That was a big one. I remember when I lived in CA during a big one. I woke up to my bed bouncing up and down on the floor. Then when I got out of bed it felt like the house was sliding back and forth on the foundation. That one had loads of strong aftershocks.  Have you had many of those? I remember pretty much just spending the day reading books under the table, LOL.  My parents' house has chandeliers.  One of them was over the foot of my bed when I lived there.  (Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking either, but at least it wasn't the head of the bed?)  Anyway, they would start rattling a few seconds before earthquakes started, which was kind of an effective (if scary) warning system.  Funnily enough, though, I didn't even recognize the last couple of earthquakes I experienced (both smallish though) - one was a couple years ago when I was in San Diego and I remember being annoyed that my neighbors in the hotel were having a wild party and stomping on the floor!  LOL.  J. My first "real" quake, so very glad it wasn't a 7 like yours. Very strange noise and sensation, but a timely reminder to keep shoes and clothes nearby! I read the NYT (online) this morning and there was no mention of this whatsoever. It wasn't until I was in church that the minister mentioned it. A tsunami caused by the big 1964 earthquake in Alaska came into SF Bay near us. The wave came in under the gate and made a left hand turn up into San Pablo Bay, causing a lot of damage to marinas in Marin County. I was too little to have paid attention, but my mother remembers it. Funny thing is was when I was in 9th grade in Central Washington state, ie very very far from the coast. We had to watch a tsunami safety video.
