This is so thorough, Laura; I admire your persistence!

I’ve been wearing either Clinique (I think it’s the Even Better formula) or Blendable Blur from Thrive cosmetics. I have several of their products and they work well for me. I like their business model so I’m happy to support them.

I am looking for a good under eye concealer. Do you have a recommendation?

Laura, that is so funny because I think we are at an exact intersection. Is it the MUFE Ultra HD one? I wear that one too.

Glad these are helpful. I’m taking notes for my next round of tries.

I’m pretty sure I’m sensitive to titanium dioxide, so I’ve always guessed that’s what breaks me out in a lot of foundations. Sadly it’s in basically all makeup, so all I can do is try things and see what works. I’m not opposed to paying more for a high end foundation but I haven’t found any that are perfect yet (I’ve got a MUFE one that’s not bad), but since 75% of all foundations break me out I’m reluctant to spend the money until I know something will work.

Anna - the Chanel CC cream is lovely. Gives the finish you describe looking for. Not cheap, but not completely outrageous either, given that a tube lasted me quite a long time.

Thanks for the reviews. I’ve been looking for a more sheer dewy coverage. Been using Amore Pacific & Laniege, but they ain’t cheap
I guess I should clarify, want light weight to medium coverage, but not matte.
I was at a drugstore last night & looked briefly, but I was tired & gave up

L'Oreal foundations have always worked extremely well for me -- sorry it didn't work out for you! I wore the TrueMatch you tried for years, then switched over to the TrueMatch Lumi when that came out (mixes moisturizer with foundation inside the bottle). Then recently switched to the 24 Hour Fresh Wear in the shade Rose Ivory. I really like this one, but it needs a sponge to blend and doesn't blend very well with the fingers.

I also very much like the L'Oreal True Match blush! Very subtle and perfect shade for me.

For summer I've switched over to Shiseido sunscreen in the blue bottle -- my skin loves this stuff (one of the only high SPF face products that doesn't break me out) but it does give me a white cast. I then layer over a couple of drops of Clarins UV Plus, which is tinted so takes away the cast and evens out my skin tone. I like that product (better than IT CC cream) but boy does it have a horrible fragrance.

Great reviews! I love trying different products. Another one to try is Boujois BB cream. It's a new one for me and and I love it. Just enough coverage for day and for a night out I'll put a primer under it and it does the job nicely.

I'm not sure if you have tried it but I am loving Almay Healthy Glow™ Makeup + Gradual Self Tan. It only comes in two shades but it has a nice feel and the smell isn't overwhelming. My daughter and I do couponing as a hobby and CVS often has great deals on Almay so I bought it on a whim and have been so happy with it. It gives me such a nice color and I enjoy it every time I put it on.

Another favorite is Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow. I really love the way it looks and feels.

I love your makeup and skincare reviews and look forward to them.

I gave up on drugstore foundations along time ago as I was spending more money in the hunt for a good colour match than it would have cost me to buy a more expensive foundation so like Lisa I stick with a more spendy one now(Lancôme) as it does a great match for my skin tone But will happily buy other drug store makeup .I admire your persistence and hope that you find something that suits you soon.

Laura and Sterling, I'm right with you on the breakouts and sensitive skin thing. I would have thought that by now (I'm turning 49 very soon), that would be over, but nope. But nothing says not old like pimples, right? Har har har.

Sterling, have you tried the Maybelline Fit Me foundations? I typically buy dept. store foundations, but Maybelline really surprised me with these as the color range is excellent and the coverage is quite good. I often use the concealer as a foundation by covering all my spots first then patting some out thinly over uneven areas. It isn't going to replace my Kat von D concealer, but it is a great inexpensive and massively available option for those times when I need some emergency coverage and have forgotten my normal stuff. .

I was especially fascinated by how many of them caused breakouts. That is the bane of my existence. So many products cause breakouts. Do you think it is because we have sensitive skin? You are braver than me. I am always so afraid to try new products for fear.

You may want to check Etsy too, that's where I found mine (All Natural Face). They will send you samples of the colors for a few dollars, instead of committing to a bottle. I think ANF sent me like 40 samples, and that was just the medium-dark range!

I've moved over to a cream foundation (Maskcara makeup) , and won't look back now. Applied with a brush . I still use my Chanel CC cream, but won't be repurchasing. Drug store foundations have NEVER worked for me, and I've decided it's worth it to spend the extra money getting a product I can rely on.

I've been looking for a new drugstore-priced foundation for a few months; I'm starting to think the search for the Holy Grail was shorter and more successful. I thought y'all might find some of these reviews helpful.

First, an almost-review of the Missha BB cream, because I got a sample sachet of it in my most recent order, which was only enough to try it two days. They sent me shade 23, which was too dark; I’m usually a 21 in Asian foundations, sometimes a 13 (no, I don’t understand their numbering system either). I liked the consistency and the staying power though; it reminded me a lot of the Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer that used to be my go-to for ‘slap on some stuff and run out the door’ days. I’ll definitely consider buying this in 21 next time Missha has a sale.

Nope:
Elf flawless finish foundation, snow [frosted glass bottle w/ pump, no SPF, 20mL, ~$6]
This is a medium-coverage that dries down to a satin matte. I really liked how it looked but it broke me out big-time. :(

Hard Candy glamoflauge foundation, 1501 ultra light [glass bottle with wand, 20mL, no SPF, ~$6]
Close to full coverage with a slightly glowy finish. But it broke me out.

L’oreal True match [glass bottle, no pump or wand, 30 mL, SPF 17, ~$10]
I think it was Angie @ Hot and Flashy that loves this so I gave it a try. Oh dear lord it was horrible on me. It’s very liquid and didn’t spread evenly, and I had a hard time getting it to even out. It made my skin look diseased, seriously. There is obviously something in my body chemistry or my skincare routine that doesn’t work with this formulation at all. I usually try things a couple of times at least but this went to donation after one attempt. I will applaud them for their extremely wide shade range.

Meh:
CYO Lifeproof foundation, 101, 102, 104 [plastic bottle with airless pump, no SPF, 30 mL, $6-7]
This was a saga to get ahold of, my friends. CYO is a line made by Boots, the UK drugstore chain, which also owns Walgreens (or maybe Walgreens owns Boots?). In any case, you can only get it at Walgreens in the US; my local stores don’t carry it in store, and my closest two shades (102 and 104, 103 is apparently quite warm-toned) have been unavailable for literally months online. Every time I thought I might get a chance to pick it up, another YouTube beauty guru did a review and it disappeared again. I finally did a ‘ship-to-store’ on the lightest shade, 101, because I could get my hands on it. 101 is a little too light for me, and has almost a grayish tinge to it. The foundation comes in a plastic bottle with an airless pump, and is priced at only $6, which I think is one of the reasons it’s gotten so much buzz.
Anyway, I tried that shade and it didn’t seem to break me out and it was nice enough, but I couldn’t really give it a full-day test when the color was off. I was traveling, looked online, and found a Walgreens that supposedly had shade 104 in stock. I headed there and to my joy, found that they had 102 as well. 102 is definitely my closest shade, although it’s quite neutral with no pink in it at all. Then, after all this anticipation and the effort of trying to get these shades…I just didn’t fall in love with it as a foundation.
It's got a typical silicone-y feel, fairly liquid, and spreads easily. I’d call the finish natural to dewy. (Right before I posted this I read that Boots is discontinuing CYO completely, the whole line - seems quick since they just launched it last year, but hey. So if you want to try this, get your hands on a bottle ASAP.)

Physician’s Formula healthy foundation, LC1 [glass bottle with wand, SPF 20, 30 mL, ~$12]
This was another YTer rec and I do like it a fair bit. The color range is pitiful, something like 5 shades, but the lightest one is OK on me. You can get a nice natural-looking medium coverage without a lot of fuss.

Flower Beauty light illusion, L1 [glass bottle with pump, no SPF, 30 mL, ~$14] (Walmart & Ulta)
I like the finish of this one, dewy but not greasy. It breaks me out - just a tad, not horribly - and the shade was a bit dark for me earlier this year. They're supposed to have come out with a new lighter shade L0 but I haven't tried it yet.

The winner, for now:
Revlon PhotoReady Candid, 130 Ivory [plastic tube w/ pump, no SPF, ~$10]
As this comes in a tube I was expecting something lighter-weight, but applied with fingers or brush this goes on quite full coverage. In some ways it reminds me of the IT Cosmetics CC cream. I've had success mixing it with a mineral sunscreen to get a tinted moisturizer effect, or applying with a wet sponge for a medium coverage. The finish can look cakey if I don't apply it just perfectly, so that's why it's not a "yay, I adore it" quite yet.
