Another vote for Old Navy. I get the XL so it's long enough (and I'm busty and don't want the skin tight look).
If I have to default to mens, I get small.

Another quick thought - Dukuth Trading. Their quality is great, although the tees may skew a bit more casual than you have in mind.

Laura, I haven't ever even heard of Everlane or Grana. But I will do some checking online.

CocoLion, I just cleared out a lot of Lands End tees. I kept a couple for gardening, but they're just too boxy for me. I love the rib material, though. I have switched to their "shaped" fit tees which are thinner, because I wear them under a cardigan or jacket fall into winter.

I'm going to head over to Eddie Bauer today and see what I can come up with.

Thanks, all! That certainly gives me something to start with!

I am recommending three tees here. Two I own, one I do not but is similar to one I own.

First, I have this Lands End striped tee (I sized up to achieve the pictured fit). I know it's not gray, but the black and white stripes (black + white = gray right?) might function in the same way within an outfit. Anyway it's the best tee I've purchased in a while. The second find is the same tee in solid colors, maybe there's a color that would work for you. I checked and they don't have it in gray this year. Anyway, highly recommended.

My third Find is a Madewell tee. It's not as thick as the Lands End. But, I like it, I have it in two colors. And it's available in gray. Maybe size down one size.

Such a bummer about losing the 'perfect' tee! :(

Have you tried Old Navy? If I size up, their Fitted Tee works for me as you describe (I'm small busted with a narrow rib cage). If the Fitted Tee doesn't work, they also come in relaxed or boyfriend cuts. Can't beat the price!

You might check out Eddie Bauer's style called Favorite Tee.

It's very hard to find substantial tees (sigh). Have you looked at LL Bean or Land's End? I'm not sure they would carry the style you want but their fabrics tend to be good.

Are you looking for a heather grey or a solid grey?

If solid grey, try American Giant. I've bought several T's from them as well as some sweatshirts for others. I have the Essential V Necks and will likely order some Slub Crew & V Necks in a month or two after I do a closet edit.

Substantial fabric, US sourced and US-manufactured (I guess mostly of interest if you are located in the US)
http://www.american-giant.com/womens-tshirts/

Several years ago I had the perfect grey tee, and I got rid of it when I gained weight. I got it at Levi's, and it was cotton, crew neck, the perfect length sleeves (not too long, longer than a cap sleeve but just barely), and I think the material would be considered a fine rib. It was fitted but loose enough over my chest that it wasn't obscene. My short list of fall shopping includes a tee just like this, and if I could find it in short AND long-sleeved versions I'd be happy. I've been looking a lot and all I can find are boxy tees, or tees where the material isn't substantial enough to hold its own against my imperfections. Suggestions?
