Would also add, asymmetry and unusual color combos-- so, not black & white, bit of the colors you like, find some unexpected( but good!) combos.
Then as already noted by others, don't write off a non- black color that could add edginess just because its not your " seaso"-- find a way to use it away from face.

Edgy and moody may not be the same. Moody brings to mind dark colors but edgy makes me think more about style and attitude that includes "hard" (one way to interpret edgy) or "cutting edge" as in trendy even shocking, or utilitarian as in slightly gear-ish interpretations of clothing.
I do think metals, metallic colors, and unusual fabrics and jewelry/belts/bags would have to do more of the heavy lifting when black is not in the mix, so I agree with the above suggestions of exploring what trims, fabrics and embellishments are most "you" , and then look for those combined with your colors.

I can't grab photos at the moment but I am a big moody colour fan, and while I do wear black sometimes, I generally accomplish my looks with grey, navy and burgundy.

I was just thinking about this today, because I'm trying to incorporate more lighter and brighter colors for summer but still keep them looking a bit edgy and contemporary.

I think the gray family from mid-ranges to pale pearl is the way to go as others have mentioned. Mix and match with white and silver metallic if you don't want to go high-contrast. The cut of tops and the shape of shoes and sandals (leaning more space age, simplified, pointy toe flats or wide strap sandals) can make this look modern. I'm not so into studs or chains, but I do like zippers and buckles. There are leopard print tops in soft grays and white/gray if you like that look. Also you can do skinny or cargo/rate pants in grays. Lastly silver metallic or white belts that look space-age or a bit rock n' roll can be fun.

Astrid -- that COS website is great! I'm absorbing silhouettes and color combos. Wish they had more sale items.

Joy, I can add a hint of black here and there. But prefer not to, because simple said more thinking. I did that job removing black, and most often when you add one black item, you need a repetition of black somewhere. And at the moment I don't want to have a black accessories capsule :)
Metallics are ok, not sure about chains - depends on the item I ques.
In the end of winter I was considering engineer boots, but mostly they come in black, or I have to buy online and abroad, and that's too much fuss, so the idea is on hold at least until fall :)

Fieldmouse, I know that store, but it is a pity they have no live stores in my country.

Astrid, I feel you! Sometimes I am ok with those oversweet colors, but not everyday. But mostly I made peace with light summer color palette.
I'll check COSS thank you :)

Suz, thank you for the advice, I wear taupe and greys quite well.

If you want to go a bit more urban edgy, you can try taupe, greys (including charcoal) , denim, and maybe ink blue in small doses. Another option might be some sort of dark moody cranberries touched with grey -- wearing something lighter near your face.

I was just thinking of the exact same thing. I've started a thread about color and am now thinking I might be a light summer. However, searching for inspiration on Pinterest for Light Summer mostly turns up boards like in the picture below. So not my style.

One brand that came to mind was COS, I don't know if you have access to that? They have a kind of avant-garde look and not only in the usual neutrals but with a lot of color thrown in!

Have you looked at All Saints? http://www.allsaints.com/ I'd say they often have fairly good examples of how to do edgy with taupe, grey, cream. They're probably mostly known for black, but lots of their pieces come in lighter neutrals as well.

Denim and grey sounds like a good start to the look you want. Could you add touches of black that is not near your face? How about engineer boots? Maybe even in a light color? Metallics? Heavy-ish chains?

I would like to do that moody edgy look from time to time. But I don't wear black, or other very dark colors. I don't wear high contrast outfits well (e.g. stark white+black) And I am not keen on studs, spikes and other statement hardware. And don't want to imitate anything metalhead or any other music related style (albeit I can listen to metal and many more, I just don't like that "I belong to that particular group of people" look).
After long research in seasonal color analysis, I think that I am closest to light summer. I add links to LS color palettes below. As you can see nothing says edgy as popsicle colors :D

http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg......26ae90.jpg
http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg......4f656b.jpg

I ques I can take denim blue, and say grey top, but that may be just blah, not edgy. Or make it all accessories game?
Looking forvard for your insight.
