This is such affirming advice for me and my eclectic, ever-evolving taste. And I definitely think it makes sense to apply home decor advice to wardrobe advice, because both are a reflection of the person living in the home/clothing! I've been having fun expressing myself in both areas and seeing where my taste in each overlaps.

I can see into the kitchen of the house next door. It was sold late last summer. They spent ages prepping it for sale, and it was staged very nicely. Now when I glance over I see the baby’s push-toy and breakfast’s cereal box and what not. It always crosses my mind that this is how a house looks when it’s lived in. And nice staging or not, it’s not nice having empty houses on the block.

Very interesting!!

I am very very picky when adding items to my house (to the extent that I often have big gaps for ages)........

Yes it is having the confidence to wear the big bold bracelet you bought on holiday and love rather than the delicate chain store jewelry that is trending....

Or keep the rustic coffee table when minimalist glass ones are everywhere...

Janet, yes - I'm the worst for trying to edit those bits out, but those are the best bits ... in decor terms, it's the difference between a real home and something in a catalogue (or perhaps style-wise, a real outfit and something from Instagram?)

Nemo, you and me both sister!! *high five*

LOVE this! Sheltering in place is the perfect, no-judgement setting to experiment with your clothes (and furniture!). I watched a video with Alexa Chung and Caroline DeMaigret a few months ago, and something Caroline said really resonated with me. She said (I am paraphrasing) as you go through life, you are influenced by your experiences - whether it's music, film, travel, whatever - that often comes through in what you choose to wear.

Edited to add: I need to figure out how to care less about what others think about what I wear... ;)

So much truth there.

I see photos of other people’s clean modern spaces and start questioning all of my decorating, but then I realize that despite my attraction to super modern minimalist style, I *like* the mixture of some disparate pieces in our home, including some antiques and inherited pieces. Figuring out how to combine pieces you love is an art in itself.

Yes Lisa - I think it future from a style perspective, when something doesn't fit my 'definition', my first question should be, is my definitely too small? I'm definitely guilty of 'curating' the fun and personality out of things ...

Great advice from both writers! It makes me think about how I approached the condo we moved into a year ago. I decided it was an opportunity to decorate from scratch , and to do it the way I wanted to. I bought a lot of new furniture and accessories and used a very modern palette. I now miss many of the old pieces I gave away when we moved as they were the things that added personality to a room and made my house mine , despite them being design "don'ts" .
