I agree the layers are a good idea and I would bring your warmest coat, either the wool or the trench with lining. I do like the idea of a packable down jacket or vest and I think you can pick one of those up for a reasonable cost. I purchased one at Joe Fresh last year and it is holding up well. The footwear....it will depend on when you go. There might be snow soon and it might be on the ground.

It really has been a relatively mild fall in most parts of Canada --- but it won't be 19 in Edmonton in a few weeks!

I think you're set for outerwear, though. If necessary you could always pick up a packable down vest while you are there. Your $$ may go farther. And absolutely, hit the Danier!! There will also be other good shopping if you are inclined.

The woman who blogs at Blue Collar Red Lipstick is in Edmonton. She doesn't usually photograph her outerwear, but it might be useful to get an idea of what she's been wearing recently otherwise.

I don't live in Edmonton but have spent a lot of time there. They definitely have Danier! Once you have a timeline and know where you are staying, we can get you sorted on what outerwear would be best and which store is closest:-)
I'm in northern Alberta and so far winter has been mild (in our opinion). However, that can change overnight!

Thanks for chiming in, Suz. Just for kicks last night around 10pm I checked the weather. It was 19C here in Mexico City, 0C in Edmonton. The same thought crossed my mind about Cheryle's comment - I guess she is used to the cold whereas I am definitely not!

Layers sounds good. I just added the EF wool sweater (thin, not bulky) and I have a couple of leather jackets to choose from. I also have the CK trench with wool liner and hood, so that may take me further into winter than I figured. My only other coat option is a wool one, bulkier but probably warmer (but snugger due to recent weight gain, still fits though, I tried it on a week or so ago to check).

Luckily I have one hat, one pair of gloves and one thick winter scarf. I had to replace these items after zealous purging.

That's great news about the cultural stuff. When I know dates I will check to see what's going on. But of course you know if I am in Canada stop #1 will be Danier!!!

Thanks again.

Edmonton is an interesting city. But I think Cheryle is being overly optimistic about the weather -- I know they've had some flurries there already and frost is thoroughly evident in a friend's recent photos. Similar to Toronto, if you wanted you could stay indoors the whole time you are there (assuming you're downtown) -- there are many indoor paths. But I hope you won't have to do that!

Still -- the right layers would probably serve you if the trip is soon. I'd probably bring a leather jacket and/ or blazer, a raincoat that will go over it or a light wool coat, and a scarf, gloves, and hat just in case. I don't think I'd bring my puffer at this time of year, although you'll see others wearing them. For me, I try to avoid the puffer as long as possible!

There is a lively cultural life for a place relatively small.

I haven't shopped in Edmonton for years but the West Edmonton Mall was one of the largest in North america at one time. There is a Danier there too but if you aren't in that area, there are a few others including one downtown.

It has been fairly mild so far this fall so you should be okay. We have similar weather in Winnipeg and it has been warm enough for a leather jacket so far.

I may have a work trip to Edmonton soon.

I know nothing about the area other than it will probably feel like negative three thousand degrees to me.

Is there Danier? :D :D

Are there any fabbers in the area?

As soon as I know I will update the thread.

I own NO puffer, no snow boots, only one winter coat (wool) ... even after this recent shopping haul I **MAY** have identified a gaping hole in my wardrobe - the Polar Vortex Capsule!!!
