LBD - Actually, none of those things should be a red flag. Some people aren't good at coming up with seller names. As for the pics, I don't use a profile picture at all. As for leaving bad feedback out of fear, that is not true. As a seller (like Thistle says) I am absolutely unable to leave bad feedback. All I can do is leave no feedback at all. So if your seller has good ratings, it is worth trying.

My philosophy with ebay is to never spend more than you can lose. PayPal and eBay are really, really good at protecting buyers, and its easy to get a real person if you need one.

TBH, it is harder these days to be a seller on eBay than a buyer. Buyers expect perfect $300 items for ten cents, can be extremely rude, and know that eBay and PayPal will likely uphold their side of the deal if they want to escalate an issue. Then there's the fees eBay takes when you sell, and PayPal charges from your sale $... sometimes it's hard to believe anyone still sells on eBay at all!

Actually, sellers can no longer give retalitory bad feedback. If a buyer pays you, you can give positive feedback or no feedback.

I came across something on eBay last night, and thought I would mention it here... if you're about to spend a pile of money on an item, click on the seller's name and take a careful look at their page. I found a beautiful pair of vintage Dior heels, that I really would love to have - but I wanted to see a photo of the front view, which is not on the listing. So I clicked on the seller's info to contact him/her. That is when I noticed...

Strike One: The seller's name, (I'm not listing the name here but it looks like this): xxrealnamexx - this looks phony, like one of those spammy virus URL's you get when your friend's email has been hacked. Strike Two: the profile picture is a stock photo that I'm pretty sure I've seen on a website like Smart Bargains or the like. But this seller has completed 248 transactions at a 98.5% rating.

However... people frequently will give a good rating, so as not to get retaliatory bad feedback, even if they aren't satisfied with an item. You can find this out by skimming through the feedback commentary.

Right now, I am on the fence about this auction. If I don't get an answer to my question, I definitely won't bid.

Rita, did you file a grievance with eBay? I would, if you think they deliberately misrepresented the item. I did this recently and got free return shipping.

I wouldn't do it if you think it was an honest mistake, though. That's just the risk you run on eBay.

Wow, this stinks!! What a pain.

You would think, if it was a fake, you wouldn't have to pay for return shipping as you would be giving it to the authorities to dispose of counterfeit goods. How does eBay prevent them from reselling the same fake?

Yikes, I'm sorry. That stinks. I hope ebay will resolve the problem for you.

I won't buy things shown with only stock photos, most things from Asia, or items with descriptions clearly ganked from a retailers' site. I also often message to ask for specific item measurements, even if I don't need them, because I figure the people who actually bother to measure and respond are more likely to be legit.

I am so sorry to hear that happened! I am a regular eBay shopper, and I notice a lot of fakes and replicas come out of Asia - particularly China and Hong Kong. Lots of mid-level stuff gets faked - especially Anthropologie. Of course, it may be closer to 'real' than you or I know, because it may be that the same factory or mill has woven or sewn the garment as for the high-end label. But generally the quality looks poorer or the photos look reeeeeally retouched (unless they are using print-type photos, in which case, avoid avoid avoid!)

Fortunately, I haven't received any fakes (well... to my knowledge)...

In general, though, some things I watch for (and avoid) on eBay:

1. Auctions that aren't in 'good' English - i.e., it reads like someone's second language. Use of the word "Lady" instead of "ladies" in the title is often a giveaway. "Banana Republic Lady T-shirt" would tell me to look at where the item came from.

2. A size chart which features what I generally consider Asian sizing, i.e., they say a size 6-8 has a 24 or 25 inch waist. I realize this is British sizing as well, but when a company is selling out of Asia or the United States and it says this, for a non-British clothing company, there's a good chance you're getting something that won't be as pictured.

Things I do look for:

1. At least 75 ratings, with an overall 97% or higher

2. If the seller is selling high-end shoes or a high-end garment, and doesn't have over 100 or 150 ratings, I look at what else they are selling. If they are selling a variety of shoes that are all around the same size (say, 6, 6.5 and an occasional 7), and fairly uniform clothing sizes, and there seems to be a consistency to the type of shoes and clothing being sold, I usually feel this is a real person emptying out their overstuffed closet, and if the price is good, I will bid.

Unless I am specifically shopping a British or European brand, I will set my eBay search results to U.S. Only (if I were in Canada I would choose North America).

I hope this helps other eBay shoppers - but I am so sorry you had to go through this, Rita! :( :(

Wow - that's such a bummer! I've only ever bought 2 clothing items off of eBay and my experience was a very positive one! I got exactly what was shown in the pics - both brand new with tags - and I love them both! (one is a pair of TR Cameron vintage BF jeans - and one is a black Zella jacket.) So . . . I know that you're always taking a chance buying off of eBay, but just wanted you to know that it isn't always the way that you experienced it!

I bought a green Halogen Seamed skirt on Ebay. It was in my hard to find size (4P) and in color I hadn't seen before - amazon green.
