Thank you for the comments everyone!

Shiny, I have several pieces that I don't wear, that are a "piece of my grandmother, great-aunt," etc. (Beautifully put!), that I don't really wear, but don't want to get rid of either, but I wasn't sure what to do with them. Also, like Angie, my accessories "taste" goes in phases--I don't wear them for a long time, and then all of a sudden I'm wearing them almost every day, so I hate to get rid of things like that, because I know it does change for me.

I have my necklaces out on hooks in the bathroom, and my earrings in a clear plastic "turnstyle" type box on the counter. And then my rings and bracelets and larger earrings are in a clear plastic organizer. I do have to see everything, or I just forget I have it.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll start organizing my jewelry this week.

Lovely Shiny! Super duper sentiment and tradition. And very creative of you Renee!

Ana, I’d box the fine jewelry that you seldom wear and pass on any pieces that do not hold any meaning for you, or you don’t like. I find that accessories are worn in phases. I can go an entire season without wearing a certain accessory and presto next season it’s my favourite piece.

The jewelry and accessories that are in rotation need to be in sight. I bought really cheap plastic see through boxes that I keep in my sock and stocking drawer. I pop feather and patent brooches, and cocktail rings in there so that I SEE them every day. I’m not actually wearing these accessories at the moment, but I can and I might whenever it tickles my fancy.

I used to collect pins. In the 80s/early 90s my signature look was to have a pin on my suit jacket. I'm no longer into this look, so a few years back, I started a tradition that I would give each of my daughters a pin at xmas dinner, wrapped up in a pretty box with a bow. Each pin has a story, since I would go on a hunt for a new pin every time I traveled, and back then I traveled a lot.

Lately I've moved on to giving them some of my other jewelry I no longer wear, such as lockets and my old charm bracelet from when I was a kid. They don't necessarily wear the jewelry - it's more of a keepsake thing, a piece of their mom.

It helped that grandma started it all off by giving each of them beautiful jewelry boxes for xmas!

If possible, I take them apart and then make new jewelry. I espeically will do this if a beaded necklace breaks. Sometimes I will like the beads of a necklace or bracelet, but I don't like how they're arranged. I'll break the string and restring them. Or sometimes I'll grab a bunch of beaded jewlery and will set them down and notice that the different beads would look much better together in a totally different piece.

;) I preform surgery on my clothes and jewlery on a regular basis.

What do you all think of editing your jewelry? I know clothing and things go out of fashion, but what about jewelry? I have a lot of jewelry I never wear. I don't want to get rid of things that are "fine jewelry" but what do you do when you have stuff you just really don't wear, but don't want to get rid of either?
