Chris, I am definitely not lacking in “closet decor”! I don’t want too much of that anymore. Too much makes it hard to appreciate the things I currently want to wear.

you articulated very good reasons for everything you’re passing on so you should probably let them all go. However don’t forget about the possibility of keeping a few things with great memories or things that speak to you as “closet decor” even if you don’t expect to ever wear them again.

Sound reasoning and beautifully organized. I always, always love your style, Janet, and you are absolutely gorgeous... better to let go of the things that aren't serving you now, and focus on all the beautiful things that properly show you off.

So helpful as I am starting to reach the toughest parts of my edit. You made sound decisions here. And I really like your sorting area. As I make more progress in my own editing I’m going to see how I can incorporate this type of system. I wish I had a niece or someone to pass items to though.

I love your methodolgy of taking a pic and writing down a reason why it doesn't work. I would be the type that would go back later and question my rationale, by doing this, you can always refer to why you got rid of it and stand by the decision.

Barbara Diane, the baskets do help for that sort of in-between editing -- when I'm getting dressed and realize something isn't working for me anymore. When one or more starts getting full, it's time to schedule a donation drop-off or pick-up! It prevents me from just putting something back in the closet or piling things in a corner of the room, where they annoy me (I hate clutter!). It's perfect that they're convenient, yet out of the way, and open, yet not cluttered looking.

I ask my husband when I am on the fence about something or when I can’t decide between items. Often when I am on the fence it is because I can’t decide if something is JFE, and I respect his opinion in those cases. He protests that he doesn’t know anything and that I should ask various women instead, but he has a good eye and can compare how I look in it to other items in my wardrobe.

Janet, congrats on making challenging choices and moving on. I may make similar sorting baskets. Mine are piles in the entryway, paper bags, etc that move into the car and then eventually out.

Sharan, I love the jacket you made! It's funny, I'm really only sad about the Parker because it wasn't cheap and because I gained enough weight that it makes me marvel that somehow I used to fit into it. I'm not sure it's really the style I want to wear now anyway. A good sign that it's time to let go. I actually think I prefer the lower contrast version you've made. The original was a bit stiff too.

Lisa, I don't always ask my husband what he thinks. In fact, I usually don't. But he'll tell me if he particularly loves something, or if he's really not a fan. Often if he's not a fan, it's because I haven't showed him the styling potential of something, but sometimes he actually points out something I didn't realize, or voices an association with a look that I never would have thought of (he once declared a jacket too "corporate" because he could picture one of his old work colleagues wearing it -- I ended up agreeing with him and returned it). I'd say that we're in sync a good 95+% of the time. He's actually one of the most fun and supportive shopping buddies I have! It's mutual too -- we just had a blast shopping for new shirts for him the other day in Austin. He likes my interest in fashion, and he has good taste, so I welcome his input. I totally get that not all men are that way! :-)

Janet, your decisions seem very reasonable. It's hard to let the high-ticket items go. I struggle, too, with whether I should try to sell some of them. But it's not how I really want to spend my time.

I so admired that Parker tweed jacket when I saw it at Nordstrom! It inspired a tweed jacket I made for myself in a class that season. I haven't worn it for quite some time now, and it is kind of small (I made it very fitted, and have never worn it zipped up). I'm hanging on to it for now.

Lisa, I am in your camp of never asking my husband for his opinion but I have recently realized that he likes things that are ‘classically pretty’ and it seems most of the people I hang out do too. So if I wear things he likes, others seem to like it too. Nobody seems to appreciate my avante garde floaty clothes ;)

Janet, it is very useful to hear your rationale, I am sympathetic to the navy Vince jacket and would like to advocate on its behalf. I vote holding zone for it.

This is great Janet! I wish I'd photographed all the 33 items since March now!
I trust my husband's opinion too- mostly. I have slightly different reasons. I try to wear things he has said he likes, in the past, like long full skirts which he has liked for decades ( he will be happy about midi lengths coming back, I'm not quite so happy as I am very short). And if I am not sure about something that costs quite a lot, I may ask. If I LOVE something that costs quite a lot, I will buy it ( I have a separate clothing account which was originally the $8K inheritance from my Dad). The inheritance has run out now so I put some of our shared money into that account as a rough budget. We are both professionals and earn similarly. I feel a bit unfair to him if I spend a great deal on something I am not sure of, so I ask. For instance, he wasn't happy about the cute little red sandals over a year ago for $ 228. He had reasons why he didn't like them as much as the old ones that had to go. I listened- bought others in Australia for $ 49. The originals are still available in my size now $ 114. I will probably still not get them.
I like the look of many of your items but agree with others that a number of them don't much look like your more recent pics?
I find your reasons really helpful and may try to do a similar post in a while, thanks.

Lisa p, I can imagine how foreign it might sound that what your hubs thinks matters. Janet gets it though - because her Jamie is as into her style as Greg is into mine. They are very effective in-house stylists, and we trust their opinions implicitly for our styles. We are always asking for their opinions too - so it's important. Hope that makes sense.

Does this help me? Yes! It is helpful to me when others identify the why of letting something go. These posts take time to put together and I appreciate the effort.

YAY!! You've begun in earnest.

My thoughts? Let them all go. The items that you're hesitating about because they're still great quality etc. -- if you want to, put them on Style Exchange here, either to sell or gift to other Fabbers.

Your edits sounds very well thought out.
I love your holding zone baskets. Much better than the laundry basket that I throw everything haphazardly into and then have to sort again to get rid of.

I like these posts with pictures and thoughts. I think you've thought these through and have sounds reasons for letting the items go.

Too bad we can't have a YLF clothing swap - I'm sure many people have items in good shape that other members would like to try out. Plus, sometimes it's easier to let something go when you know it's going to a good home.

If it makes you feel better, there are only a couple things that to me feel reflective of your current style! And climate realism is key, the mid Atlantic has hot, cold and not much in between:)

It’s always difficult letting go of big ticket items like jackets isn’t it but your reasons seem sound and someone else will be very glad of your castoffs .

Your clothes are all lovely, always are, but I don't think you're making any mistakes here. And with regards to the BCBG jacket? Why do you want to hang onto something showing wear, and that your husb doesn't like (I never ask mine for an opinion on anything I wear nor does he offer - I always smile when you and Angie mention having your husband's approval on something - foreign concept to me !) ?? Fashion moves along, and you're able to update what you need to - so let it go !
