Downsizing someone else's space can certainly change your view of your OWN things! Since doing it a couple of times myself, I have vowed to confine my own personal items to limited-sized spaces (e.g., not buying a dresser to store new clothes, once my shoe rack is full I don't add more shoes until some are removed, only one cabinet in the office, etc) and KonMari folding has helped make the most of my smaller spaces!

Counting pieces and days between laundry is helpful when I clean out my kids' clothes, too. DH loves to stock up kids' clothes and his own outerwear, and having numbers in mind keeps him from overbuying any one kind of item. Well, I try to get him to adhere to the numbers... it doesn't always work

There is nothing like having to deal with downsizing or a relative's estate to make one realize the abundance in which we all live. I have gone through it only twice. In both cases, we had to clear out houses for sale. There was a lot of emotion involved and it could only be described as horrendous and scarring. I learned to view possessions very differently in the process.

So interesting that several live with hoarders...Mr. Suz is not that, exactly, but he's a buyer-upper of items "on sale" (e.g. pantry staples and dry goods) so we need a lot of storage space...

We do both hoard books, but that is a different issue.

You've made me vow to fold Kon-Mari style now.

I am still recovering from having helped my mum move from the large house we grew up in to the cottage she now lives in and that was about 8 years ago!!! So I’m feeling for you. And Cardiffgirl SIL!

I am increasingly less tolerant of spare ‘stuff’. But DH is a bit of a hoarder so I have to keep everything in order in ‘my’ bits of our house and accept our differences. It is teaching me patience but it is a long lesson! I’m slow to learn!

We went away for a week and I had a bit of a fail on the packing front so literally was able to pack away my clothes in a cupboard very very neatly with lots of space in between and it was a delight to see (but lots of repeat wears and lots of use of the washing machine) I just took too little.

I do a loose version of the Konmari fold for my jeans and casual shirts and it is a gamechanger. Definitely agree with doing what makes you happy wardrobe and otherwise as much as possible.

Horses for courses!

Fwiw, I'm also a regular editor and a Konmari folder! My "saved outliers" are more like Sal's category 1 than category 3, and I agree that letting go of what's not working is great in clothes as in life!

(Super helpful categories, too, Sal!)

Yes clearing out houses is a way to not want stuff isn't it!!

I went through this 3-4 years ago with my MIL and over the last year with my parents. I now do not assume that my sons will ever want my stuff.

WRT clothing I sort of do the konmari - especially for gym gear and tee shirts.

I think with the rarely worn pieces they gall into three categories

1) Occasionally useful but not needed often (maybe a top in your sports team colours or a ski jacket)
2) Loved but not often worn due to lifestyle or climate (black tie or summer holiday gear)
3) Pieces that I just rarely want to wear or orphans...

I think we need to be careful with the third group in particular....

CJH- sounds like you are on track with your needs and having a closet that really works for you. I can relate to that bottom layer and have removed a few of these pieces too.

Having cleared out the homes of both my mother and my husband's elderly never-married aunt and then moving out of our home of 27 years, I am sufficiently cured of wanting to hang on to much.

I admit to finally trying the KonMari style of folding - I did my pyjamas, jeans, and workout stuff - and was nothing short of blown away. For the first time in my entire life I can actually tell which pair of jeans are which. Mind blowing in its simplicity.

I've been helping my mom and inlaws declutter too, though they're not moving yet-so my sympathies! Soooo muuuuch stuuuufff :(
When I do my weekly laundry, I try to rotate my clothes so the ones I didn't wear in the last week go on top!

Two things have recently prompted editing. I think I’m leaning in the opposite direction as Notsaf as she describes keeping a few things on hand to satisfy that “just want something different today” urge. While that does make a lot of sense to supply yourself with those pieces to fill the need for a change of pace, I find myself moving more towards completely passing those things by and using favorite fall backs pretty much every day and for every occasion.

The things I mentioned inspiring me this way are having just helped my in-laws clear out their house and move to assisted living. They’ve moved from clothing space of 3 large closets, a small coat closet, and 4 large dressers to 2 small closets and 2 small dressers. One closet also “has” to contain such things as folding chairs and a portable sewing machine. So both of them deleted a LOT of clothing, and I helped by counting pieces and days between laundry opportunities. This process continues with the rest of their household goods and is also motivating to me.

The other inspiring thing is that a few months ago, I started folding my underclothes, pajamas, workout and running clothes the Konmari way. It’s true that you can see everything that way! And it shows me that I wasn’t using stuff on the bottom, and have concluded that most of that bottom stuff, I do not need. So if you’re interested in Konmari decluttering but can’t get yourself to do it for some reason, just using the folding method could be a sneaky way to start.
