I've washed leather garments for years without problems, sometimes even in my front load washing machine. The trick is to use a short wash in cool water with just a small amount of low sudsing gentle detergent (I use a product called Soak which is what I use for washing cashmere and my lingerie)--or even a detergent made especially for leather (yes, there is such a thing: http://reviews.smartpakequine......eviews.htm). If you are hand washing, roll the garment in a towel to get rid of extra moisture but use an old towel because of possible color bleed. Once the garment is semi-dry, use a leather conditioner to keep the leather supple.

I've heard of people who actually partially dry leather bags and garments in a dryer just until the lining feels dryish, but I've always just stayed with air drying.

I'd actually be more leery of dry cleaning and using a product like Dryel because of the chemical nature of the process. Water and a mild soap has been the standard way to clean leather for centuries so, to my mind, it makes more sense. But I'll stick to my commercial leather conditioner instead of reverting to something like bear grease or fish oils that might have been used in the last century!

I have spent a lot of time rehabbing vintage Coach bags and had the nerve to wash many. I had some good results but always conditioned the leather after and let them air dry. The problem you need to look out for is color bleed. If the color is dark this may be an issue.....especially if it is sewn into denim and a different color. Those were the types of issues I encountered. ( with suede especially)

Leather in the dryer is a no no. The leather has the possibility of deforming/ shrinking and drying out.

I would just worry about the dampness on the leather. Maybe stick them in a giant freezer bag?

IK, I thought about that too! I always that it was a little bit nuts but I might try that with these jeans.

There's a whole school of thought about never washing jeans, just putting them in the freezer. (!) I suppose you could try that?

You've said they're perfect, so keep! Really, how often would you wash them anyway? I don't buy tops anymore that are dry clean only, but pants, sure. And perfect ones?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably dryel and spot clean them between dry cleanings. Just thinking about the way I wear my current (well worn and well loved) black jeans, I only wear them for a few hours at a time and take them off as soon as I get home. I really don't launder them very often because I don't let them get very dirty. I am leaning towards keeping because they are just perfect in every other way!

Look, they can recommend dry cleaning if they want, but you can bet that most people will just spot clean the fabric parts and febreeze the crotch! At least that is what I would do.

That's ridiculous. I've heard you shouldn't dry clean designer denim, either. I think my Paige jeans specify no dry cleaning even. Sounds like a no-win situation.

Agree with Raisin and Rae. I is the leather.

Makes me wonder how leather was cleaned before dry cleaning as leather is definitely older than dry cleaning.

Yeah, it's the leather. How hard are you on your denim? If you don't need to wash often, it could still be worth it. I suppose it is almost like having leather pants that way. :T

Well that's because of the leather. And you'll need a dry cleaner that specializes in leather, or is willing to do it. I have a few pants that have very small leather trims and I have washed them in the washing machine on gentle with my other dry clean items. So far so good. I don't know how that much leather would fare. Don't put them in the dryer though!

Who ever heard of such a crazy thing? Isn't that the opposite of the idea of the easy wear utility jeans - not that all of our jeans do that these days, but still! I just ordered a pair of current/elliot jeans with a leather stripe down the sides. They are amazing, fit perfectly and are exactly what I thought I wanted. But they are dry clean only!? I am torn! I don't know if I can deal with this kind of maintenance on a pair of jeans.

Here are the jeans: http://www.shopbop.com/high-wa.....orId=19702

They aren't "ankle" length on me. They fit just perfectly.
