He was raised by academics from Berkeley. He didn’t insist on this, just made sad noises. However, he had a dream of what his wedding would look like, and I wanted to honor it too, though rather then the usual gender stereotype of the bride ruling all. (We took a very critical eye, gender-wise, to every single aspect of the wedding. Some traditions were kept, others rejected.) My original compromise was going to be light blue, but I fell in love with an ivory dress in the end. My appearance was the one aspect of the wedding where I cared enough to insist that it be just so, and I ended up being thrilled with how I looked.
