Most earth tones I can't wear because they wash me out. But, I'm happy to see all of these colors in the stores just because it seems like they've been missing for so long. I can wear olive, sometimes, and really rich oranges.

You're so right. I was in Ann Taylor Loft over the weekend and totally fell in love with the beautiful earth tones there. I got a chartreuse-ish colored rayon/tinsel tee and a rust/orange cardigan with chiffon trim that look so lovely together. I admit that I feared we might drown in beige and mauve and colors that I hate on my coloring this season, but so far the colors I've seen look beautiful!

The last time I looked, the stores here were full of black/grey/dirty purple/mushroom color choices. I even complained at the Gap about the lack of color in tops. I'm excited for the palette to change. Coral is especially good for me if not too bright; burnt orange and olive green also seem to work as do some browns and beiges.

I hope the earth tones in the store will help me expand the colors in my wardrobe. Lately ALL I wear is purple. I think I can pulll of some earth tones, brown, carmel, and coral at least.

I'm enjoying seeing these colors as a) I'm trying not to spend a lot of money on clothing; b) they are different!; and c) it does seem like those that suit the deeper, earthy colors have had the short end of the stick lately.

Laura -- I wear only cool-toned shades near my face, but love olive/pea/spring green bottoms with shades of rose, blue, purple, (cool) browns etc.

I'd put pinky-coral in the cool category myself, but off the top of my head an orange-coral, orange, or terracotta shade looks great with greyed and spruce-y greens, cool browns, blues, and plums.

I was in the shops for only an hour last weekend and was practically running from rack to rack because of all the wonderful colors. It made me realize that a big reason I dress mostly in neutrals is because most of the time the colors that are available are not really right for me. Usually if I see one darn thing in a "me" color I will buy it for that reason alone. I hope selfishly that this palette will last more than one season to give me more time to add more wonderful color to my wardrobe. dreamy sigh.

I have found myself really attracted to these colors lately, so I'm excited. Last year I was allllll black for fall, and it is not the direction I'm heading in this year! I've already acquired an olive pencil skirt, cognac boots, brown shoeties, and am tempted buy a rustic orange cardigan with a nude cami blouse. I still have my blacks, grays, navy, and purples, but am having fun pairing them with earth tones with texture.
Jean, I'm seeing these colors at Nordstrom (Caslon, Halogen, to name a few), Ralph Lauren, AT LOFT, JCrew, and so on.

I used to wear earth tones almost exclusively - rarely blacks, grays, etc. Then I started to worry I was just blending in to the woodwork (ha, ha) and started looking for more high contrast colors to give my outfits an edge. I've been a bit afraid to revisit them ever since.

I absolutely love earth tones -- the warmer, the better! Chestnuts, caramels, cinnamons, olives, etc. Two of my favorite color combos together are olive/purple and olive/orange.

Angie, is it a very pinkish coral that you can wear? Love that color!

I would love to know how someone with a cool color palette can work earth tones in to her wardrobe - i.e., a bright olive green, a pinkish coral, a lemon yellow. But now that I write that, it all sounds more like spring than fall. Hmmmm.

Nice to hear your thoughts on earth tones, ladies. Thanks for chiming in.

Maya, the pictures you linked to break up the neutral palette with dark purple. Nice!

Hmmmm. Actually, I do find your sudden aversion to pops of colour inconsistent - even though you maintain that you are consistent by linking to a previous thread. It was only weeks ago that you were sick of all your neutral dresses and desperate for colour. And in the last week in-particular interested in several bright bags. I think you wake up each morning and have a different point of view on colours and neutrals :)

For the record, I have never evangelized that you must add colour to an outfit. I love neutral outfits and wear them too. I'll even encourage an all black outfit if it has texture - but this is often executed effectively. I hope that make sense.

Maya- I am feeling the same way lately about color pops, but I have also pretty much stopped wearing any bright colors. I think that I am going to have to get some orange yarn (or dye some!) for a sweater for myself.

I really hope that orange is as prevalent as Angie says-- it is my favorite color! I honestly think I look good in most colors except pastels and most shades of purple and pink and blue-red. I am an autumn, but generally look good in grey and blue as well as the warmer colors-- I think it has something to do with my eyes and complexion. I have warm brown eyes, but with a thick grey ring around the outside and have more warm olive skin than yellow. So, I guess what i am missing this season are the accent colors-- esp. in tops. I don't want an all neutral look, but I can't imagine wearing only orange, coral, and the tomato reds (esp. since I have only seen the red offered, and feel most corals are too summery). It seems like everything else I have seen offered in a color is purple or blue red or pink.

I haven't noticed this yet! When I was last in any stores, a few weeks ago, everything was awash in purple, gray and black (Ann Taylor, Banana Republic). I will keep my eyes peeled for this when I'm next out shopping. Warm autumn colors don't work for me, but I love earthy, muted tones in general, so will enjoy seeing this.

I'm not a fan of earthtone colors. It might have something to do with a flowered orange and rust couch that I lived with in the '70's, along with orange overstuffed chairs and green shag carpet! Besides, the colors just don't work with my skin tone and eye color. So . . . I'm passing on these colors this fall - and happily living with my grays, blacks, purples, and turquoise!

Angie, maybe some of our fabulous members who wear earth tones well could model them for a post.

I am a very staunch cool color wearer, but for some reason, olive green works for me. I can even wear it next to my face. But I have never ventured into oranges, for example, although I love coral. Who knows? Maybe with the forum's help, I could find the right shade.

I love wearing neutrals with pops of color and do it all the time as well. Especially black clothes with colorful shoes. Love it.

Earth tones really aren't my style, but I'm interested in dabbling in a bit of olive.

I like to wear it all and do so consistently:

1. A neutral outfit with lots of texture
2. A neutral outfit with bright pops of colour
3. Mixing a few brights in one outfit - no neutrals

But still no earth tones. Kate, you look amazing in earth tones!

Tanya, I love your neutral and jewel toned wardrobe. It really works for you.
