I would just open a case with Ebay. The seller should just refund you the purchase price. You can even open a case with paypal, too, if you needed, too. Definitely don't pay return shipping.

Just wanted to add that it is still worth bugging the seller again. Point out that you are willing to escalate to a case (even if you are not) because they knowingly misrepresented the item against Ebay policy. It sucks to have to pay good money for nothing but the privilege of pointing out someone else's mistake.

For electronics and gadgets, dealextreme.com has a huge selection at ridiculously low prices and the shipping is cheap or free. We get earphones for under $3 that the guys I work with said were better than the $40 ones they bought at future shop. It might be worth checking out.

Thanks Kari! That makes me feel a little better!

Rae - thanks for the head's up; I don't buy very much, maybe 3 or 4 things a month? If that? I will make sure to ask the seller if it's genuine from now on; or just suck it up and buy it at Future Shop

Lyn, sellers cannot leave bad feedback - Ebay has removed that option, so don't worry about that at all.

How much do you buy on Ebay? They do keep track of how many cases you open, to try and catch people who falsely demand refunds in order to get something for nothing - if you buy a lot, you might want to pick your battles and save cases for higher-dollar disputes. If you don't buy that much, it doesn't matter.

For a phone case, though, I would personally just lump it and pay for the return shipping and make a point to ask every seller if it is genuine leather from now on. A case will take a long time to close before Ebay will step in, and they will probably tell you to return the item, anyway. Not because you're in the wrong, but because they deal with a high volume of service issues and it seems like they don't take the time to read all the details. In my experience they have kind of just made it sound like I was lucky to get a refund at all.

Lyn, didn't they disable the ability for sellers to leave negative feedback about buyers? Perhaps I'm remembering wrong.

Thanks so much; I'll try contacting them again - I'm not too worried about them leaving me bad feedback because I only buy and don't sell; and people generally are happy when I pay them immediately regardless of my rating

Have you tried contacting them again and making that point? Or maybe the return shipping isn't all that much on a small package like a iPhone case and it's not worth the headache or risking your positive feedback rating. (Or did I read something a long time ago about how sellers aren't allowed to give negative feedback any more?)

Coincidentally, I'm in a similar boat right now. I've had very good luck with eBay over the years, but today I got an e-mail from UPS saying that an item with a specific ETA date won't be here until after I need it. I wrote to the seller and they were kind of like "too bad, sorry--estimates are just estimates." (Agreed, but he had the ability to send it in time but didn't.) I'm annoyed but I suppose he's technically right, and stuff like this is the price of doing business (and saving money) on eBay.

I'd suggest contacting the seller one more time, pointing out that the mistake wasn't yours (sometimes I've softened my tone by suggesting that it was an honest mistake on their part, and that maybe their supplier was providing them with the wrong, sub-par merchandise). If you wanted to play hardball you could even say that you don't want to open a dispute about such a small matter. That would surely get their attention; it may not be fair, but buyers do have a disproportionate amount of control over the feedback process.

I had a similar issue with a stinky, non-leather Kindle cover, and the seller was awesome about taking it back and paying the postage, but apparently the seller's opportunity for awesomeness has already been lost. Good luck!

Hey ladies!

I ordered an iPhone case from a seller on eBay whose listing stated that the case was leather. It arrived today and there is NO WAY this is made of leather ... it smells and feels like cheap plastic at best.

I contacted the seller who suggested I return it (I pay return shipping).

Should I suck it up and pay return shipping; or should I open a Paypal dispute with them? I really don't think I should be stuck paying for something that wasn't as described; since it was such a major difference.

Thanks for your opinions!
