Usually I bid on the items, but if its something I *really* want, I dont think twice with the 'buy it now'...if you love something, dont hesitate too long- great buys can get snatched up quickly! If you miss out on something, it never hurts to write to the seller- sometimes sales fall thru, or they might be able to get another one...another tip- add a odd cent amount - you can beat out someone by even a penny...I usually add 88 cents to whatever dollar amount I bid....hth!

Thanks again. Do you typically do the 'buy it now'? Or, do you find you get a better price on the auctions?

Ive used ebay for years and have had only one bad experience...(with over 80 transactions)You've gotten some great advice, but I would like to add its *very* important to check a seller's feedback ratings and I would also stick with a seller who has at least 30 transactions under their belt. If you are bidding on a item (as opposed to a 'buy it now' sale) Ive had really good luck bidding with about 8 seconds left before the auction ends- just be SURE to be signed in and ready to bid! Good luck...

I have had only great experiences with ebay too. Communication about measurements, condition, odor, etc. is the key. Like Rae said, it is important to be very specific when asking questions. Also, don't be shy about asking for additional photos. When I buy clothes and shoes from ebay I do it with the thought in the back of my mind that if it doesn't work out I can always turn around and sell it on ebay. Even though I have never had to do that it keeps me in check and reminds me I am discount shopping so I don't get unrealistic expectations.

I have used Ebay for years and years. I usually see something that's too expensive for me in-store, note the size, fabric, measurements, then stalk Ebay until I find it for cheaper. This is the most reliable way to do it, for the reasons that Becky said. I've never been unhappy with an item I've bought this way (jackets, shoes, many pairs of jeans).

I also regularly buy brands I know well and have experience with. I know, for example, that I take an XS in Ben Sherman blazers, but for some reason need a S in all their shirts... if you know a brand well, then you're less likely to be disappointed.

The best way to minimize error when buying "blind" is to ask for lots of very specific information. For example, I learned that, for my jeans tastes, it's not enough to ask if it has "stretch" -- I have to ask the exact fabric content to know how much spandex, lycra, whatever is in the garment. When I want the shoulder measurements, I ask them to measure "across the top, from seam to seam" instead of simply asking for "the shoulder measurements." For boot height, I ask them to measure "from the back of the heel to the top of the shaft, NOT including the sole." For shirts, I ask for the measurement "from armpit to armpit seam." This helps me to know that they are actually measuring the dimensions that matter to me. I also commonly ask the seller what size she wears, and if the item would fit my bra size. A great seller will be happy to answer your questions -- silence and difficult communication, however, is always a bad sign. OH! Also ask if it has been through the dryer -- I've been the victim of shrunken jeans before.

Yikes, I guess I wrote a lot... sorry for the dissertation, but I hope it helps!

Some things I've tried on before in person. Others I ask lots of questions about measurements. Some items can be returned and I also look for that. But in the end, it is a gamble so I never spend more than I can comfortably part with if it doesn't fit, never arrives, etc. I luck out about 80% of the time.

I've had the best luck purchasing items I have tried on, so I know brand, size, style name/number, etc. I also pay close attention to measurements and ask for them if not provided. Fabric content is also important, so I know if an item has stretch, for example.

I've noticed that quite a few people purchase clothes, shoes & bags on eBay. I've bought a couple of items there but am always nervous because you can't try the items on and you can't return them! For those of you that are successful on eBay - what are your strategies? Do you try the items on IRL before bidding? For shoes, how do you know they will fit?

I'd love to hear what's worked for you. Thanks so much!
