Haha I just made up the term 'chameleon bust' but I think you get the idea It's frustrating being on the cusp of *everything* sometimes but eh, you only get one body - I may as well make peace with mine

Anyway, I got rid of a multicoloured breton striped top recently precisely because of the 'overgrown toddler' vibe - the forum assured me it did not look that way, but I just couldn't shake it. Not beating myself up about it too much though, since I couldn't have known I'd feel like that until I tried it. So in that vein, I support your 'trial & error' dungarees/ overalls/ coveralls/ whatever

Who knows, I may even join you in that endeavour - if I can find a pair of dungarees/ coveralls/ overalls with true waist definition

What a great thread! I thought I might not do them (overalls to me) except for the ancient pair of overall shorts that are paint-stained and that I keep around for... um, painting, and also my annual tomato-canning fest, which is very hot work.

However, I have to say thanks to kkards for links to those two blogs that I will now be sure to follow, and between those and the other posts here, I am suddenly very intrigued by a dark or black pair! Something chic about them! And I think all these women pull off all their various colors with great style.

Also wanted to chime in with another style icon's vote for them, Andrea Linnett. If you search "overalls" on her blog she's got lots of thoughts.
https://www.iwanttobeher.com/p.....-overalls/

Wow, I'm in the USA and I never knew that in parts of the world, "dungarees" refers to what I have always called overalls...and coveralls, or what we fashionably now call jumpsuits, have sleeves. Dungarees were what we used to call blue jeans back in the day, like in the 60's. I love learning this! And I think it can be a great look at any age, whatever we call them. Have fun with it!

Zaeobi,a chameleon bust !That s a new expression for me for sure.
Mirjanna, you certainly prove that age is just a number with y our own wonderful style.
Synne, yes l am very wary of the overgrown toddler vibe myself hence this thread but something keeps drawing me back to them so l think l will just try a pair on and see rather than keep speculating about them.

Some great looks in this thread!

I am "overall curious" myself, if I may phrase it like that I have never yet owned or wore a pair, but I like the aesthetic.

The ones I have tried on have made me feel like a flight mechanic, or a toddler. But I recognize some women can really make them look intentional and elegant. Like the examples presented over me here!

Zaeobi, thank you for commenting. It’s interesting that until l posted this l hadn’t thought about what makes dungarees wearable for some and not others.l hadn’t considered the dropped waist but you are right that dungarees are generally drop waisted. Ialso think having a large bust(which l don’t) can make the fit challenging.
Avecennia, your outfit sounds lovely!Do you have a photo?

Angie, you are right,Donna and Bonnie are leading the way in the dungaree wearing aren’t they.
RoseandJoan,yes l have ordered a pair!

A blue pair of denim overalls with a v-neck, not bib, and no hardware, is my favorite wardrobe item. I wore them yesterday to work, to important meetings, with 2 inch wine colored pumps, a breton top, a blazer jacket and a silk scarf and I’m almost 50!

Another 'dungarees' voter here (for the denim bib farmer style) - the mechanic's jumpsuit style are coveralls/ overalls to me.

I think dungarees are timeless depending on how you style them - e.g. I'm seeing a lot of classic support acts, even in these inspo photos (like striped tops).

If you're looking for conventional figure flattery, you could try rolling up the cuffs of dark wash, straight legged styles. Maybe unbuttoning one shoulder (for an asymmetrically dropped bib)? I unfortunately can't pull off dungarees myself though, due to the traditionally dropped waists (I need high waisted definition)

I agree with Jaime—Donna & Bonnie’s selfies are great!

JenniNZ, where I’m from, what you refer to as an overall is called a coverall, or a jumpsuit. The many explanations online to straighten all this out are funny, because they all that their little corner of the world has standard usage. Reminds me of the time I tried to correct a guy for saying I could call him “on” a certain number. He may have called me an imperialist….

Ha, I love that I instantly knew what dungarees are! Former British colony… to me overalls have sleeves and are mainly that blue all-in-one outfit that the mechanic might wear when fixing your car!
I can’t help though CG because I last wore anything like that in about 1973- they were short and called “hot pants” I believe. Shocking pink floral, I was 12 and loved them!
Somehow anything like that just feels wrong for me I like people’s inspiration pics though!

Whoa - case closed after the testimony from bonnie and DonnaF! My first thought was that I hope everyone realizes dungarees are overalls . (I am around enough Brits to know.) I have a specific memory of wearing them when I was a teen. I have not worn them since but would if the right pair came along.

I’m in my late 60s and own the two pairs of overalls below. I must confess that I feel more comfortable psychologically in the black versus the blue, but that’s the case for all blue jeans for me.

My oldest item of clothing is shortalls — (men’s) overalls that were cut off to shorts length. I’ve had them since I was a teenager and probably haven’t worn them in 50 years. That look, for me, is a bit too young. My 28 y.o. DD recently sported the look with a black turtleneck, black patterned tights, and tan booties. I am a bit embarrassed to say I could have copied the look (see below). Wish I could’ve taken a pic of her.

I like what Helena said -- there is a lightness about you that could mesh well with these and I can also see them working extremely well for your gardening life even if you decide you don't want to wear them into town. I've been considering a pair for myself for that purpose.
