and wincing with every step, that strangers and store clerks were stopping me asking me if I was okay. Bloomie's store clerk even insisted on taking me down the freight elevator, to save steps, and helped me to my car (they give such excellent service there - I am a devoted fan for life now!).

I called my doctor, he told me to go to the ER asap. Because I have a history of mini-strokes, and strokes run in the family. He wanted to rule out DVT/blood clot.

Sooooo.... I wound up limping into the ER by myself, while my DH took the car to pick the girls up. I was in tears at this point, scared I was going to stroke out, and in terrible pain. They put me in a wheelchair (first time for that one!) and the wait wasn't too terribly long in the waiting room.

The funny, fashion-related part: I kept getting asked by the triage people, "why are you dressed so nice, if you are in such pain" and I'd have to explain over and over "because I thought I could walk it out in the mall!"

And then when I got into an ER room, the nurse took one look at my skinnies and said, "I'm going to guess that if you pass out, you don't want us cutting those off of you .... so perhaps you should take them off now and put on this gown instead?"

Believe it or not, despite my fear going to the ER, this thought had, indeed, crossed my mind!! What if I collapsed on the way and they had to cut off my favorite new jeans??? ACCKKK!

Anyway, making a long story short, many hours and x-ray and ultrasound tests later - it wasn't a DVT - they couldn't find anything wrong. Well... obviously something is wrong. They just don't know what. They said it is a muscle issue, which they agreed was quite weird, considering I had done absolutely nothing to cause any strain. I said to the guy, "And you docs know nothing about how to treat muscle issues, right" and he admitted, "yeah."

So I was sent home with pain killers and Motrin and RICE instructions (been there done that - this is nothing new for me - just different muscles this time) and a referral to a PT. Been the PT route before and it hasn't helped. However, my GP knows what to do next - we have ruled out everything except fibromyalgia. So he already has a plan in mind, when the fibro reared its ugly head again, on how to manage that.

Soooo.... I am stuck in bed with leg elevated, laptop on my lap, and I'm afraid you're all stuck with me posting a lot today out of boredom!! As soon as DH gets back with the Rx's I may even get a little loopy. Or I may feel better enough to be able to stand long enough to at least finish the closet rotation - and maybe take a few more photos so you can help me decide what to wear to that interview on Tuesday.

I'm going to that interview no matter what... hopefully by then, I'll feel better. But even if not, I will wear heels and I will hobble through the one or two hours.

Anyone else ever worry about favorite clothing getting cut off and ruined if there was ever any ER emergency? I know one shouldn't worry about that, if your life is at stake, but I get attached and affectionate towards certain clothes!

Guess this is a sign that I must track down another pair of Earnest Sewn size 24 dark was skinnies.... somewhere.... so I can duplicate.
