Thank you!

Ok, I'm slowly getting it. If it's raining and I want to be dressed up, I should have an umbrella... or a chauffeur :) My existing trench + maybe a new coordinating umbrella should take care of that.

I'll take a look at Everlane/Arc'teryx and then probably order several coats to try out. I do need some kind of practical coat but I'd like it be as flattering as possible.

Moving from Montana to Portland, OR I have come to understand that one raincoat just will not do. Similarly in Montana I had multiple very cold weather coats.

In other words, I think what we are saying, is there is no "one coat to rule them all." If you need a gear coat, you need a gear coat. Go for it!

If you want something to wear with dresses, a gear coat isn't going to do it.

I actually just bought the Patagonia Torrentshell City Coat you put in Finds. It is a great, and pretty darn stylish, everyday rain shell -- if you live in the sticks like I do. I'm in a very rural small town in the northeast. Most people, when it rains, just throw on a Gore-Tex gear jacket over whatever they're wearing. Even at events like art openings, graduations, etc. most people are in Carhartts or Levis, flannel, Merrells, etc. So, for me, this is definitely an upgrade relative to my environmental norm. I just wanted something that looked good over dresses and skirts, tbh. And this season Pata has some colors that I absolutely love (I got the turquoise! I'm sooo done with black rain coats for a while).

For city wear or formal wear, though, I would opt for something one step up -- a classic trench coat or similar in a water resistant, non-crinkly fabric. Have you looked at Everlane's trenches and anoraks? They're make some nice styles that can be dressed up or down, and are quite minimalist/classic in their details. All water-resistant, I'm afraid, not true waterproofs, but, as noted above by others, that's the price you pay for dressy. In a dressy situation, you most likely will not be standing around in pouring rain for hours -- but bring an umbrella just in case. ;)

Too bad Arc'teryx has only released their Veilance line for men thus far... seems to me women need city-specific gear just as much as men do: http://veilance.arcteryx.com/

Hmmm. It depends which hypothetical Toronto resident. .

And what kind of rain we are talking about.

I wouldn't wear any of the coats (from Pendleton to North Face or even Patagonia City coat) as a "dressy" option, i.e. a work coat for an office city job.

If I were working in Toronto, I'd have a rain resistant trench and an umbrella for work days, and a gear coat (like the ones you've shown) for weekend walking/ hikes.

Never mind "if I were working in Toronto." That's what I have now. For "going out" either in my small city or the larger one, I have a Theory trench that is rain resistant, not waterproof. If needed, I supplement with an umbrella.

For torrential downpours, casual to the gym and back, or hikes where I plan to be out for a while, I wear a gear coat.

Did you decide already? I agree that it doesn't look the least bit dressy, but I like it a lot. I would probably get the red one, but the yellow would be better for visibility on a rainy day. The yellow reminds me of the slickers we wore sailing. They're yellow so if you fall overboard they find you easier.

I like the red. The black is a bit generic and the red a bit of fun with your need for function. Unless you find the red to not be your red...

Thank you Rachel, KL, Suz (nice to 'see' you too), Colette, Diana and Angie! I need to go back and re-evaluate on this one. Being away from this forum and living in northern CA has clearly changed my ability to judge what is gear. :)

(1) The plum colored trench below is my dressy-coat when there's no rain. The belt drives me a little crazy though because it is fussy and I wouldn't buy another belted coat.

My old departed coat looked a cross between (2) and (3). Simple styling of (3) with the fabric being closer to (2).

Let's give up on the dressiness and assume I'm wearing the Fluevog boots (4) + BCBG dress (5) + patterned tights, which would be a very typical rainy-day dinner outfit for me.

On top of that outfit, would something similar to the Ilse Jacobsen raincoat (6) be ok?

Re-evaluating, perhaps what I really need is "the coat a Toronto resident wears in the daytime on a rainy day". Would either North Face (7) or Patagonia (8) or the original Pendleton fit that description?

I like the red but to me this is a pretty casual looking coat, possibly falling into gear territory for me (but my threshold is low). I have the same wardrobe hole and have had trouble filling it. I want something that can go from low key hiking to the symphony, lol. Here's two I was considering from NAS but I can't tell from the descriptions how water resistant they are.

It's a great coat but I don't see it as dressy either, in either colour. It might be less noticeable in black, but not more dressy.

I think black will be dressier than red in this coat, but the style does read inherently casual to me regardless. Like Rachy I wouldn't wear it over a cocktail dress or a suit. I think trench coats tend to read more dressy and I ordered this Michael Kors water-resistant trench (in the NAS) to fill the same type of wardrobe hole, although it may be too detailed for you.

My vote is red too, but I don't think this is cocktail dress dressy. To be honest, I don't think real raincoats come that fancy. Your man just has to hold an umbrella over you...

Sorry, I can't add this as a find right now, but I tried on this gorgeous Pendleton jacket in the store and can't decide on a color.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/pe.....at/4347388

I have a 'gear' rain jacket and a plum colored trench without a hood. My wardrobe hole is a dressy raincoat with hood + zipper + minimal detailing that can be worn over an interview suit or fancy dress or sweater. My dearly departed previous raincoat (may it R.I.P.) could be squished compactly into a bag and pulled out without a wrinkle, but I've given up on that particular attribute.

The store only had yellow and black. The yellow was fun and happy but not as dressy as the black. It would stand out more in a formal situation.

Spouse is advocating for the red.

Which color do you think is best? Is red dressy enough if I were say, wearing a cocktail dress + heels + clutch? Should I stick with the safe choice of black? Dare to stand out and have fun with yellow?

Thanks in advance!

(re-evaluating in lights of comments - further response down thread)
