They are not my preference, but indeed a I see them quite often. I find a drop shoulder doesn't layer well when it's on a long sleeve tee and I want to pop a blazer or jacket over it. But that could just be me.

I’m not against, per se, but think they are overused in production as a means of avoiding size- fit needs. I sometimes get a sweater with a dropped shoulder if the overall design and fit works.
I do think they read very casual and even in better knits, so I have to watch out , or else I’ll find something like a cashmere sweater with that won’t translate into a more polished or dressy outfit like I assumed it would.

What a great topic and set of responses! I have broad shoulders/large bust and generally avoid drop shoulders because I feel like they make me look larger than I’d like up top. But I do really like a cap sleeve and I have been puzzled that a cap sleeve often hits the same place on my arm as the seam of a drop shoulder. Why do I like one, but not the other! I am thinking from this thread that it might be the lighter weight of my cap sleeve tops.

I'm with Angie - it all depends on the details. For me (smaller frame, square but not broad shoulders, small bust, long neck, short waist) it can work really well if the shoulder drop is not too extreme, if the top is shorter (as Carla suggests and Chris's examples show) and -- crucially -- if the neckline is neat. A wide loose neckline will make the top slide around all over and feel awkward and look too casual and/or messy.

What I like about dropped shoulders -- if the fit is good, they are comfortable, easy to move in and convey an impression of ease and "cool."

Some that work in my closet...

Note, I am also a fan of a fitted shoulder. And a dolman sleeve or raglan sleeve. Again - it's all in the details of the specific garment.

Jaime I went and checked my wardrobe. As well as the olive and gold top I have one other, and realise that when wearing that it often feels tight lower on the shoulder as if a bra strap has fallen down. But it’s not a bra strap, it’s the top. So I thank you, another thing to look out for and probably avoid.
I must have more choice of shoulder types than you are seeing.

I don’t mind them IF the other details are right. I have a large bust and slightly narrow and very uneven shoulders (thanks, scoliosis and spinal torsion!). The wrong shoulder and sleeve on a garment emphasizes my asymmetry, while another will help hide it. They’re like cap sleeves in that way — if they are substantial or dropped enough, it can work. But if they’re just slightly capped or dropped, it’s not good. I’ve had shoulders narrowed on sleeveless tops and dresses to make them work better on me for this reason. Some of my favorite successful examples are below.

I HATE dropped shoulders especially when paired with oversized torso fit, and agree they make wide shoulders look wider and to my eye they sometimes look sloppy or too casual. I look for raglan and inset sleeves. I limit knitting patterns to saddle shoulders, inset or raglan.

Jaime--I also have wide shoulders, but I haven't noticed this issue for myself. However, my nicer clothes are usually flush at my shoulder, while my more casual shirts might be drop shoulder. Shein acrylic sweater, Target wide-collar sweatshirt, etc. I think the cheaper brands have a knack for making odd cuts accessible. I just don't know if you could wear them for more than family gatherings, streaming movies on the couch, etc.

I do think some oversized things are dumb, though. Oversized blazers only looked good on women who really found the right blazer for themselves. Otherwise, I hated that trend.

I actually have broad shoulders and narrow everything else, and the drop shoulders work really well for me, as long as the sleeves aren’t big and puffy, because that adds the width right back on.

I have small shoulders though, and perhaps that one top does look a bit boxy on me but I love the colours of olive and gold. Like Sal I do love raglan sleeves if I can get them, I think they suit me.

I HATE drop shoulders, Jaime - I'm with you. I didn't notice them for years - but once I did I couldn't go back. I am small shouldered and on my I had a lightbulb moment that drop-shoulders were what was making my outfit look sloppy and unstructured.

I think the reason they persist is exactly what you guessed - they are much easier for manufacturers because they can cut a 'square' torso and then just add the arms, vs. creating inset shoulders.

In fact, this is one of the reasons that all my sweaters are now vintage/hand knit (thrifted) - because they almost all feature inset shoulders that look more flattering, tailored and luxe to my eye. I rarely see them in retail!

I also love a raglan shoulder but again, that is hard to find. Especially in sweatshirts! Gah, that wide arm, dropped shoulder sloppy look drives me bananas (on me.)

For those of us with a larger chest it isn’t conventionally flattering . A looser look and fit can still be achieved with a traditional shoulder line - usually in better brands though . The dropped shoulder look is fine if you’re a certain body type though .

I want to minimize the appearance of a large bust. When the horizontal seam on the sleeve of a drop shoulder top is at the same level as my bust, I think it draws attention to that part of my body.

I have broad shoulders and I'm busty and I feel kind of the opposite. When something fits at the shoulder line and has an obvious seam I think it just accents how broad my shoulders are...or it doesn't fit at all because the seam hits further in than the edge of my shoulders. Dropped fit kind of glides over and blurs the edge so I feel like the exact width of my shoulders is a little camouflaged. I guess it partly depends on how stiff vs fluid the fabric or knit is, but in general I'm a fan of dropped shoulders.

I’m with Chris987. The right ones are just great. I also question the assumption that the way to look good is to take up as little space as possible. I also have some puff sleeve pieces with the volume at the cuffs and they are also really flattering. And just wore out a top I loved with a small shoulder pad.

Nope, I don't care for them on myself either. I like the shoulder seams to fit properly on my shoulders. I also have to agree that this might just be another way for manufacturers to do a bit of a one size fits a lot more a people option.

I don't like them either and especially on me. I have well defined shoulders and I like to see them ... well defined.

They don't look good on me. I am a slightly Inverted Triangle at a lower weight and I do get the idea that I can look like a Footballer in some dropped shoulder tops. Not my favourite either on me. They are better if they are a slimmer fit in the torso.
