Angie, if I still had them, I would totally share! I thought back on my drop shoulder tops over the years, and some were actually good or beloved. And for me, it was a lot of factors like, fabric, drape, width/depth of the drop-shoulder, and how wide the sleeves were. Oh, and how boxy and cropped the torso is. So you're right: it's more than just the drop shoulder. :} I have avoided the shoulder for some time but these new sweaters made me rethink my aversion!

Jaime, I should try to find an example!

Brooklyn, you nailed it! I'm thinking back over the years. Anything with a really wide, unshaped torso and wide sleeves has made me grimace when I wore or tried them on. I don't know if width is my friend...

Carol, that's another good point! The fabric and style are another factor. I have not typically done well with super casual tees/tops *unless* there is some zing, such as a band tee.

Lulu, originally the designer designed and styled it to wear off the shoulder. My issue is, I got a size to allow the off-shoulder look. However, I was just drowning in fabric. I sized down and I'm much happier with it.

Lise, thank you so dearly for your compliments!! You made my day! <3 I really love the sweater and I'm glad you agree! I agree that the fabric is the key. It's knit in Half Fisherman's Rib. And the details on it are tailored and high end. The side vents all have finished stockinette hemming, and the hem and neckline are well finished. It's a very well designed and well made garment. It has me itching to try knitting my own version of it. :}

So many good thoughts, everyone! Thank you so much. I knew you would all have wisdom and insight.

Aquamarine, now we know :)

Julie, that is a good point about shoulder line.

Star (Lise) oh thank you! <3 I absolutely love this top and glad you do too.. In fact, I love it so much that I duplicated it lol! I found it in a soft black. I'm curious to try layering with it in the fall/winter too.

Suz and Irina, oooo! I think you're both very right! And to be fair, I kind of wondered if it's a case of all the elements--not just the drop shoulder itself. The ones I've tried have usually been bulkier material with wider sleeves, Irina. And Suz, yes, the the necklines have typically been higher. Though, my rock band sweatshirts have crew necks and I love them. I think it's the soft, lightweight fleece fabric and how they drape and skim?

Lisa, good point too! I'm envisioning the drop-shoulder Norwegian type sweaters from the 80s and 90s with super wide sleeves and very deep shoulder drops. Lots of bulk and width.

LULU although not usually a fan of dropped shoulders for myself this top looks spectacular on Ket, especially when off the shoulder imo. She is understandably happy with this one. Like you I also think the secret may be in the fabric type.

It’s not you, it’s the sweater. It’s not meant to be worn off the shoulder for you. That is why picture 2 is so much better. It’s balanced where as picture 1 looks somewhat awkward and you. Different materials and necklines drape differently.

Maybe they were working, but you weren't used to it. A quick glance across the Internet suggest a lot of long-sleeved drop-shoulder tops are sweaters or jersey tees. And they have a very casual, almost tomboyish look. Maybe it's an attitude thing? Maybe if you wear them like your oversized band tees.

I wonder if your bare arms or blouse layered under the drop shoulder provides structure. Whereas dropped shoulder with loose long sleeves is a very unstructured look. Have you tried pushing up the sleeves of the long sleeve sweater to see if you like it better?

I'd like to see you in a dropped shoulder top that you don't think works on you, Ket. Then I can answer your question, accurately - or provide a link if you can.

FWIW, I haven't seen the right top with dropped shoulders fail on anyone yet! As Suz mentioned, there are MANY variables at play. Fit, silhouette, fabric and proportions. And they ALL need to work with the wearer to create a fab look.

I'm willing to bet that a top may not work because of other reasons - and not because of the dropped shoulders!

I’m broad shouldered and how dropped the shoulders are make a big difference for me. I haven’t figured out that sweet spot yet, it’s always hit or miss.

Maybe a long sleeve version adds bulk if sleeves are wide? Also, there might be a lack of structure. With short sleeves and more fitted sleeves in #2, there is a balance to my eye, between slouchy and streamlined.

I love questions like this! It's all about the proportions, right? And possibly fabrication, as well. But this reminds me of our straight leg vs. tapered and tapered pencil vs. straight pencil skirt conversation.

I like this top on you -- it is easy. The fit glides.

I don't have an absolute answer. But I suspect it relates to what Julie said, above, combined, perhaps, with other fit elements of the other drop-shoulder sweaters you've tried.

For instance, neckline. This one has a very open neckline. Were those other sweaters higher or snugger in the neckline? That would change the effect completely.

Drop shoulders with a very open neckline will not work on me, whereas those with a neater or more closed neckline are much more promising. I can do a drop shoulder boatneck (if the fit is neat) or a mock neck, or a shirt collar or similar. But if the neckline is as open as this it will always look sloppy on me. (So perhaps the opposite of you.)

It may also just be a question of structure, i.e. showing some skin and bone. In this style, we see your arms and neckline clearly and that adds structure to the ease.

I don't like drop shoulders with long sleeves either, I think because I have broad/straight shoulders. (I like raglan sleeves which break up that long straight line from shoulder to shoulder). Not sure about the answer to your question but I will be following to see what the experts say!

Angie and tribe:

I’m trying to hone my style knowledge.

A lot of drop shoulder tops haven’t worked for me, especially with long sleeves. This shoulder is pretty common construction for sweater shirts, long sleeve tops/tees, and sweaters. I have some rock band sweatshirts that work with styling fine. And a handknit sweater with a diagonal shoulder line to create the drop sleeve. But otherwise, drop shoulder is not special or terrific on me.

However… I recently purchased two summer sweaters. They’re essentially a longer drop sleeve shoulder with no long sleeve. Or could be a very modified dolman? (There is some corner under the arm, versus sharp angles.) The sweaters’ torsos possess no waist shaping. They’re literally boxes. But somehow, they’re magical and I adore them. A first for drop shoulder tops!

I feel I’m missing something.

What makes this drop shoulder work while a typical drop shoulder sweater with sleeves fails me?

Is it the line that the short sleeve creates?
Longer torso length?
Fluid ease? (Photo examples are a good 12-15” positive ease.)

Would love some insights. Thank you <3
