Gaylene, you are an inspiration. I've been hesitant to try this look as well, because I'm always afraid of the dreaded MDAL syndrome. Pictures, please!

Lyn67--ah, you want evidence I just didn't publicly humiliate myself for the fun of it A picture of my slouchy backside on the Internet is a bit daunting, though... you do realize I grew up in an era where pictures were something that you put into a photo album that was then hidden away on a book shelf, never to be seen again.

Carole, if I can do it, so can you. Take those pants out of the bag and join me on the wild--er, slouchy--side!

Ramya, Janet, and Laura--romantic once the bruises healed. I hit him pretty hard and he was limping around for the next week or so. He likes to tell everyone that he was totally stunned by me when we first met--sounds so much better than concussed.

Lyn D, my DH is a remarkable man in many ways, as evidenced by his decision to date me after I nearly put him into a coma on our first meeting. After 40 years, he knows me better than I know myself. I LOVE that J Crew jacket; it's so totally my style!
Thanks Scarlet, Nancylee, Claire, and Janet for making me feel that I'm not the only person who has had an about face about this whole slouchy pant thing. I know that it's repeating what Angie always says, but the devil is REALLY in the details. The pants looked quite dumpy on me until I had followed all the guidelines, then it was almost magical how those babies were transformed. I was quite dumbfounded and transfixed by what I saw in the mirror.

Ah, MaryK, your fearlessness is really what makes me leap into these things. Anyone who can make emerald green and red look sophisticated is a wonder to me!

ManidipaM, Angie, and Janet, you have no idea of how lucky I am with having ended up with Mr. G. I actually did run him over on the ski hill. My girlfriends and I were novice 20-something skiers who were swooning over this sophisticated, gorgeous, older (early 30s) Norwegian ski instructor so we decided to book a group lesson with him after he smiled at us a couple of times. My friends were a bit more hesitant, but I threw myself into flying down those slopes with great enthusiasm, but very little skill. Unfortunately, the future Mr. G made the mistake of turning his back to me (a mistake he has never made since!) and I plowed into him knocking both of us to the ground in a tangle of legs, arms, skis, and poles. I was SO mortified! But he did buy me a drink later that evening and the rest, as they say, is history. Personally, I think he thought it was his duty to save everyone else on the hill from a similar fate by getting my skiing (and me?) under some sort of control.

This post and subsequent comments was a great read! It also hit home with me as I have been inwardly pooh-poohing boyfriend jeans all this time but spontaneously just came home with some myself. In my case I now have to work on the details whether this pair is really right for me, but the mental barrier has been broken all the same. I would also love to see your outfit!

Ah, you guys are all so sweet about my grovelling at your fashionable feet.

And, Angie, this whole slouchy pant thing is entirely the result of all the attention I received from the sales staff when I strolled into the store wearing my beloved, Angie-recommended, Downtown Field jacket. The sales assistants were so taken with the jacket, it seemed churlish not to give into their pleas to try the pants. (Side-note: That jacket was a Christmas present from my DH; his faith in Angie's picks is so complete that he ordered and wrapped the jacket without consulting or telling anyone…)

Seriously, I have gained a couple of insights from my humiliating retreat. First, as you grow older, some trends become more bewildering than interesting. I mean, given all the other trials of aging--wrinkling skin, drooping bustline, saggy mid-section, and greying hair--the thought of wearing pants that sagged around my waist and backside just seemed to add insult to injury, especially when I've been so diligent about keeping up my diet and exercise routine. To be honest, those slouchy pants looked like a big mistake until I rolled, tucked, belted, and wore them with exactly the right top and shoes. THEN, they made sense. So Insight #1 is to faithfully follow Angie's guidelines to get the hang of a new silhouette; wearing some of these trends obviously doesn't come as easily in my mid-sixties as it did when I was in my twenties.

When it comes to age-appropriate dressing, Insight #2 was that it's easier to try wearing trends as casual wear than in other environments. I doubt that I'll wear the slouchy look when my aim is to look polished, sophisticated, and well-groomed. It might be possible for me to look this way wearing slouchy pants, but, at my stage in life, I doubt that I have the skills or inclination to do this look well enough to feel comfortable. But that's OK; I actually like having a separate casual wardrobe that reflects another side of my personality.

Last, but not least, my final insight is that it takes a community like YLF to keep a (almost) senior citizen dressing well. It's just harder not to fall in a rut when most of your peers start retreating to elastic-waisted pants, polo shirts, and fleece jackets. So huge thanks to all of you--Unfrumped, Ceit, Sarah, Mona, Ramya, Sheila, Suz, Kristin, Kkards, Dianthus, Caro, Deborah, Firecracker, MIa, Deb, Sveta, Elle, Rachylou and the rest of the YLF crew--for being such a wonderful source of ideas, inspiration, and support. I obviously need you, and Angie, as my guides if I am to have any shot at growing old with a modicum of style and grace. And I'm beginning to like the taste of humble pie; the stuff grows on you. ;)

Gaylene I posted about how I hoped I wouldn't come round to slouchy trackpants but then they were suggested in another post as being great work pants for me. I found ones that didn't do all the things I disliked about slouchy trackpants & now I own them. I also posted about not wanting pointy flats (heels are OK cos they make feet look smaller) because they are often too narrow but also because they make my feet look huge. I often have to size up due to the width. Well then I start seeing colour blocked ones & ones with the middle missing & realize that those styles don't look as big due to chopping the foot in half so I may end up with some of those some day.

It is OK to dislike a style for us & it is OK to change our minds.

Hear, hear! Gaylene, you are a real trooper and Mr.G is your resident fashion stylist now!
I have jumped into slouchy trend from the deep end (surprising myself in the process to no end but enjoying it tremendously) so I am applauding here.
I am still to wear out my blush khakis yet but they feel more summery due to a color. Then we will be triplets with you and Suz!
