Thanks everyone! I was so swept up in my happy nostalgia that reading the articles--especially the snarky one--felt like a jab. Glad I'm not completely off the mark in finding those looks flattering and classic!

Emily K., you are right too that their looks were also about their personalities and not always indicative of mainstream fashion.

:) Your comments were very comforting!

I take these kinds of articles with a huge dose of perspective. They are written by one person. Sometimes that is a thoughtful person with something enduring to say and an opinion worth listening to, but I suspect that most times these articles come from a pitch meeting where people suggest catchy angles that will fill the space in a magazine or website that MUST be filled by something.

In other words, I try not to let space-filler articles shape my opinions or tastes more than they deserve to.

"Lorelai definitely learned from the Ally McBeal School of Professional Dress. The skirt had to be short, the shoes chunky, and that jacket better be cut tight at the waist." Oh man--this was me! But not anymore. Actually, I don't think you'd find many people who'd acknowledge/believe that I ever dressed in this way.

I guess the worst things, for me personally, were the pony tails and everything Juicy Couture. But generally, I think the 00's didn't offer up much that was super-egregious. (Not like Hammer-pants, anyway!! 0_0 !) With regard to Lorelai's choices, I saw her as an iconoclast and thought that her wardrobe was highly personalized--not a sign of the times.

Seems conventional to me, the styling. Quite unchanged from before or after the time period. Nice then, nice now.

Funny enough, I have a purple dress kinda like the one. I’ve never worn it, tho. The occasions for it stopped as soon as I got it!

It's part of most fashion writing to be mean I feel, especially in newspapers. They want to make an impression. All decades get ridiculed and reacted against, until they suddenly get revived about 30 years later and then they look "fresh" and are cool again. I would ignore the snark in those articles.
Also, if you were in your early 20s for those fashions, it's possible you'll love them for ever. It's like torontogirl says, your "rock star" years, and nothing wrong with that. For me it's why I'll always love the 80s.

Nah, I think the outfits you selected look good. You could wear them today. I mean maybe not if you're a fashion blogger. But then again that is a nostalgic time period for me as well.

I may be biased, because I loved that show when it aired. I loved Rory's look at this time (she was exactly my age!). Looking at screenshots now, I still like their looks but prefer Lorelai's - especially her dressier outfits for the dreaded Friday Night Dinners.

They wore many bootcuts that the young folks of today seem to hate - but I still love them and find them very flattering. Rory's outfit on photo #3 looks very nice to me.

And, just like you, I love the purple dress! It would be far too bodycon for me, but Lorelai wears it well.

Yep, I agree with Janet - even the scathing article references playing it safe more than once. I think what these articles show is that the 00s had a really strong emphasis on classic style. I don't think they could find quite content to be scathing about really! E.g., I agree that ultra-skinny scarves don't serve a purpose, but neither do pendant necklaces or neckerchiefs and those are stylish now. Accessories are commonly not strictly functional - how is that a good criticism??

But then again, the 2000s were my 'rock star years' (as my friend lovingly calls that time when you were young enough to still be cool, but old enough to be earning some money) ... so maybe I have nostalgia goggles on too!

Janet, I probably should have clarified that I didn't like or wear all the fashions from that time... no Juicy Couture or similar sweatpants, no shorts with Uggs, no shiny satin camisoles worn as tops... not now, not then! but then again every moment has its own extremes of good and bad fashion.

Ok, I’m old and never watched GG, but I agree 100% that Juicy-emblazoned backsides and Von Dutch trucker hats were horrible. But otherwise I really don’t think that was such an awful time for fashion.

Every decade has its extremes.

Maybe this is more of a sentimental post than a fashion one, but to me fashion is always about feeling, so here it goes.

I recently decided to watch Gilmore Girls from the start (I had only seen it sporadically when it was on). The first season is from Fall 2000, and I found myself in love with most of the outfits. I was in my mid-20s then, so those were my fashions too when I came of age.

With some wistful nostalgia I decided to google "Gilmore Girls fashion" and to my surprise I found a lot of disparaging reviews from recent years, along the lines of "what were we thinking in the early 2000s".

Now, I know it's normal to have poison eye for the fashions of an immediately preceding generation (in the 90s people hated tapered baggy pants... in the 2000s people hated grunge... in the 2010s people hated bootcuts and low waists... etc.), so I believe that part of the reviews are just a case of period-specific poison eye.

But it made me wonder: is there something timelessly or universally bad about those fashions? Does it mean I have bad taste if I still find those looks flattering and appealing? To be honest, I would still wear several of those styles and proportions from the early 2000s.

Curious to know what you all think...

Below are links to the articles. And also pictures of some of the outfits.

Articles: This one is the most scathing (also terribly written): http://observer.com/2016/11/gi.....-in-stars-

This is more mixed:
https://hellogiggles.com/fashi.....s-fashion/

PS. I love the purple dress in pics 2 and 4, but one of the reviewers dismissed it so meanly. What's so wrong about it?...
