Well, in any case your other clothes are safe from that dry cleaner now!

Update!

Well, I didn't quite expect the response I got at the dry cleaners. It went something like this:

Me: "I picked up this cardigan on Saturday and it has a few new holes in it"
(Show manager cardigan).

Mgr: "These are definitely moth holes."
Me: "But, it's a new cardigan, worn once, and there weren't any holes when I dropped it off."
Mgr: "No, I know moth holes and these are definitely moth holes."
Me: "You don't think it could have snagged on another item."
Mgr: "No, moth holes. Moth balls smell but you should use them."
Me: "But the sweater is only a month old. None of my other clothes have holes in them."
Mgr: "These are moth holes. If you like, I'll refund your cleaning fee."

Seriously unprofessional. I was one question short of asking "are there moth's in your facility?" but thanked her for her time and left.

It's an expensive loss for me, but will be more expensive for them as most of my work wear asks for dry cleaning, and I'm taking my business elsewhere from now on.

Holes after a dry-clean? Sounds unacceptable to me. I really hope the dry cleaners will take responsibility for this. Good luck!
If you do decide to switch to handwashing, see if you can track down some of the washing soaps that are specifically meant for fabrics like cashmere. A hand-wash with something like that would likely work perfectly.
Also, feel free to enlist our help as you expand your colour palette!

I have an old washing machine so I do not trust my wool clothes to it. I wash by hand (I know, stone age!) in lukewarm water with a bit of shampoo. Just let it soak, then gently rub the spots which get dirty - armpits, neck, sleeves. Then rinse with the same temperature water, wrap into a towel and gently squeeze (not twist or wring). Then lay it flat to dry on the towels. It may sound like a tedious process but it is really quick.

The cleaners must have put them in with something that caught on things (like a zippered or studded item)...that is their fault for not being more careful with your knitwear.

FWIW I usually wash mine on delicate with some Woolite and lay them between two towels to dry (which the cat likes to sit on - I like to think it's sort of like a dryer....LOL). But it kind of depends on the fabric. If it's just normal knit wool with a little spandex I say go for it.

Sveta, how do you wash your wool clothes (and dry them)? Maybe I should switch!

I've had great luck with having my wool sweaters dry cleaned in the past (and they all say dry clean on them), but I guess there's more risk than I anticipated. I only wish this had happened with one of my black cardigans (which have lasted for several years).

That's too bad! I hope either dry cleaners or BR will refund you for it. I always wash my wool clothes and never dry clean them: I read somewhere that dry cleaning is not good for fine wool at all.

Oh no!!! I would definitely call and speak with the mgr, and then the owner if you dont get satisfaction from the mgr.... I try to examine my items before I leave the premises...its much harder to prove once you've had it at home. Good luck and keep us informed

:( Oh noes; does the cleaners have a policy to cover this kind of stuff?

Mine usually warns me that there is no guarentee for certain types of clothes before they wash it and ask if Id like to take the risk. If they didn't warn you; I hope they do replace it!

So I have been in a black/brown color rut for some time and after spending some time on here, am making active efforts to expand my color palette. I'm sad to say that my relatively new BR favorite bright watermelon only-worn-once wool cardigan has come back from the dry cleaners with many holes.

Fingers crossed the cleaners will offer to replace it. . . I'm hoping not to have to branch out from my SYC-except-for-accessories plan for this year.
