One is to overcompensate with friendliness, politeness, and deference, which I see on a lot of female-dominated boards. The other option is to assume we are all big enough to take a message for its content and not read intent into it. I see this more on male-dominated boards. As you noted, sycophantism and insincerity is a pitfall of the first, while sounding callous and adversarial can be a problem the other way! An advantage of the first is feeling safe and cared for, but it can be at the expense of frankness (and more importantly, humour!) </p> <p>I find online behaviour fascinating and each forum I visit is like a little ethnographic study Like any community, working out the (tacit) rules is part of the experience.</p> <p>And yes, it makes me cautious about what I post. Or at least I feel like I come off sounding somehow different than I do IRL, with a tone I don't intend.
