LOL, April. As you know, I get to see both ends of the academic spectrum- with work at one end and PTA at the other. I am unfortunately all too familiar with the elastic-pants-plus-holiday sweater (jumper, per Angie's post today?) look. Even worse may be the applique sweatshirt plus elastic jeans that are too short.

Thanks for all the comments here- even if they don't "get it" at work, at least I have you all to steer me in the right direction. :)

Here's to transforming the academic look! Next week I'll get to trot it out for my students...

So sorry I didn't comment last night, Mae! I actually thought I had, but instead I had written a response and then fallen asleep while still logged in but without submitting it.

I love this outfit! Brava to you for "embracing the fear." :)

Sadly, as you have pointed out, academics tend to be impervious to style. One of the few places less stylish than higher education is lower education, where I work, and where elastic-waist cotton-knit pants and sweaters with holiday appliques are the norm. (Yes, I am talking about the adults and not the children.)

But with you and Medusa transforming yourselves, and with help from the ladies at academichic.com, perhaps that is changing. I think that even if no one commented on your outfit yesterday, they noticed.

Keep up the good work!

FANTASTIC- well done for taking the plunge, in a few weeks you'll wonder how you ever lived without them and black shoes will be a thing of the past. I now only have one pair of black shoes and they're patent x

Very pretty! Congratulations on standing up to the challenge :)

As for your question - once you start trying new things you'll get used to them quickly, and for example, these red shoes will seem so natural you won't think twice about them. However, I do think that personality plays a part - some people move very fast! I also very rarely have anyone around me comment, which is a little discouraging - I guess that's my main reason for posting pictures.

You look perfectly adorable in that outfit and I am proud of you for embracing the fear. I just love this thread. I love this outfit much more with the added belt shoes and necklace. I think no one at work said anything because you look perfectly comfortable in this.
I will be embracing my fear when the weather cools a bit and I start wearing my new fall wardrobe.

Thanks for the boost, ladies!

R&J: I'm not sure I conquered the fear. It just sort of tagged along for the ride all day. ;)
Medusa: Reveling in stylishness? Hmm. I sort of vascilated all day between complete uncertainty and absolute triumph. I'm not so great at style confidence with these new looks. Pre-YLF I would have worn the top and pants without the belt or necklace and with black shoes. So, this look is definitely outside of my comfort zone... but it feels good to push myself and try new things...

What about everyone else? How long did it take you to embrace something different--and outside of your "comfort zone"--and have the confidence to pull it off? Is it just a matter of getting used to trying new looks, or is it more a function of personality?

NO ONE commented at work today. I'm trying not to read into that too much. It's not like I work with a fashion conscious crowd. I believe academics are notorious for being quite the opposite.
