I see bold, relaxed elegance most clearly in #2 and #8. That being said, I really like #1 and #6. Those outfits say “relaxed elegance,” to me, so you have to bring the bold with your personality, which I’m sure you can do with confidence and ease.

About the numbering, maybe just put numbers on each of the pic that correspond to what you write, or say “the first part of pic 1”, etc. Or I could just get smarter!

Thanks Joy (we cross posted earlier and I missed your comments!!) Yes the blogger has a style I admire but she is strongly into neutrals.

Thanks Fashintern - I know what you mean about numbering but I am not sure of the solution. Usually I only snap one pic of an outfit and I like to crop out some of the background.... Sadly our industry is not at all glamourous - stressful and lots of hard compliance work.

Thanks Lyn - I liked most of these looks and they show what I am working with - a real mix of old and new.

Carla - all packed - I will try and update the capsule today!! Thank you:)

Torontogirl - you could carry off the trench better than me. I do like having one though it is not a workhorse.

Jenni - yes!!! If it was a store rather than an upmarket charity shop I would have been more discerning - but it is hard. Anyway I will evaluate - it would be a good dress for the races or a summer garden party (neither which are frequent on my list of summer events).

Well I think you look great in the trench. I am with Bijou on the pushy SA. There is a Veronika Maine store in our local mall where I peek in to see if a particular SA is on and I won’t even go in to look at the racks if she is. She was that pushy one time I tried something on and seemed to take it as a personal failure that I didn’t buy it. I am glad I didn’t, I am sure it would not have got 30 wears. I also like to think about things and sometimes bring my own clothes back in to try with the item. It’s not all about her, right?
Have a great trip!

Thanks that is very insightful Smittie. I don't think the trench is perfect on me- I never feel quite right (but I think they suit people who walk to work - I would have worn it a lot on my old buggy pushing, walking school bus days.....you don't walk a 17 year old six foot son to school!!)

The white dress in 4 was - not exactly a mistake - but a slight misstep. I think it is too short. It gets worn and funnily enough here is recognised as a designer piece (which it is) but I don't love it as much as I hoped. Not a good pic though - 1 2 and 6 (blouse and blue jeans) are my preferred photos.

I do have to watch drape - it can make me look quite visually large due to hips and shoulders....but I am open to a drapey trench or similar. Food for thought!!

I think 2 & 6 nail the bold, relaxed elegance vibe. That skirt with the botanical pattern look like your friend designed it with you in mind. 3 and 9 fit it also, and that black skirt has a lot of potential. But dropping off a helicopter kit? Your life is a lot more exciting than mine. Have fun in Italy!

ETA small whine: if you group multiple shots on one photo to upload, I prefer they be multiple views of the same outfit, rather than numbering outfits differently than the numbers on the pix. But maybe I’m just tired.

These look wonderful on you Sal.
You wear culottes very, very well. I love the easy linen look of them.
I love the column of washed black (or maybe it's navy?). Very sophisticated, but also casual, because of the fabrics.
I like the trench, but I think you do even better in the low-key green topper in the second picture.

Anyway: So which ones fit your 'bold, relaxed, elegance' goal best?
#1 (trench) look elegant and relaxed, but not bold.
#2 (patterned skirt) looks bold, and relaxed, although I think I would prefer the skirt with a lighter top. I wouldn't call this 'elegant'. More like 'fun' and 'funky'.
#3 (jean culottes) is relaxed and elegant, but less bold. I like the cut of this top on you.
#4 (white dress) you do not look relaxed. The dress is still nice.
#5 (black skirt) is bold, relaxed elegance. (I might be biased as I like dark columns of colour)
#6 (slim jeans with flirty top) is relaxed elegance
#7 (pink) is bold relaxed elegance

I definitely am biased in favour of the relaxed toppers, relaxed v-necks/scoops, and generally less structure up top on you. For some reason I like the trench less, even though it is a classic piece. Maybe it's because I know that you could pull off a drapey trench, which I could not, and therefore I want to see it on you! :-)

Cheers ~

Thanks Suntiger. The leopard and culottes was a last minute idea actually. I did like it. I could do with a replacement on these Mary Jane shoes - they are 11 years old and are so comfy. But this will be there last year- thet have had two or three repairs already.

Bijou- I will do a try on of the dress- pushiness is off putting and she kept bringing in things for me to try. Thanks for the support and ideas and I will share some pics.

Andi - thank you! A scarf would have been fun I agree. I bought this single breasted trench at the recycle boutique on sale - it is Sportscraft - a classic Australian brand of high quality. Show us your outfit!!:)

Love your copycat! I'm traveling from MI to Northern CA on business for a week in a few days (temps there same as here, disappointing! Was hoping for warm California!). I wasn't going to take my tan trench, but now I am inspired to! A lot of walking between hotel and conference center, and my almost identical to yours trench will be just the ticket. I too opted for a single breasted model, and am so glad I did. It has a simple elegance, don't you think? Not as predictable. I will be tying a jaunty neckerchief around me neck for some added pizzaz!

My favourite is #1 - I like the simplicity of this look. I agree that your trench differs to the bloggers, which is more of a classic Burberry trench - however, those whilst they look cool, being double breasted and oversized are a lot of fabric hanging around - and not the easiest piece to wear. I like your trench and how you wear it.

Let's see the new dress on. I totally sympathise with the pushy sales person, especially since it is for a good cause. However, my absolute hard and fast rule is when a sales person gets pushy I refuse to buy. I just say "I really need to think about this" and leave. I have been talked into buying things I didn't want too often and the sad thing is, if I do buy, it puts me off ever returning to the store ever again - which is bad for them too. One store I regularly visit knows that I like to think about things and so now she expects that will be my reaction, even though I am one of her very good and loyal customers.

The new Trelise Cooper skirt is fab and so versatile. I would wear this in summer with a white blouse and sandals and in winter with knee high boots and a black sweater.

All your pictures are very true to your style and great. Hope you have a wonderful holiday and share pictures with us!

Leopard + culottes and blouse + jeans are my favorites, but love the new blouse in 6 too. I don't think the trench is bad, just a different sort of collar than the inspo pic. The white dress I'm unsure about, probably due to the sleeve length. I had a dress with short sleeves that I removed, and like it much more now!

Thanks Brooklyn - my posing definitely needs practice!!

Yes the white dress second from the end. I will do a try on at some stage - it can sit in the wardrobe for a couple of months anyway - it was from an upmarket hospice thrift shop - so it only cost $30. If I hand it on without wearing I am happy for that to be a donation- and it is second hand.

I was deciding re the rust culottes - I am thinking one pair jeans, one pair black slouchy pants (for flying mostly), two skirts and one pair crops/culottes (plus some running leggings x1). It will be the new olive ones or the rust ones. First wear of the cardigan and it is also on the maybe list:)

Your style looks like it is best represented by 3, the olive crops outfit, and 8...the thrifted wide crops and cardigan. Not sure about the last 2 items as you are not wearing them, but they look like they have potential.
You have a different body type and probably different personality than the blogger. If the trench were black or red, it may have more "boldness" or maybe your outfit with metallic or printed booties.

By the white dress, do you mean the white floral dress second from the end? I like the pattern but I’d have to see it on :)

I love the leopard/culottes combo. Are you going to take that O/S? Great palette on you. Also the new olive patterned skirt is fab. They are my faves.

Re: the trench. It has a different neckline from the trench in the blogger photo. I think the more open neckline of the blogger makes it easier to show the underlayers. Plus she has her hands in her pockets. Guaranteed to add insouciance. You had better go practise that pose.

Yes it is just above my knee..... It "suits" me - it is a little too big but the pushy manager at the hospice recycled shop was very very keen that I buy it.

The trench is a good fit and can be buttoned. I just always feel skewiff in it.

Love the culottes. The trench looks fine to me in the pics... can you button it? Is it narrow in the shoulders?

The dress doesn’t wow me, have to be honest... I feel longer hems are more au courant...

Hi All

It is early autumn here - last week it was still hot (for us- 25 degrees C with nights in the teens) - this week cold overnight but warm during the day (23 degrees C). Suddenly the sandals are not appealing any more.

I have added a few new additions over the last ten days - and also started wearing a January addition for the first time.

I will put them into finds but they are all thrifted or by my designer friend. The older pieces have finds but not the three new thrifted items (highlighted) nor the pieces by my friend.

Blogger copy cat (Signe from Useless). I wore this for some weekend work visiting a client and dropping off helicopter kit.

New skirt made by friend - worn for Prizegiving with old olive jacket (five years) and blue tee (four years).

New olive wide leg crops. Useful and casual for upcoming trip and weekend wear. Made by my friend. Worn with five year old blush top.

Existing dress - repeat. Purchased early summer.

A line skirt - 11 years old!! Worn with tee and sandals from this season.

New thifted blouse - a true completer piece. Worn once already. It works with a couple of jackets and solo

Instagram inspiration photo for 5. This is Signe - she has a simple edgy style that I do like - and I enjoy her youtube channel.

Culottes and cardigan thrifted in January. Same old Mary Jane shoes from 2009. Worn to a work celebration lunch. Sorry about the coy pose - this was taken today in a rush.

Same jeans and coat as 1. Blouse from two years ago and shoes from ten years ago. Worn to meet teachers at school. I didn't particularly like this outfit but I received a few compliments.

New to me dress - thrifted. Not sure about this one....may be a donation to Hospice!!

Recycle boutique (consignment) Trelise Cooper Skirt - from recycle boutique. Love this and will wear with simple black tee and sandals, or my white oxfords. Fun colour mix. Quite a statement.

A few questions:

Which of these best fit my bold, relaxed elegance style goals?

Does the white dress look like it might work - I am putting it aside til next summer and will evaluate then. I wonder if it is too Sally in 2010 for me? But Sally in 2010 was okay......

Why does my pseudo trench coat not sit right on me - how do others look good when layering?

We are off on our Italian adventure in a couple of days - I will update my packing list before we leave as whilst it has not changed markedly there have been some additions and subtractions.

Thanks in advance.
Sally
