What Angie says is true for hot and humid and tops... I am acclimated to hot and humid. I don't ever feel a real need for twice-a-day showers and a change of clothes. Not that acclimation is the final word - my born-in-the-West-Indies father always took morning and afternoon showers.

I would still bring only what I said, tho, because I am also a shopper. There ain't nowhere I'm going without coming back with more clothes, LOL>

Oh - and add 2 sleeveless woven tops to my list!

Angie's right, of course. I am not travelling in super hot weather where I would need a greater assortment of tops. Fortunately sleeveless and short sleeved tops pack down to almost nothing.

My bigger challenge is the colder weather. Those items take up more room. But as others have also said. you can re-wear the items more often, even tops, before doing laundry.

Mary, I haven't read the comments so pardon the repetition. You CANNOT re-wear a top in hot and humid weather. Sometimes you have to change twice a day. I know that neck of the woods well. The weather is relentless. Some areas have extremely cold a/c, and some areas are just as hot as it gets.

So, unless you can do laundry, rethink your hot and humid weather capsule.

For the cold weather, you can re-wear stuff at least a couple of times.

So exciting! You have received brilliant advice (much better than I can give...I am now planning on buying some packing cubes for my NEXT trip) but I will just tell you what I have stuffed in my one large bag for my almost 4 week trip from summer to almost-winter temperatures (China and Vancouver in November):

5 pairs of shoes! Yes, it sounds crazy, but I drove myself even crazier trying to cut down on the footwear and I will tell you I have already worn every single pair of shoes I brought and I am not sorry. This is the FIRST trip I have allowed myself so many types of footwear and it has been a godsend. I have a pair of pointy toed black flats for skirt wear and city walking, a pair of athletic Mary Janes for warm weather, skirts, walking heavy sightseeing, two pair of booties (black and light brown), and a pair of athletic sneakers in leather. I am SO grateful for these choices. Full stop. Worth every inch they are taking up.

Bottoms in the bag:

1 pair print cropped pants (wear with booties in cool weather/ flats in warmer weather)
1 pair skinnies
1 black jersey midi skirt
1 taupe jersey knee length skirt
1 pair of shorts (unworn so far)
1 below knee denim skirt

Toppers:

1 fuchsia knit jacket
1 black waxed denim moto
1 trench
1 rainproof anorak in pink
1 grey cardigan
1 striped cotton boatneck sailor sweater

Tops

1 pattern long sleeve
1 white button down
1 orchid button down
1 denim shirt

1 sleeveless black T neck modal
2 layering Ts (white, grey)
1 layering T-neck (fuchsia)
1 short sleeved striped top

2 scarves: leopard print, and your magic scarf (it's MAGIC!!)

4 layering tanks/ camis
1 athletic shirt that doubles as PJs
undies, including silk undies that double as PJs
leggings
tights
socks

Somehow I got it all in. I have worn almost everything already, one way or another (layered under/ over, etc.) And we are doing laundry.

Have a wonderful trip!!! And send us pics!

I second the tip about not taking the cat!!

What an exciting trip! I'm a very light packer - we did a three week holiday to New York (in July - hot and humid), Sydney (by then it was August - cooler, but bright) then up to Port Douglas (warm and sunny), and we had two large suitcases for the four of us.

I worked it out by thinking that I would wear layers in Sydney, so the tanks/sleeveless woven tops under the cardigans would be worn on their own in New York and Port Douglas. We had laundry facilities in both Sydney and Port Douglas, which really helped. Think hard about shoes, as they are heavy and take up lots of room.

I'm not averse to doing hand laundry so I do think that way, too. I also like tights, but maybe not control top, fine under lighter weight slacks for added warmth, rather than trying to have heavier pants.

Do you have an idea of how long you stay in each place? As in, are you moving every day, or do you stay 2-3 days in one hotel? That gives more time for drying.

I've not been a big skirt person because it puts me into shoes that aren't my favories for walking, but I can see that they can be much cooler than pants, especially since pants for hot weather need to be so light and cottony and better if loose, so by that time...skirt!

I love your post because I recently travelled, by plan, on just a short 3-day in U.S. and it really made me think which of my existing clothes worked well, or not, for a travel capsule without having to buy new clothes that are "travel" clothes. So I think you're doing great to be this far along for a major long/climate-challenging trip. I found that several simple rayon knit tops--neutrals and a bit of jewel tone--plus a scarf or 2 worked great. Trouble is, mine would be hot in a truly hot, humid setting because they were fitted. So while I agree that wovens can be more of a pain to pack, the right kind of woven tops--maybe collar-less, maybe a cotton blend--can work and be much cooler because of a breezier fit than even cotton knits that cling, and may dry faster than cotton knits.

Boy, I second the motion for salwar kameez!

After much traveling, I'd bring esp. for Asia:

- one knee length skirt
- one maxi skirt/dress
- one pair pants
- 1 short sleeve button shirt
- one short sleeve knit shirt/tee
- two long sleeve tees
- maybe, just maybe, a dressy blouse
- sweater
- coat
- block heeled flats, good for walking
- tennis shoes
- assorted socks/tights (for cold weather)/undies

And this includes what I'd wear on the plane. Even a 22" suitcase is such a giant pain, esp. when you are moving around from country to country. I'd wear things three times before washing.

Also, I don't care what anybody says about pants for traveling, I totally believe in skirts when it comes to rural pit stops and non-western toilets. Ohmigosh! Ser-i-ous-ly.

Oh, and don't forget the travel math formula:

(# of tops) x (# of bottoms) = total outfits

So 4 tops and 4 bottoms that match shoudl give you 16 outfit combinations, if all can be mixed around! Nothing should be a stand-alone item that can only be worn one way. And think about items that work multi-purpose. A cardi that can be worn on its own or over something can do double duty. A convertible jacket with zip-off sleeves is also useful. And I want all my travel items to have pockets.

TOTALLY agree on the longer skirt for modesty and bathroom issues.

As an aside, the salwar kameez outfit in India is so practical - it's cool for hot temps, it's modest, it can be used to cover your bare butt for a rural potty stop, the chuni (scarf) can be used for modesty as well as dust and sun protection... really a perfect travel outfit!

You have great advise here and I have nothing to add but would just be certain the shoe choices were extremely comfortable and able to get you through the day. I would worry less about style and make sure they were completely functional for walking and sight seeing for hours. Bring moleskin and band aides and Neosporin in case of blisters. (Can you tell I'm perinoid about foot pain and blisters). What a fantastic trip you have planned.

You know I'm a light packer... I'd wear everything at least 3 times except the hot weather tops if they got sweaty (and of course knickers). I'd use light washable (maybe silk or synthetic outdoor gear) underlayers in the cold weather to keep the top layers fresh. I always take a wrap.shawl for the plane and for cold weather. Since I don't check luggage it can be a challenge!

Great tips here. My one week trips in any weather have: 2 packed shoes and a third one on my feet for the plane. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the plane. 3 bottoms (jeans/trousers), again, one I am wearing so only two are packed. And one of these is not jeans in case I need them for dinner.

Additional items I pack, for warmer weather: I stick to dresses for evening and only bring 3, I wear each one twice (except one is worn 3 times). These can also serve as beach coverups if needed. Short sleeve tops, one for each day. A layering item, one blazer, worn on the plane. One cardigan (they mush better and pack easier). Scarves, get stuffed inside shoes and can also add warmth. One pair of shorts, I run cold and if the shorts get stained I can always just wear a dress on a hot day.

Additional items I pack, for colder weather: I still stick with dresses but I add fleece hose for warmth. (It's funny I rarely wear dresses for my day to day life, but for travel, they are great for packing). I also pack thermals in place of the shorts, to wear under jeans/trousers. I take 2 sweaters (they are bulky to pack) and long sleeve T's (one for each day). And I wear my outercoat AND blazer on the plane.

Also, I never trust checked baggage so in my carry-on is something to sleep in and something to change into the next day (just a top usually).

I travelled in rural Mexico as an undergraduate and was advised to bring a skirt to wear to churches and other important cultural places, so I packed one of those long cotton "broomstick" skirts that were all the rage in the mid-90s. Rather boho for your style but they were great for this purpose -- very lightweight, easily washed in a sink and dried overnight if necessary, long enough to look modest but made of breezy fabric so they weren't hot, nice enough to wear to a restaurant with a plain tee and some jewellery, and best of all, made to look wrinkled! I'd pack something like that again if I were going on a long trip in the tropics. Possibly with some leggings to wear underneath, so that it could be paired with a sweater and more substantial shoes for cooler weather.

Also a TMI tip: if I'm trying to pack really light and want to maximize the number of times I can wear a pair of trousers, especially in a warm climate, I use panty liners. It helps reduce funkiness from sweat.

My skirt was a bit like this: http://www.rustyzipper.com/full/217809.jpg

I really have gotten by with a very small capsule just as I described. I like washing things out as it avoids dirty laundry. Usually I could wear things more than once, except underwear and the shell when it was hot. I use my trench as a robe. I have a bad back, DH has a bad heart and can't lift/carry much, so there isn't much choice about packing light.
My niece wears long skirts a lot as her creative style, so it was natural for her. I saw group pictures of the trip ( reward for sales) and all the women were wearing similar dresses. She said she didn't see shorts and the natives really covered up. She thought it was partly protection from the sun.

When I travel, I leave the white/lights behind, esp. if they are solid. Prints are your friend. I wear stuff more times than I would at home, at least in cooler climes. Tops and esp. bras may not give you a fit in Japan, as um, I think you are curvier than the typical Asian, so make sure that luggage doesn't get lost!

Joy, thank you so much! I have been doing my research and I have also seen the information about modesty and respect, and that is part of why I am so tied up in knots about this. I don't feel like my fallback-for-the-tropics shorts and tanks are appropriate so I am flummoxed!

Do you really get by for 3 weeks with such a small capsule? Do you just hand wash every evening?

MaryK, my niece and her husband recently took a trip during hot weather to Vietnam and Thailand that was mostly by boat. They were told not to wear shorts as it was disrespectful of the culture. The women were encouraged to wear dresses, especially as some stops of interest had rather primative bathroom facilities (think hole-in-the-ground) and little privacy. She was glad for her long dresses that were respectful, breezy and allowed squatting without flashing. Just sayin'
I think she wore sleeveless tops but had a coverup handy. You will probably go to some temples.
I also read an article recently that gave me a new perspective on how we can be perceived because of our dress. It seems that people in many countries feel that we are showing them disrespect when we don't dress in our better clothes. They would dress in their best if meeting us. They wonder why we think so little of them when we wear jeans, shorts, and tees in their country.
About how much to take...we have often traveled in March when the weather can be hot or cold. For 2 weeks or more, I'd take 3 bottoms (although I've never really needed more than 2). They would be black ponte pants and a black knit a-line skirt. (Pick a dark neutral. They could be navy, charcoal, or chocolate). I might wear dark jeans on the plane.
For tops I'd plan to mix weights and layer when needed. I'd take one or two silk or knit sleeveless or short sleeved shells, one of which could be could be worn with the black skirt to make a LBD; 1 long sleeved knit top in a dark neutral, a cashmere cardigan (probably black) and three colorful scaves. If there was room or most of the trip were going to be cool, I'd add a knit jacket. I'd take silk long underwear (black) to layer if really cold and maybe to sleep in. Most pieces except for the cardi and jacket should be able to be washed in a sink, rolled in a towel, then hung to dry. Same with 3-4 pr. undies and an extra bra. Add to this a trench that is carried on the plane and an extra pair of comfortable flats other than the ones I'll wear for travel and that's it.
I use hotel shampoo for hand washing and take a minimum of toiletries.
We'd find it hard to travel without Eagle Creek packing folders
http://shop.eaglecreek.com/travel-organizers/l/211
(We use the 15" or 18" the most)
for most items and the cubes for underwear, although ziploc bags could be used.
I'm usually pretty sick of my clothes by the time I get home but having a light load is worth it, besides having some room for purchases. The scarves help change things up. I don't take jewelry other than earrings. I've often seen the advice to pack and then take half of it out. It actually works.

@ Shiny: my dad does this too! He brings old runners if he is planning on buying new ones and just pitches the old ones! He usually ends up keeping his suitcase though, because it's adorable red plaid!!!!! and he has promised to give it to me if he's ever done using it.

I also think you could leave the yellow jeans and if there are two button-ups, I'd replace those with long sleeve tee's for layering. Lighter and less wrinkly.

And, if you'll be on small commuter airplanes, it would be good to have a lightweight bag in case your carry on is deemed too big for the plane. On one of my trips I very carefully packed everything in one carry-on so I wouldn't have to lug a suitcase around or worry about it getting lost in transit. But on the way back from Venice my connecting flight was a small commuter plane that told me I would have to check the bag since normal carry on size was too big for their plane. Everything was in that bag! And it didn't make it back to the States for weeks. If I had had a small nylon bag to throw at least my toiletries and few basics in, it would've made life a lot easier.

Some more thoughts, after reading everyone else's thoughts...

What is the temperature differential? Are we talking summer vs Fall, or summer vs Winter? If the former, then layers may work best here, and you may want to add in more dresses rather than pants. A dress with sandals would work well in Vietnam. Then just add tights, socks, booties, cami or long sleeve underlayer, sweater, scarf, trench on top for colder weather in Japan. Bring dresses that you can wash and dry overnight, if you find it necessary. (Far easier to hand wash a dress, rather than jeans). Also, one dress is going to take up lots less room than a top + pants.

To Lyn & packing like a man: I had to chuckle because your story reminded me of DH's packing strategy. I doubt anyone in YLF will ever want to do this, but I will share anyway! Not only is he notorious for handwashing nearly EVERYTHING in the hotel every night, he packs all the items he was already planning to toss. Then he tosses them all before flying home, winding up with an empty suitcase, convenient for souvenirs. Once or twice, he even brought an old suitcase and tossed IT too. Talk about travel light!

To Gaylene: your anecdote reminded me of our trip to Japan around 5 years ago. We stayed with dear friends. The day we were leaving, our hostess insisted on doing all our laundry. We hung it all up to dry on the line; it was a beautiful sunny day. Then she suggested we go visit one last temple while the clothes were drying. We dashed across Kyoto to the temple, which was lovely, but we noticed these ominous dark clouds ... so we dashed back across Kyoto to her home... arriving as the heavens opened up and a deluge of rain soaked EVERYTHING! There was no time to run anything through the dryer as we'd miss our flight. So we packed all the sopping wet clothes in trash bags, and into our luggage. Talk about heavy luggage! UGH! And we arrived home after 18 hour flight... and yes, the clothes were all still wet when we unpacked!

For tops, most of what you need for the warm part of your trip could be an underlayer in your cool weather capsule. Shells for warm, cardigans over them for the cool.
When travelling, shoes are probably the most important part of any outfit, makes the difference between seeing one more thing you may never get to see again and heading back to the hotel because your feet hurt!

I'd cut back on the cold weather stuff before the hot weather. You can see much less of an outfit under a scarf/coat/jacket, and you can reuse them more often because you won't get them all sweaty. Plus, if needed, you can poach from your warm weather capsule for extra layers. I think you could drop two pairs of pants and perhaps one button-front from #1. Maybe drop one sandal from #2.

Also, it's not that bad to wash in the sink of a hotel room (I had to do this because the weather did not go as expected in Italy, essentially halving my wardrobe most of the trip). A little bit of Woolite or Dawn is good for delicates.

I just got back from my HK trip; and I will tell you that my favorite pieces got worn a lot more than the pieces I thought I should wear "just because I brought them" - which was weird because I only have favorite things in my closet! Then I realized that favorite things that were better suited for the new environment became my "norm" for every day wear.

I only brought 1 pair of jeans; but I only wore them once. I tried to wear my dresses, skirts and tops at least twice before I washed them, but if they were sweaty or such, I'd just hand wash them before my shower and hang them up to dry. I brought a tiny bottle of Woolite with me, and a Tide pen for touch ups. I found I didn't need an iron, because I hung up everything to dry.

I think I brought too much make up (I ended up tossing a lot of it because it melted in the heat) and next time, I would rely on buying things to make up the unanticipated wardrobe gaps. My dad does this all the time, and travels very light (he's an avid traveller), and you'd think I'd have learned this by now! He travels with his basics (dress shirt, few t-shirts, jeans, shorts, a pair of slacks) and then adds on what he needs. His rationale is that whatever fabrics you find there, the locals use, and therefore must be the best. :)

Have a lovely trip, MaryK!

Wow you've got some great advice! My tip for hot weather travel is to start with a fresh outfit at dinner each day. That way it will still be clean enough to wear the following day for sightseeing (with a change of shoes or accessories). If I wear a fresh outfit in the morning it's usually too crumpled and sweaty to wear again after I've showered for dinner. For cold weather travel, I always pack a cashmere sweater and a silk scarf. Both are so lightweight and very warm.
What a wonderful trip you have planned - I hope you will take some pics so we can tag along!

Just wanted to point out that if you take a pile of tops, bottoms, and undies, half way through the trip you will be hauling around half a suitcase of dirty laundry for the rest of your trip. On our first trip together, it was my husband who pointed that out to me and I've never forgotten that statement. Since I usually haul around my own luggage, it made me rethink what I wanted to put in it. Heavy bags are not fun when you are climbing stairs or dragging them along rough roads. A credit card (or cash) is very light and, in most cases, if I need something for a specific locale, it is readily available at that location. And it can make a great souvenir--"this old thing; I haggled for it at a stall when we were in Bolivia" LOL
