I had a hunch you'd be wanting to convert it into earrings Antje;-)
Tip: A lot of Etsy sellers are perfectly willing to make things to order, so it couldn't hurt to ask... (bare in mind though that in pendant form, this is quite heavy, so I'm not sure how much possible earrings would weigh).

And I agree, it's either bold earrings or a bold necklace, both would be overpowering.

Oooh, Inge, I love the pendant you linked to from etsy. If that came as an earring, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'm not quite there yet with the necklaces (also, I wouldn't be able to wear all those bold earrings if they competed with a necklace) so I'll sadly have to pass for now. But I definitely have to make time for some extensive etsy browsing soon. What a fun site!

Shiny (and everyone else who is interested): I was browsing Etsy today and found a couple of sellers who have nice looking studs with semi-precious stones (not sure if you're into that, but since you mentioned you're considering gemstones, these might be a fun alternative to play around with).

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?u.....id=5011975

Oh, I like this website too, a bit more expensive than Etsy, but some beautiful pieces:

Fantastic Antje, I was really curious to hear your thoughts on this as well!

You bet I will be trying other stud styles too, and I actually love the ones Patience linked to (hey, I can be classy and playful at the same time right, grin;-) And Etsy is amazing indeed, you can browse hours and hours there and still find something new every time.
(by the way, I thought of you when I saw this pendant: http://www.etsy.com/view_listi.....id=8098723 - I have a similar one and think it looks quite funky, not sure if this is something you would consider?)

Do keep us posted about the diamond studs (I usually have to try earrings on to see if they will work too). I'm seeing a pattern here: YLF and Angie really have us all 'stepping out of our boxes'. And that's a good thing!

This really does help Antje, I've received some great advice and tips in this thread, and I'm already noticing that I'm trying to 'branch out' more as far as earrings are concerned.

And no, you hadn't mentioned it yet (the hair), but thank you so much for the compliment *happy blush*

Yohoo, I am so sorry to have missed this thread so far. What an honor to be called on as the earring queen I'm not sure whether I'll be of too much help, though, because I think we like different styles. But here are my thoughts.

Inge, the studs look super on you. Since you like a classy and unfussy style, I don't see anything wrong with studs being your signature style - but I would encourage you to try some fun new styles of studs. I LOVE some of the studs on etsy Patience linked to; I might have to order one of those flowery pairs myself. Too cute! Those might be too playful for your taste, but others have made great suggestions for studs that have interesting detail but still fall into the more classy category.

Personally, I like bolder flashier styles with lots of color. I don't wear necklaces at all (I probably have the same issue with necklaces that you and some others have with earrings: I'm curious and interested, but am stuck on the belief that they don't look good on me and haven't found a style I like on me), and I don't have many bracelets (though I'd love to have more), so all my jewelry "oomph" is in the earrings. I think bold earrings, selected to match (or provide interesting contrast to) to my outfit, are part of my signature style. And I have many different sources. I buy most of them at local little neighborhood boutiques; there are two stores in my area that I almost dread going into because I know I will not leave without a new pair of earrings... But I've also bought some at Target and Express, as well as at street fairs and even my local
farmer's market. And occasionally I splurge and go to a higher end jewelry store in Seattle where they have classy but still artsy and somewhat funky styles. Usually I don't like to spend too much, though, since I do lose earrings regularly :-(

I have not ordered from etsy so far, but plan to. They just have so many nice things that I find it time-consuming to browse, so I just haven't taken the time yet. And I do generally like to try earrings on; I never know whether a style will really work on me.

And even though my current earring collection is all about funky colorful fashion earrings (with a few artsy metal ones that are classier), I would love to own a set of diamond studs. I always thought I'd treat myself for a special occasion but haven't yet. It seems a little out of the box for me but I've always wanted some, go figure. I hope I won't be disappointed when I finally try some.

I don't know how much help this was. I definitely encourage you to try some different styles (and I agree that bigger/longer earrings take some getting used to; on the flipside I now feel naked when I forget to put on earrings in the morning!). But if you find that classy studs fit you best then just experiment within that category.

BTW, not sure I've mentioned this before, but I LOVE your haircut!!!

Patience: good to know about the rosebuds, definitely something to consider.
Shiny: I'm definitely going to keep looking for simple peridot earrings, hope you will find some saphires and rubies soon. Maybe you can 'accidentally' leave the computer unmanned with this screen open when you know DH is going to use it. Note to Shiny's DH: this is a HINT!-)
Sihaya: thanks for the encouragement. That's exactly what I've been doing (going for something larger and thicker, but I haven't found anything yet that works I'm afraid). Not giving up on any style just yet though:-) And I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures!
Angie: I can just imagine she looks fantastic! (and I think Antje has missed this thread, bummer;-)

Sihaya, have you cut your hair? Isn't it still bobbed? Guess I’ll see on Thursday!

Come to think of it, I have an uber dramatic client with very short boyish black hair that she spikes in the front. She wears HUGE diamond studs (faux I think). This is all she wears. I love the way they contrast her boyish hairstyle. Works like a charm.

Yooohoooo Antje. We need short hair earring advice.

Inge,

A friend of mine has large diamond studs (not real) and they look fantastic on her with her short hair. I no longer recognize her without them and they go with everything. So developing a signature stud style is a great idea. Also, belonging to the high drama Antje earring club, I would nudge you one more time to try large ones as well. However, instead of trying dainty large ones, have you ever tried thicker large ones? I have short hair as well and find that a chunkier contrast works quite well. I still haven't managed to get photos up on the site but when I do, I will show you what I mean.

Find some peridots in a simple setting that isn't fussy. I have two pairs - both are bday gifts from my DH (it's my birthstone). One is fussy with gold swirly stuff and a diamond - I rarely wear this set - the other is an oversized chunk of periodot but in a very simple, nondescript setting. All you see is the periodot, not the setting.

I think studs-as-signature can work great - and I like the idea of pursuing gemstones. On my wishlist is simple saphires... nothing fancy.... I don't like the overdone settings either. And maybe rubies.

I might have to buy these for myself - DH is just not getting the hints.

Haha! I thought we might have some similar taste in earrings (although with my longer hair I go more for danglys). I don't know about the violets, but the rosebuds I got are very tiny so I don't think there's any problem of sticking out. As far as the 80's earrings go, I'm not even sure what to search on to give you an example. But what I'm thinking of is very low profile, just a few thin silver chains hanging down a couple of inches or less and connected together at the top. Kind of disco.
Studs as a signature sounds good too.

Wow, such great advice from all of you. Thanks ladies!! And it's quite reassuring to hear that I'm not the only one with short hair struggling with this 'earring dilemma'.
I'm going to answer your suggestions one by one, so sorry in advance for the long reply.

Rosebud: I am going to try your suggestion of the small oblong, 'slim look' hoops as soon as I can. (and thanks for linking to that website)

Becky: do tell if any of the suggestions here work for you.

Angie: thanks for the compliment. It's funny really, I have been noticing lately that I'm often naturally drawn to exactly those styles and shapes that seem to suit me best.
And of course, why didn't I think of Antje sooner? She seems to have developed her very own earring style that fits here personality perfectly, but Patience is right, my style is less bold and I too am more attracted to delicate jewelry.

Antje: do tell where you find all those fantastic earrings!!

Shiny: loads of excellent ideas! I really loved the look of the Argento Vivo earrings in the picture, but when I tried on something similar today (can't say I'm not eager, can you), they didn't look good. That style appears to have just too much 'metal' going on for me. I think Nicole is definitely on to something, and that I should experiment with 'thinner wire' ones.
About the diamond studs: I don't have any. As a matter of fact I think pearls are my diamonds if that makes any sense (I'm guessing Angie can relate to this). Too much sparkle just doesn't work for me (I also tried a pair of peridot studs today - the colour was great with my eyes, thanks! - but they were set in some sort of sparkly prongs and even that put me off. I like them on other people, but a pearly stud just seems to fit my style, face and personality better - and they too can be dressed up or down for any occasion methinks.
(your tiny hoops with the pearl sound marvellous by the way)

Shannon: you're absolutely right that a statement necklace AND statement earrings would be too much. I'm trying new necklace looks too and I'll definitely stick to small earrings or no earrings at all when wearing a bolder necklace.

Monica: I did own one pair of small, subtle short dangly earrings (or were they droops? what's the difference people?-) years ago, can't find them anywhere now. Something with a tiny amethyst set in a sort of small teardrop wiry thingie, and they looked nice. So thanks for reminding me. And I know what you mean, for me there's a difference too, between my pixie cut straight from the hairdresser's and just before I'm due for a cut again.

Nicole: of course I would do that for you if I had larger earrings around, but I don't at the moment;-) But I love your suggestion and actually think you are on to something there. Will keep you posted!
Button styles: I think I have (if you mean flatter studs, a bit in the shape of real buttons;-) For me they fall under 'studs' I guess, and fortunately these suit me too (yeeha!).
And I can go a little bigger in circumference as long as the earrings lay fairly flat against my ears (spot on again Nicole). As soon as there's any 'build-up in upward direction' and they start to stick out more, it just looks like there's something on my ear that really doesn't belong there;-)

Patience: aha you like Etsy as well, amazing what's on there, isn't it. And you're not going to believe this, but I've had those white rose buds bookmarked for quite some time now!! I think I like the white violets even better, but my only concern is, again, the possible 'sticking out too much factor'.
Those pussywillow earrings are something that I would certainly consider, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that style will work for me.
The eighties chain earrings: not sure what you mean, could you link to an example?

Anyway, I'm really chuffed to hear from all of you that studs do look quite good on me.
I'll keep looking and trying on different styles, but if they don't work out, then that's fine too. It's not like there aren't enough beautiful studs and buttons and other small earrings to keep me busy for a long, long time. I'm going to experiment a bit more with different colours and shapes (bought a pair of small silver square studs with rounded corners this afternoon, oh la la, how daring of me;-), and I will look into gemstones too.

Maybe studs can be my signature look, as far as earrings are concerned. Hey, I quite like the sound of that!

Inge, maybe just a tad fussy in the earring department...

On studs-- They do look great on you. You should really check out etsy.com. They have a great variety. I got a pair of tiny white rose buds that look so refreshing every time I wear them. The white frosting ones on this page with some other ideas as well:

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?u.....id=5005490

On dangling styles-- Based on Antje's pictures, I think you could definitely pull off large colorful dangling styles. The bolder the better. But I'm thinking this is just not your style. I myself am more attracted to delicate jewelry (I prefer the word delicate to dainty) although I have been trying to incorporate more chunky necklaces. So, what about extending the stud idea to something that dangles a bit and ends in a ball. I've got these:

http://www.etsy.com/view_trans.....id=9042292

Also, etsy has a lot of simple earrings made of vintage materials. For example I've got a pair of dangly ones where the dangle is an octagonal crystal from a chandelier. I've also seen some that use vintagy buttons as dangles. Here's an example:

http://www.etsy.com/view_listi.....id=9005423

I can also see you in some of those chain earrings like they had in the 80's, but not too gaudy. Do you know what I mean?

Hi Inge! Could you possibly take photos of yourself in some larger earrings? I'd like to see you in small hoops--say 1" across. Oval hoops, per Rosebud's suggestion are a good idea too. I would keep it simple, classic and airy. (thinner wire)

I must say, I like you in studs too though, and how about button styles? Have you tried anything that is a little bit bigger than the studs in the photo, but still sit flat on you ear?

Personally, I can't wear studs or any earring that covers my ear. I rarely wear earrings because I always wear necklaces. The only time I wear earings is if my top is too complicated for a necklace.

I have the same haircut, and some of my features are similar to yours. I had a horrible time with earrings when I first got it cut short--I think I gave up altogether for about a year and opted to play up other accessories. I often wear diamond or CZ studs. I sometimes wear other gemstone and pearl studs. I never wear hoops--the round ones look funny, and I haven't seen an elliptical hoop that was flattering, to my taste, and not too costly. But I do wear dangling earrings, especially when my hair is on the longer end of pixie (when I say that, I mean in those last two weeks before the trim appointment). I often wear shorter dangly earrings, like these: http://www.zinniastores.com/en.....038;page=2
Or these: http://www.zinniastores.com/en.....038;page=9
But never very short dangles, like these: http://www.overstock.com/Jewel.....oduct.html? The shape of that kind of earring looks odd on me when my ears don't have hair over them. Nor do I wear long dangly earrings with short hair--my jawline doesn't need any more visual breadth!

Hope this helps!

I have short hair and don't like earrings on me either. I have just given up. I think it's too much when you have short hair. Keep the studs, they are perfect. Go for a statement necklace instead.

When my hair is shorter (and I've had it as pixie-ish as yours) I prefer smaller earrings too. And when I have a statement necklace on, I prefer small earrings or no earrings. Statement necklaces are in fashion now, so I find I reach for studs most often.

But, it could also be a matter of getting your eye accustomed to the look; I never really wore necklaces before this past year or so. I've slowly learned to like myself in the look. Prior, I went through a long bracelet period.... and now I'm tired of bracelets. Go figure!

If you do not have diamond studs, get yourself a pair! You can buy fake ones - that's what I do, because I'm always losing earrings so I don't bother spending good money on real ones. Look for a costume set of "diamond" studs in three sizes, small, medium, large. Probably have them at Macy's or Nordie's. I feel goofy with the large ones, but I'm only 5'0". I can do the medium though.

Also since you have green eyes, try peridot studs. Will really bring out your eye color!!!

I do wear hoops but I keep them dainty. One of my favs are tiny gold hoops that have a pearl suspended on them. You can wear with or without the pearl.

I do also have some dangly earrings, but being petite with a short neck, it's all about SCALE. They can't be too long. My DH once bought me some lovely dangly earrings for my bday, but they dangled so long they touched my shoulders and I had to return them. Sigh.

I also think I look better in silver and white gold, but I have been giving gold another try. Look for pinkish golds - you might find that more to your liking.

Hmm... what about something like this?

I don’t wear earrings. You need to speak to Antje!

But I adore a small simple pearl or stud. It looks fab on you.

I love this site. The jewelry is not cheap, but it seems worth it. Some of these hoops are very interestingly shaped.

What a great question, Inge. I also have short hair and tend to be more comfortable with small earrings, either studs or small hoops. I'm 5'0", so I attributed this preference to my petite height, but I saw where you mentioned on another thread you are 5'8", so I guess that reasoning wouldn't apply to you! I'm afraid I'm of no help, but I'll eagerly await answers to your question.

Good! Don't give them up. You have beautiful bone structure and with your short hair it just looks great.

Mine happen to be fairly long, but they are very slim. I was thinking maybe a small-medium pair on you; a little bit of a drop but not too much. Maybe even a flat surface instead of the rounded (if that makes sense) so from the front they look very slim. I think the oblong shape looks much classier than rounded, particularly the larger you get.

Oh it does actually, good to know that you like them (because I wasn't planning on giving up small studs, I do like them too;-)

Oblong hoops: haven't tried those yet no, but had been wondering if that might be a good idea. Maybe I could start with a pair that's not too big/thick (not sure if that's the correct term in English)?

This doesn't help, but I love how the studs look on you. Beautiful! I have some oblong hoops that I love, and I think that shape might work better for you than a round hoop. Have you tried that?

I'm having a hard time finding earrings that suit me. After a period of not wearing any at all, I'm getting into them again, but always feel that except for small stud earrings, nothing else really looks good.

As soon as I try something a bit bigger, or even a dainty dangling style (which I love on other people), it doesn't seem to fit. They all look a bit exaggerated or unnatural and out of proportion (and it's not as if I have a disproportionally small head;-).
Could it be that I just need to get used to this new look for me? (I do get the impression that people with longer hair can carry off a broader variety of earrings)

So, any tips on styles (and colours and materials too) are more than welcome. I like a modern and clean, classy look, nothing too baroque or flashy, but I do have a vintage-esque streak.
Oh yes, as far as metals are concerned: I tend to look best in silver and white gold, yellow gold is not flattering on me (which I don't mind, I prefer cool colours anyway).

As most of you know, I have a short pixie cut and a squarish/rectangular face with good cheekbones, hazel eyes and pale skin. Newcomers (a warm welcome from me by the way) who haven't seen my picture in the Who's Who thread, this is me:
