My hair looks and feels horrible today after conditioner-only, but I think it's because of the quality of the conditioner and the outrageous amount of silicones. My hair shows classic signs of being damaged by silicones. It's very crunchy at the ends

I went ahead and got the Tresemme naturals shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo says it is lower in sulfates, but they are still the second and third ingredients on the list so it can't be that low. However, I need it in order to do a gradual conversion. For now I'm going to try shampooing my hair only every other day. The conditioner looks good. It's silicone free, smells good, and all the ingredients checked out for me.

I have heard advice both ways Sarah, and honestly, it makes no difference if I leave my hair a tad damp or dry all the way. It looks and feels the same. I choose not to in order to minimize the time my hair spends under heat. I am pretty good at blowdrying it because I have to be. If I don't blowdry my hair, or if I blowdry it incorrectly, it looks terrible.

Something else to consider... Partially drying hair with a hairdryer and leaving just a tad bit damp to air dry could be part of the problem. I'd dry all the way using a protective serum (and good brush, making sure to dry with the cuticles and not against htem) or air dry entirely.

Wow, that was very helpful Ele. Actually I did try the conditioner only method today but my hair just feels like straw with some sort of coating on it. And what did I use? Pantene. I always thought of silicones as being in hair product but not in shampoo or conditioner. How silly, I know.

I'm probably going to head over to CVS and pick this up. It looks like a good product. Mild detergents in small quantities, no silicones, and all the alcohol is fatty alcohol derived from the plant ingredients. It has isopropyl alcohol but it's so far down on the list. I think it's fine.

http://mikimu.blogspot.com/201.....ioner.html

Louise, you are too sweet. I will see how the conditioner-only routine goes first, but I might take you up on the offer

Maya, I agree with everyone else that the best thing you can do for dry hair is to stop using sulfates. They are horribly drying lathering agents, not put in products for cleansing but rather for that "sudsy clean" feeling that consumers like. When I stopped using them a few years ago, my hair became exponentially softer over the next three months or so.

You've got a lot of good advice regarding this, but I'll add my 0.02. There are two main ways to go sulfate free. 1) Use an organic shampoo that doesn't contain them (ie. sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate won't be in the ingredients list). 2) "Wash" your hair using a thin, cheap-ish conditioner and lots of friction. Products like WEN are basically souped-up versions of the latter, cleansing conditioners which contain no sulfates but are designed to be used like shampoo.

If you're going to try this, one of the most important things to remember is to stay away from silicones. Most silicones are not water soluble, so without using foaming sulfates to remove them, will build up in your hair, making it limp and dryer in the long term. Look for anything ending in "-cone" or "-xane" in the ingredients list. Certain brands like Pantene are notorious for using loads of silicones, and others like Suave have a lot of products without them. The good thing about conditioner washing is that the best products for it tend to be simpler and cheaper.

You might find that you still want to use a sulfate shampoo once or twice a week to deep-clean, especially as you get used to this. Sodium laureth sulfate is less harsh than sodium lauryl sulfate, so maybe look for a mild shampoo with that in the ingredients list.

The conditioner-only trick fascinates me. I'm going to try that first.

That's a lot of great suggestions. I'll try one at a time and see how it goes (I don't want to go overboard and make my hair greasy...).

I also use conditioner instead of shampoo on a daily basis. I shampoo about once every week or two. It's made a big difference. I also sometimes use a smoothing serum especially in the winter when it's dry.

When my (rather thin and straight) hair is dry, which happens a lot because it's so dry in AZ, I use Pantene's beautiful lengths split-end prevention leave-in cream. I don't have long hair anymore, or a lot of split ends, but this stuff is basically a leave-in conditioner that I apply when my hair is damp. I think they have similar products specifically for dry hair, as well as moisture renewal shampoo and conditioner. I'm a big fan of Pantene products because they work really well without being too expensive.

I'm also a big fan of http://www.hairthursday.com/, and you might find some good info there. I know she talked about Moroccan oil a little while back...

GOOD LUCK!

WEN is almost like April's suggestion, too. I've used it and like it, but don't currently use it.

I love my Shu Uemura Absolue Oil, but it is really pricey. That said, it is lasting forever. Morrocan Oil is very similar. I know the latter has silicone, I think the Shu prob does, too, though.

Kerastase masks are amazing. Again, expensive. I think the Neutrogena ones are really similar. I would try those.

Due to my recent hair color debacle, I have been washing my hair with Dawn dishwashing soap, which is horribly drying on my hair. To counteract that I bought Aveda's Damage Remedy Restructuring Conditioner, and I cannot speak more highly about it. It has saved my hair from being dry. As soon as I put it on my hair, everything feels soft and silky.

I think the no shampoo idea is a great one as well, and I know that a lot of people follow that method. Another idea is to get some kind of hair cream to protect your hair from the heat--you would put it in your hair prior to blow drying it.

April is right about using just conditioner as you would shampoo. I wouldn't have believed it until I tried it myself. I have been washing my hair with just conditioner for the last 6 months or so. My hair/scalp is actually less oily and the ends are never dry. My hair's texture has never looked or felt better. I buy whatever conditioner is on sale at Target; Suave, Herbal Essence, whatever.

I am a WEN devotee....I had 'normal' hair for yrs, then it got frizzy and dry beyond belief (I think from all the meds I am on) tried darn near every product going- both salon and drugstore- and WEN almost overnight changed my hair to smooth and silky. They have several types and if you order from QVC they have a 30 day money-back guarantee! They are a little pricey, but last a long, long time....

Maya, I went through a hair-like-straw phase a few years ago and here's how I got it back on track: I stopped using sulfate shampoos, started doing condition-wash-condition (you put conditioner on the length, then shampoo and condition) and doing weekly deep condition treatments.

I have to wash my hair everyday, so I thought it was hopeless- but doing the above totally turned it around for me. I got the CWC idea from the ladies at the Long Hair Community forum, and while I have no interest in waist length hair, they have a lot of great suggestions.

Good luck. BTW, your hair always looks gorgeous in your photos.

My hair went rather dry after colouring I use it daily after washing, has got rid of frizzys and no split ends even though I'm in need of a haircut and my hair feels lovely and smooth and undry! It is expensive but lasts ages as you only need the teeniest amount x

Maya, have you tried "shampooing" daily with just a light conditioner and no actual shampoo, reserving shampoo for use only once or twice a week? The conditioner carries away dirt and oil but doesn't strip your hair the way shampoo does.

And/or try a sulfate-free shampoo.

I noticed that I love how my hair feels immediately after I blowdry it, while it's still ever so slightly damp. Then when it dries completely, it feels (and looks) much worse, especially at the ends. That makes me think I might have dry hair. I'm running out of shampoo so I need to restock anyway but I'm not sure what to try next. I guess the obvious solution would be to stop blowdrying my hair, but that would look awful. I also read that I should wash my hair less, but my hair looks, feels, and sometimes smells bad if I don't wash it
