I used vinegar on the silk top and salt on the pants as recommended on the site. Maybe that is why I did not have the bleeding issues.

Great job! They look fantastic. I have just done a dye job on something but I am not yet sure how I feel about it lol. This is definitely something I have been thinking about.

Claire, I used a cup of salt. It was mentioned on the Rit site - see #13

Great job deb. I do the same as Kiwigirl -if I'm not wearing it anyway then I'll try dying it.

CC - salt (cooking salt is cheaper) will set the dye too.

Staysfit, I do not think a $3 bottle of dye goes against the September vow.

Claire, I washed these pants twice on hot water with old towels after dying them. When I washed them with my regular colored items they did not run. The silk top I dyed earlier in the year does on run either. They do have a color fixative. http://store.ritstudio.com/lau.....-fixative/

Deb, those came out really well! I love the dye chart that you linked to. It's a brilliant color tool for those of us that are into color analysis. All of the colors that would look good on me were cool colors with a bit of tan, taupe or grey in the recipe, which makes total sense since I'm a Soft Summer.

I have used Rit dye before, but I had trouble with the dye bleeding a lot whenever I washed it later. I think Astrid was able to get a product in Europe that sets the dye. Do you know if Rit has something like that? It would be great not to have to wash the dyed item by itself for the rest of its life. i have a couple of sweaters in my holding zone and it would be fun to dye them.

What a great idea! I am thinking that perhaps I can take some of the lighter colored jeans that are extras in my closet and change them to something interesting - maybe chocolate brown, or black. Very inspirational! I wonder if this has to wait for No Spend September to end?

I have done it, mostly on pieces where I had nothing to lose. I have been happy with the results. Sometimes stitching does not dye, so you can be left with contrasting stitches. This sometimes can look pretty cool!

Janet, Your pants came out great. If we keep this up we do not have to buy anything new, as if that will happen.

Congratulations! It's scary but not rocket science, right?

Just recently I dyed some linen pants. They were a weird pale green that I just couldn't figure out, so I dyed them navy. I did it on the stove top, too. They're pictured here:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....er-tonight

Now I'm considering dyeing a bulky cotton sweater navy. It's kind of beige now. Beige is no good now that my hair is silver, so I figure I have nothing to lose.

A couple of weeks ago I wore my dark red skinnies from last year after Angie posted about all the dark red coming out. When I went to throw them in the laundry I notice how worn they had become. The color was faded along the edges and seams but the rest of the fabric was in great shape. Initially I went on line looking for a new pair to no avail so I took matters into my own hands. I bought dye. First I went to the RIT dye chart to find the color I wanted. I decided to go darker and less pink. Got out a big pot and followed the RIT site for the stove top method and gave it a go. I am so happy with the way they turned out I dug the two Blue Essence pair, cobalt and dark teal, I had put in the purge bag and will give them a go also. Have any of you refreshed your old items? I now wish I had not given away the lime green Equipment silk shirt. The color was really not good on me and I could have changed that. Here is a link to the pdf file from RIT.
