This J Crew blazer is awesome, you guys. Comfortable and hangs really well. I’d get the grey too if I didn’t have grey already.

Thanks, Sterling. I want to post the dresses, because I have the shots,
but am tired of seeing my cracked mirror!

Update - I wore #5 successfully as outwear because it was warm yesterday. I was able to put it back on inside as needed, too. I think I can layer under it, but not put it under a coat. That was what was confusing me. I think it will be a keeper.

Poor brown equestrian blazer. I’d style it the same way, Janet, but I have trouble putting anything but a black tee under it. I don’t have your collection of graphic tees! Just a handful that won’t work in that case. I think some other person will be thrilled to have it. Anyone interested? Size 10, I think.

I'll only address the ones you're on the fence about, since you're already set on the keepers. I really like both 3 and 5 on you, but I completely understand the issues you describe. #3 looks like it's a little outside of your usual color palette and style, so if it's that hard to work with, I say let it go. My instinct would be to play it down with jeans and a tee, but that's what I do with everything, so feel free to ignore me. I love #5 on you -- it looks really sharp. I'd play around with stylings of it to see if there is a way that makes it work, or maybe try hanging it with your outerwear to see if that makes you see it differently and reach for it that way.

Wow, you can really rock a blazer!

I read through everything you said, before I looked at the photos, and thought, “I would go ahead and return #3”. Make no mistake, you look stunning in it, but if it doesn’t feel authentic to your style, it’s going to be visual white noise, junking up you closet.

Whereas I think you should keep #5. I love my leather jackets, but I periodically have a day when I don’t want to wear leather, or there is a possibility of rain. Keep it, and if you don’t wear it, then reevaluate in a few months.

cindy, I think #6 is more of an indoor topper, and I've now re-conceptualized #5 as an outdoor topper that I can leave on inside if need be. So I think I may have a niche for it now. That said, this jacket does show up on resale sites occasionally, if you really like it. I created a find that includes the information on it.

I love #5 and #6, probably because my style is very RATE. If you are certain #6 is a keeper, and you have other things you'd reach for before #5, then 5 should go. It can go my way if you want it to have a good home

Sarah, you're right on the money. It especially sticks out with all the other blazers lined up against it. If I had gotten this same blazer in a black and white houndstooth, I would probably hold on to it forever. Sale goggles are very powerful!

Jessikams, thank you, that's a great point. It does allow for some layering.

I am wearing the grey moto today, as it's extremely unseasonably warm here today. It's nice because I can throw it back on at work, wher I'm often a little too cold, but also layer sleeves underneath it, as Jessikams pointed out.

You have an amazing collection of blazers! They all look good on you. I think it is wise to see which dresses and skirts you can pair them with before deciding which ones to pass on. My favorites on you are #2, #3 and #6. I like the fabric patterns.

I (intentionnally) looked at the photos before reading the text, and here are the thoughts that came to my mind :
- #1, #7 and #8 look pretty and well-fitting, classic and classy.
- #2 is gorgeous! Perfect fit, beautiful pattern, and amazing pearl details.
- #3 has a country chic vibe IMO - it reminds me of some Ralph Lauren or Barbour ads. I like it. #4 has a similar vibe, but toned down. I LOVE its color and texture, and it fits you well.
- #6 is gorgeous : cut, fit, fabric look perfect. In comparison, #5 looks less interesting.

After having read the text, I think I would pass on #5. And if #3 is not your style and is hardly worn, it may not be worth keeping it as you have several great alternatives.

Angie has written in favor of having varied body widths in a jacket capsule. I would argue it’s also important to have varied sleeve widths, and for this reason the Factory Moto might be a keeper. In the pics, the sleeves on that one look more spacious than the others, so it could have different layering possibilities.

I like the JCrew factory blazer with the gold buttons and the boden blazer the best. The others are good too, but the two I mentioned are the best, to my eye.

tanstaafl and Katerina, you are correct. The blazer in #3 is not my style, and that’s the whole problem. I will pass it on. It’s probably not worth consigning unless I bring it with a few other offerings. I’m guessing it would fetch no more than $25.

Jenn, that story is amazing, I have been a cool prof, but this jacket wouldn’t have been me back then either. I got my husband a similar one - he rocks it. He’s the son of tow professors though not one himself. Must be genetic.

Thanks, everyone! I’m hoping that mentally recategorizing #5 as outerwear will help it get a few more wears. I do love a moto. I don’t need to be a workhorse, but would like to bring it out more.

It sounds like you pretty much know where you’re at with all these, and just needed a check-in/try-on to be sure, so listen to your instincts.

I had a blazer very much like your brown tweed one, same color with elbow patches and the whole shebang. I’d actually walked away from it after trying on in the store and then, when my mother passed away, found the same piece in her closet. It felt like kismet, but nope. I never looked like the cool professor I envisioned, and always took it off shortly after putting it on. Off to the donation box it went!

Really great collection. Number 6 is my favorite, I can see why you get a lot of compliments on it.

Number three looks nice, but does stand out as quite different from the outfits I have seen you post. I’m not sure if it is worth consigning or not as I have no idea what it retailed for or what it sells for secondhand. Maybe check Poshmark and EBay to see what others are selling for before heading to the consignment store?

Thanks everyone! I usually pass on clothes to a local nonprofit, whose used bookstore I held my wedding reception in. But I wonder if the Anne Klein blazer is worth trying to consign. I may get a little something for it in one of the consignment stores on the UES. (I have a feeling I’ll be bringing some Boden items over after my next post, too. Alas.)

The puffy moto may stick around to see if I wear it in the spring. I think it’s on probation, though! It’s probably only good in a very narrow rage of temps, if I wear it as outwear. Whether we get a lot of that range of temps varies from year to year. The Cat, I do like it on me as well, which is why I’m not ready to quite give up on it yet.

I received my two new blazers from AT and J Crew - keeperd! I decided to compare them to my current closet offerings in that category, as I haven’t been wearing them all enough. I feel that this could change in the near future, but I still don’t want to keep too many. That said, I’m only really on the fence about a couple of items here. That will change when I get to skirts and dresses, which I will post separately so as not to overwhelm you all.

These are the non-knitwear dressy toppers in my current closet for winter. (I left our anything I use more as casual outwear.) I have to change items out seasonally, but some of these stay in all year. My goal is to make sure that my capsules of the items I wear less during the winter (toppers, skirts and dresses) aren’t hugely larger than I need them to be.

1. New J Crew blazer along with a Tippi sweater in black. I’m delighted that the tippi fits under the jackets. Layering under blazers is often a problem for me.

2. New AT striped blazer. This feels like my old style, which favored cleaner lines and preppier looks. And STRIPES. I am still fond of those things and moving back towards them a bit for work. 90% of the time I will dress things like this down with a tee and jeans. That’s okay.

Anyway, those are the new purchases that are keepers.

3. Anne Klein blazer - This is out of left field. I bought it when I thought I wante a really classic piece, plus I had sale goggles on. It’s beautifully made. My style promptly veered from classic soon after I got it, and I am not sure this color story is me at all, at any point in my style journey. It’s tempting to argue that this should stay because it’s classic and I can wear it for years, which is why bought it. But perhaps it should be set free to find it’s true owner? ON THE FENCE

4. Boden tweed blazer - this is equestrian in a way that feels more like me. I’ve already worn this calendar year. It’s a little itchy at the neck but otherwise I love it. KEEPER

5. J Crew Factory moto - I don’t wear this much, even though in theory it should be a slam dunk for my style. It’s kind of puffy, and I think maybe it should be in an outwear capsule m, whereas I’ve been trying to think of it as a jacket I can wear indoors. I think maybe I should try it like that, but the fact is we don’t have too much weather that calls for jackets of this weight. I would probably wear my leather moto jacket on such days most of the time. ON THE FENCE

6. Loft moto - I get lots of compliments whenever I break this out. It’s unlined so it’s pretty good for warmer days too. KEEPER

7. Laundry grey blazer - have worn already this calendar year, and it looks good especially with T-shirts. KEEPER

8. J Crew Factory wool blend blazer - this is also a more classic style that I still feel comfortable with in my wardrobe. The rest of my comments match the ones for #7. KEEPER.

9 - bonus pic of new AT appliqué knit tee that I think will look spiffy with many of these. KEEPER.

Conclusions - I think this capsule is in good shape because I tend to think hard when adding a blazer to my wardrobe, since they cost a little more. Also I’ve bought most of these in the past year or two, after sizing out of my former collection. Except for the exception of number 4, the colors are all very cohesive and go with many things in my wardrobe. I will have to figure out how to style number 2, but I think it probably for fills the dressier item place that number 3 was supposed to fill and didn’t. It’s probably a further argument for getting rid of number 3. Anyway, any input, especially on the fence items, would help me.

Stay tuned for part 2 on dresses and skirts! I need lots of help there.

NB: I know getting a new mirror would help but a lot of other more important stuff has been breaking in my house recently. It’s on the list for soon, but I want to go in person, not order.

ETA: Results - This is a good capsule to begin with. I'm passing on #3 to find its true owner. #5 is a keep now that I'm thinking about it more as outwear.
