I have my hair colored an overall dark reddish brunette color, and my stylist says red coloring fades the quickest and recommends not shampooing & styling with heated tools every single day. She also says to go as long as possible before washing right after getting fresh color. I don't want to pay for that pretty color and then wash it all down the drain! So I've tried a couple of dry shampoos mainly to add volume, not so much to clean my scalp as I usually only want to skip one day between shampoos and I'm not particularly oily. I've not been impressed with the results and usually can't stand the strong odor. I prefer to shampoo every day (love the smell of clean hair!), and I always use products for color treated hair and wear hats when I'm outside in the summer.

Chris, that's great to know about the Aveda product. I might see if I can sample it since there is a store nearby. Thanks!

Shiny, you sound a lot like me. I am amazed that people can go *more* than every other day between washes - I'd be incredibly nasty by that point. In humid and warm weather - like this week - sometimes I'll get oily enough by the end of the day that I kind of want to wash my hair again if I'm going out somewhere... except that I'd have to wash it *again* the next morning. The dry shampoo (however poorly named the product is!) gives me just enough flexibility that I can look & feel decent and get by until the next day.

Part of my rationale for trying the dry shampoo is that in the winter or in dry weather, my skin turns very combination-y and I get dry, painful patches of eczema. For the most part this is contained on my hands, but shampooing daily is kind of hard on them, and occasionally I've developed patches on my face or scalp. I'd like to at least be able to extend washing my hair to every other day when I need to. I forgot to mention this issue earlier since my eczema isn't too bad at this time of year (i.e. I am able to manage it by applying thick lotion after my hands come into contact with soap.)

Laura N, I actually *am* going to be unemployed closer to the end of this month, but I'm not sure I'd have the courage to try going as long as I can between washes even if I'm not seeing anyone professionally!

Shiny - I completely understand where you're coming from. A few years ago I learned about not shampooing everyday (before that I assumed if you didn't, you had bad hygiene) and I wanted to try it out. I gave it a go probably 3 - 4 times but gave it up for the same reasons you listed.

I can thank unemployment for getting me to the point that I experience the difference. I was able to deal with being around friends even when I felt gross but a work environment can be difficult. I don't recommend quitting your job though =)

Count me in with the people who can't stand to go even one day without shampooing my hair! I guess I must have an oily scalp. Which shouldn't be surprising, considering how much my forehead shines in all my photos.

Well, it is true that, as I age, and in the winter especially, I can go a *little* further between shampoos - maybe two days, sometimes three if I push it - and as long as i re-wet/restyle, and my last shampoo was a double sudser (Critical!!!). And after any hair coloring, to ensure the color sticks, I do often go three days, even if it's dreadful to do so.

I have been told by stylists that you "just have to get over the initial stages" - that your hair and scalp will eventually adjust. But it just doesn't work. I have really, honestly given it my best shot here!!!! I just feel gross, my hair looks awful, eventually oil starts dripping into my scalp, I itch, etc.

I did try dry shampoo awhile back - I still have the sample, in fact. It sucked. My hair ended up looking like it was one of those powdered white wigs!! LOL. And I didn't use much at all. And worse: my scalp itched like the dickens....

My girlfriend can go an entire week without shampooing her long, thick hair. I have no idea how she does it, but she looks great even on day 7.

There is also a volumizing powder at Aveda that is great just for the purpose you describe Kari.
I have been skipping a wash here and there to be gentler on my color but with short hair do I at least have to wet hair and restyle.

Taylor - Oh yes I agree with you. Some people can't go without shampooing everyday. Just won't work for them. I made a generalization.

And we all agree that this dry "shampoo" needs a new name!

Being a stylist myself , I know that no cleansing is involved. The word *Shampoo* is very *misleading * for those they market this product to.

Shampooing everyday is needed by those who have oily scalps and skin. Most stylist *do* reccommend daily shampoo of that hair...you cleanse the body...you should also cleanse the scalp...more so if it is full of product... to say again,.... curly or dry hair has different needs.

Please don't take the name literally. =) Dry shampoo is NOT a substitute for shampoo.

It usually consists of talc or cornstarch that just absorbs oil. There is no cleaning involved.

Shampooing everyday is not recommended by most hair stylists. The idea behind dry shampoo is to help you transition to shampooing less often or freshen up on those non-shampoo days. Hope this helps!

Taylor, I agree that the name is misleading. I'm not wanting to use it as a subsitute for cleaning my hair, but more as something to allow me to wash my hair every other day on occasion. Does that make more sense?

If I skip a day of washing my hair, it lies flat on my head and I feel greasy even though it looks fine, and I can't stand the feeling of baby powder or corn starch that some people use as a "dry shampoo substitute". Also, on days when it's humid, I'd like something to prevent me from feeling greasy mid-day instead of having to wash my hair *twice*. I don't think that shampooing every day is the best thing for my hair - it's starting to look rather stripped and frizzy, and conditioner can help the ends a little but makes my hair really limp and heavy - and I liked how the Tigi "Dirty Secret" product allowed me to skip shampooing a couple of times a week without feeling icky. (I still showered & washed my face.)

A few people suggested trying the "no poo" or simply washing with water only every other day as a way to get to the point where I don't have to shampoo every day, but I just couldn't stand it.

I have also been reading and have to say, I would not consider using this under "normal" circumstances. I always interpreted dry shampoo as being something to use when you're going to be traveling for a long time, or out camping for a few days, or maybe you rolled out of bed late one day and didn't have time for a shower. It absorbs oil but your hair will still have dirt and sweat that still needs to be cleaned. I guess it's okay if it is used every other day or so, but I am still not sure why there is any preference for it. Is the main attraction related to color preservation? What is wrong with color-preserving shampoos and conditioners?

I just don't get this honestly...*You cannot clean your scalp without soap and water.* Putting a powder product to soak up the oil does not clean your scalp, and as Chewy said it will smell like *dirty* scalp.

If you are trying to extend or delay a day of shampooing fine, but for retailers to call this a dry *shampoo* is leading people to believe it is cleaning the scalp...just absurd.

Shampoo today is so highly concentrated and comes available for color treated hair, dry hair formulas etc.(curly hair has special needs and is in a different catagory) I am just baffled by this.

I have been reading this thread with interest. I've never tried any dry shampoo, but I did experiment with going poo free for a bit, as have friends. Honestly- it stinks! I mean, literally. There is a "scalp" smell that I can smell on people who don't use shampoo. Do the dry shampoos eliminate that?

I don't use the ShamPowder very often (maybe twice a month) so I've only bought it once. The applicator is a tube filled with powder and you shake it to get powder onto the brush. I like it because you can 'brush' your hair with it and place the powder more exactly.

Oh Chris, you are awesome! I actually just ran out of my remaining dry shampoo (or, actually, the sprayer leaked so I lost all of my remaining aerosol.) You are so sweet for remembering to check - thank you.

I haven't posted this on YLF yet, but I was testing out the Tigi Rockaholic "Dirty Secret" dry shampoo. I was waiting to see how it would hold up over time. Here's a synopsis of my experience with it.

Laura, I'm intrigued by the ShamPowder. The brush does sound like it would make the shampoo easier to apply than a spray. (I always felt like I had to cover up my glasses when spraying just in case it would leave a sticky residue.) How long does a tube of ShamPowder last you?

They are both on Amazon, so I may order both to give them a try. (We don't have a Sally Beauty Supply too close to where I live.)

Thanks Chris, Sarah, Laura, and Melody for your recommendations. Melody, I hope that you find one that works better for you too.

I missed the original conversation about dry shampoo, but am interested in dry shampoos because I want to preserve my dark hair color & shine between color appointments. So anyway, I've tried the Ojon Rubout cleanser shown in the link to the Sephora site. I can't stand the smell of it but still use it occasionally. Also, the reviews of that dry shampoo complain about the nozzle clogging up before it's all consumed. It's expensive so I shake that thing like a maniac everytime I use it (which is supposed to keep it from clogging)!

The Shampowder looks interesting ... I think I could deal with a vanilla scent all day. And the applicator looks easy to use. Thanks!

It is Batiste that they have at Sally Beauty Supply.
