Az: I've been working on Angie's advice to wear the heck out of my clothes, and I think your plan is fab!

I also think it's fine to rotate items in your closet periodically, particularly if you feel overwhelmed by the choices. That's why I like dressing in large capsule -- it lets me feature certain items for 4-8 weeks, then give them a rest.

You mean you don't dress for the UPS guy delivering the Nordie packages?

I'm so glad I held onto the almost purged skirt that used to hang on me. I've gained about five pounds in the last couple of months. :( So now that skirt is rather snug. Ugh!

Cocolion -- your post has made me confess -- I also put underwear in the dryer! But only the "bad" ones -- the big soft 100% cotton ones that Jockey makes, that prevent any kind of "feminine" trouble, but that create such obvious pantyline issues that you can't wear them under day clothes. (I wear them indoors, under my jammies, on nights when it's unlikely I'll require prettier ones). ;-)

And you know what? They last YEARS. They are as sturdy as good quality, thick cotton tee shirts.

Good post and I am definitely working on trying to do this. I tend to save a lot of things and then end up not wearing them . I also have some items that are slightly uncomfortable so I can only wear those for certain occasions.I have decided that some of those must go to a new home as they are clogging up my wardrobe .

I get you, and your Kelly green v neck top.
You are not alone, a lot of us... Okay some of us... Actually many...we will feel very ridiculous wearing a very nice outfit at home and no one to see. Clothes are an expression of ourselves and expression by default involves audience. Whether of one or many. That's probably why occasion wear are different and more expensive. If it was strictly by the time, your jammies would be most expensive. And that's why now I stick to the logic of putting more money in lounge wear/work wear.
But i guess I'm going on a tangent there so...

Laughing at your comment about the green v neck you are saving. I do the same thing! I also have a category of special tees that I love a lot but no one else will get my love of that top, i.e. I'm almost ashamed to wear it in public.

I even started putting my underwear in the dryer. If it can't go in the washer and dryer it goes to the dry cleaners. Only exception is bras.

Lol, Anne -- to be clear, I don't have a spectacular wardrobe! Not by everybody else's standards, at least. It's mostly casual tops and jeans. I do like everything, though. ;-)

Nishaa, I have a kelly green v-neck that's perfect and yeah, same thing. It's not even that special -- just cotton fabric, nobody else would think it's all that amazing -- but I really like it and I can't replace it, so it has been sitting in my closet getting one or two wears per year -- for like eight years! Silly. :-)

I think the problem with all this is that two or three days a week I'm working from home and no one's going to see me besides the kids and the other mom I carpool with. Even my husband barely sees me dressed -- he rarely gets home before I'm in my jammies. (It's why I wear nice jammies!). So often I'm tempted to wear scrubby tee shirts and stretched-out judo pants because, frankly, that's what I'd wear if I lived alone on a desert island. Unlike practically everybody else, I don't "dress for myself". I mean, I do like clothes, and I do wear what pleases me aesthetically, but only for an audience. Putting on a nice outfit and sitting by myself in the house is a bit like eating delicious steak and spitting it out. What's the point? Clothes are advertising. ;-)

I apologize again for not responding to all the comments -- I typed out individual responses earlier and the computer ate them and I don't have the stamina to do it again. But I relate to a lot of things everybody said!

I enjoy this type of post so much that I forgot to respond!
I have more than I AM wearing in my closet.
The items I keep for 'special occassions' are not expensive or delicate but FUSSY- I would never lounge in a Winter dress because it requires tights and just doesn't 'feel right' for lounging etc.
And lots of layers and most zip-up pants don't feel comfortable enough for TV watching either.
Also although I have too much, it has all been carefully chosen and fits well so culling would be wasteful in my mind.
I feel like a spoilt brat right now!

How nice to have a wardrobe full of items that you like and suit and fit you! Go for it in wearing them!

I'm not really like you, having a much smaller wardrobe. I still find myself having the thought to save things, which while quite legitimate I think, in a "take this off when I get home from work" scenario, is quite silly in a "this is a $10 dress I bought for lounging, but oh, it's quite nice so I better not actually wear it for lounging because I could harm it" scenario. Although I have actually ruined 2 cheap dresses in the last year or so, so there's some logic to that!

I did a closet edit recently, and like you, I still have too many clothes. But you know, I like having the variety, and now that I've gained a little weight, I like having different fits around, too.

Yes, yes, yes.
I'm also trying to give up the save for later mentality and wear those special occasion pieces regularly. And they weren't that special to begin with. I got a perfect red v neck t shirt and refused to use it in daily wear coz I loved the colour too much and well you know the rest.
And yes, I also have cocktail dresses for occasions not more than three times a year. But they are lovely, expensive and Angie said to keep clothes ready for special occasions, so there.
Thanks for saying that out loud, what we definitely need to kick our butts into.

Finding that characteristic in an item that is more you. "

I don't do this so much because I'm not attracted to super glam clothes so most of my stuff is everyday wear.
I have made an effort to make my lounging clothes more attractive so instead of wearing all my nice pants to work and hanging out in gear I have some nice joggers for wearing everyday and ive just hemmed my casual jeans so they are nice for wearing around.
I have a smaller wardrobe after losing weight and having so few clothes that fit. I'm happy with my winter and mid season stuff. Summer will be tackled later.
I put my delicate laundry in a bag or handwash. I have a line but don't use it much. I try to in summer when I have more time as I much prefer it and my mother would be horrified how much I use a dryer!

I do believe in wearing your nice things, and I'm getting much better at that... most of the time.

I can so relate to the "too many clothes" thing. I "did the numbers" last year and determined I could go the whole summer without doing laundry I think. Well, not really, but my work tops would only get worn once or twice. And the problem is, most are all newish and I do like them. And they do still suite me. Purging would purely be for the sake of it, and that seems wasteful too. Sigh. It has helped me drastically reduce purchasing more, in fact this year I think I've only bought three new work summer tops. I do fully intend to get rid of the "meh" ones though... if and when summer finally comes and I have a chance to think about it.

Lisa, I'm the same, more summer things than winter, what's with that? Do we think we can make summer come sooner and last longer if we shop for it in April?? I"m especially bad with sandals, I think I have 3-4x as many sandals as boots. Yeah, that makes sense.

I feel like I still have too many as well - but I think what happens is when the real heat of summer kicks in, I go to that "I don't really care that much" mode and I just keep wearing the same, most comfy light weight things I have unless I am truly going "out" - and that doesn't happen all that much in the heat of July/August and early Sept. So all the other things languish in the closet.

A good plan, clothes are meant to be worn, and that's it. It's truly the only reason why they are in the closet. And you are not alone, I am always trying to cull my wardrobe thinking that I have too much. It's the most common thing I talk about on my blog.

Good plan, Az! I've been thinking about this lately regarding my "perfect white shirt" I spent months and months looking for. Crisp yet soft, equally tailored and relaxed, machine washable and wrinkle-resistant... Perfect! So perfect that I've only worn it twice in 6 months! SILLY! After reading this, I'm going to wear it today and love it for all the reasons I purchased it in the first place.

Angie's beautiful post Friday includes wearing her new lace birthday dress for work and not just special occasions is a great example for us all to wear what makes us happy!

I need to practice this more than I do. I shop sales for nice silk or linen tops that are as inexpensive as cotton with the intention of wearing them for daily life, then end up saving them, but I can't bring myself to put them in the dryer to dry. My hanging lines are only two steps away and ready with wide plastic hangers and clothespins, so hanging is a breeze and most things are dry in less than 24 hours.

Great philosophy. I do like my clothes to look smooth and pressed. Even my knit tops. But I only iron once a month. I only go to the dry cleaners once a month too. This really helps me to wear ALL of my clothes.

The only item I have been guilty of "saving for dressy outings" is my Burberry wool tweed coat...I am GOING to wear it more frequently this fall/winter. With my luck it will get moth holes from hanging neglected in my closet.

I do relate! I have worked so hard to create a carefully curated closet of items I love and wear, and I have succeeded. In my head that closet would be a minimal closet but I recently had to accept that it is not. It is so much minimal than it was when I first arrived at YLF but I still have a lot of clothes. What I have one is stop buying the same thing over and over, what I mean is that while I have quite a few pairs of black pants, they are very different styles and I refrain from buying the same style over and over.. that has definitely helped keep my numbers down I also decided like you that I wont baby my clothes and will wear what I want when I want so as to ensure that I do get (enjoyable) wear out of all my clothing

Excellent thinking, Aziraphale. My approach is slightly different as I have two separate wardrobes for in and out of the house (messy lifestyle!), but I make sure that anything bought for the latter goes anywhere, from grocery shopping to casual dining.

Like you, I have a small capsule for dressier occasions, but, otherwise, I make sure that everything I buy is as versatile as possible.

Good luck with the new plan.

I find this an interesting post - I support your idea of wearing your favourite clothes and not being too precious about them. Life is too short to wear things that make you feel average when you have awesome stuff hanging around.

I do use a dryer during winter....life would be stressful without one. But my preference is to line dry - and I know this is a cultural difference and easy for me with a machine at home and a line outside - for economic, environmental and preference reasons.

I suspect even just by thinking about it favourites will come out to play more - and you may find pieces that you are ready to hand on, because our preferences evolve. I have a small but growing pile now despite being very cautious letting new clothes in - there are items I just never wear, and there is always another item ahead of them in the queue!!

We have some favourite dresses, favourite tops, skirts, pants, boots, etc that we avoid wearing often because we don't want to get them dirty or worn out. Yet we have so many clothes, we can't even wear them all and those nice items that we wear scarcely, end up getting wasted.

I'm glad you posted this as, thanks to you, I am not going to try to not hold back on wearing certain favourite items

The thought of wearing my clothes with the intention of wearing them out is so different and honestly sounds refreshing. I have an entire closet full of fabulous, stylish clothes that I hardly ever wear, not because they fit poorly or look bad, but because I'm afraid of wearing them out. So I just wear workout clothes all the time, ALL the time. This, I realize, is ridiculous. So I think you should go for it- and I'll try to do so right along with you.

I think it was Opra who once said 'use the good china' - well I've been using the good China for 25 years, and I wear my favourite (the good) clothes as well. I think it was in 2013 that I got a white jean jacket, and 2014 the HEWI white Jean that were the gateway drug to my white addiction. I am wearing the above items, as well as white kick crops and white cut off jean shorts so much that they are becoming my signiture.

Just this weekend I did a bleach and hot water wash after I got coffee on my crops, yellow highlighter on the jacket, and garden dirt on the shorts. They all came through the wash fine, and I'm wearing the shorts again today!

FWIW, DS#2 was helping me with the laundry last week, and 2 new linen tunics went through the dryer. I thought linen was notorious for shrinkage, but they came through just fine!

What RandJ said about being less precious and enjoying your clothes just makes sense.
