I have these, which I can comfortably walk in for a few hours (soft suede, not tight). But the narrow kitten heel is something I have to be careful of, because on uneven ground it can get caught or scuffed. On flat surfaces with no pronounced cracks it's fine.

https://poshmark.com/listing/E.....707c074dd5

There are several brands of shoes with wide ankle bands like this, but pointed toes and kitten heels, and I think they look really refined on the foot but tend to be comfortable and secure if they have good padding. Suede or soft leather makes a pointed toe comfortable for me.

I also have some higher heeled wedge mary janes by earthies, but they have a more casual vibe, probably not what you are going for.

Thanks for all your input. It'll take me some time to go through all the suggestions but I appreciate every one of them!

To address the issue of walking in comfy shoes and changing later...I understand the idea and I do it for work all the time, but for evenings, this just doesn't work for me. It's partly what Janet said (it kills the sexy/romantic vibe) and partly that I like to be unencumbered. If I'm wearing a cocktail dress, I'm either carrying a small cocktail purse or nothing at all (only my phone, which often goes in SO's pocket :)). I don't like the idea of carrying a pair of shoes around with me.

I really hope I can find something that fits the bill, but until then I would rather drive than change my shoes out or wear flats all night. Reading many of your posts has encouraged me though!

These may be too casual for you - but I just purchased them specifically for summer dress wearing. The first two are Anne Klein Sport - and are available in black as well. The last pair are from 9 West - Canadian company, and are gorgeous. All three pairs are extremely comfortable, and I'm having a tough time deciding which pair(s) to keep.

I usually wear Joseph Seibel (max 1 1/2 inch heel) when I need to walk and be dressed up. I also find wedges and block heels to be easier to walk in. But feet are all so different.

I have to agree with BC. I remember New York in the 80's and 90's, women on the street all wearing sneakers with their power suits as they went to and from work. They'd change shoes at the office. You will hurt your feet walking in shoes that weren't meant to walk distances.

I agree that wedges are usually the most comfortable to get some heel height and dressiness with walking comfort! Here are my two most comfortable "dressy" shoes -- which actually dress up and down pretty well too. I know, Rockstuds have been overdone by the bloggers and they are really expensive, but darn if they are not incredibly comfortable! And the LD Tuttle sandals were also pricey but my cost-per-wear must be down to barely anything at this point, I've worn them so much. Different types of dressy, but just thought this might spark some ideas.

Sole Society has the most comfortable heels I have ever worn. I can walk and stand in their 3inch heels for hours. They are also very reasonably priced. I've turned many friends on to these shoes, they are a real find. I'm someone who would never wear heels until I found these.

I have the very same dilemma. I cover it two ways.

I do wear heeled boots or sandal boots for the 1km walk to restaurants from my home.

If I am wearing a cocktail or more dressy outfit I tend to walk in flats (anything that is comfortable) and swap at the restaurant or party into my impractical heels.

I do feel a little silly in a LBD and sneakers or slip on shoes but it is worth it for the joy of wearing my lovely heels when I am there.

Definitely get as chunky of a heel as you feel is aesthetically pleasing to you. This will help fatigue and also prevent the heel from getting stuck in sidewalk cracks. I think it would also be helpful to get a shoe with some type of strap on it to help it stay on the foot.

I have found White House Black Market to make comfortable shoes, as well as the brand Sofft. Other brands I have had good luck with are Sam Edelman, Topshop, and Banana Republic.

Just for fun, here are two I collected in Finds to show you, because I think they are gorgeous, dressy, a bit edgy (which the dress suggested to me) and they look like manageable heels. Also, I believe Angie has the Bella Vita pair in a different color (gold or white, or maybe both), and swears by them.

eta: Angie mentions the Bella Vita pumps here.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far - I will check all of them out! To answer Liz's question, I would pair that dress with something like this: https://www.google.ca/search?q.....Rsh1CmM%3A

The okalas would fit the bill too. I haven't yet had a chance to look at the other suggestions.

To me, a dressy heel is generally pointed or open toe, with a pointy (as opposed to chunky) heel. I'm not strictly opposed to a wedge, but they tend to look a little less dressy to my eye. I'm aware that's a compromise I may have to make though...

Suz, that's very interesting what you say about the heel height. Mine were 3 inches. I'm pretty sure of that. Although, I did buy and return them last summer. I wonder if the height varies depending on the size? I wear size 10, and maybe on smaller sizes the heel is shorter, to maintain the proportions.

JAileen makes a good point; everybody's feet are different! For me, the flat shoes that many people find comfy typically feel awful. There is nothing less comfortable for me than a ballet flat because I have narrow ankles and my toes cramp up trying to keep them on. (This is why an ankle strap is good for me; it holds the shoe on my foot.) A one or two inch heel is heaven...over 3 and forget it. The Okalas say they are 3 but it's really more like 2 and a bit...but the point is, they have to fit in the last (footbed) or they will kill you regardless!

If you are considering something like the Okalas, these AGLs (in Finds) that I just got are a similar look with a slightly lower, wider heel, and very comfy for a dressy shoe. They also come in black with the gold strap, which would go with the dress you linked to.
I also tried on the Paul Green pumps below, and they were super comfy as well. The strap didn't hit me in the right place; it rubbed under my ankle bone.
I also think something with a platform could work. I don't have any examples right at the moment, though.

When you look at potential shoes, you should have an idea of how high a heel you can comfortably wear. Suz can comfortably walk several miles in the Okalas. I could barely walk across the house. They're beautiful, but have 3 inch heels. I can't wear that high of a heel. Whenever I searched for dressy yet low heeled shoes, Stuart Weitzman always popped up. The heels are under 2 inches, yet look very dressy to me. The main drawback is the price.

Tsubo heels are stable and comfortable. I wear them walking in NYC's theatre district and restaurants. Or I carry my Puma ballet flats (padded gear sole) in a tote and change into them for the walk, then slip into heels for the restaurant. Works for travel, too.

Yes! The Okalas work for me for this purpose. There are lots of similar shoes around but for my foot this particular one (Sam Edelman) happened to be best. They come in lots of colours and patterns and you can get them at The Bay if you are in Canada. Also at other places.

I can definitely walk up to 3 or 4 km in those. I wouldn't want to wear them for a 10 km hike up hills or anything. But to stroll the pavements and do so at a decent clip, they are great. They also look good with jeans or cropped trousers.

Another option you might consider, as some have already noted, is a block heel or a wedge. Not quite as dressy, but usually a little more comfortable.

As Smittie said, Clarks might also work if they fit your foot. (They tend not to fit me all that well, but everyone's foot is a bit different.)

Another line you could consider is Geox.

I like Laura's and Rachylou's suggestions. Also try the Rockport total motion line.
The footbed is amazingly and massively cushioned and the toe box seems to be very-well designed to not squeeze. They also have m and wide widths. Definitely an all-day pump and I could manage 3km in mine.
Clarks is also a really comfortable brand. Just make sure to get heels with lots of padding.

Could you give some examples of the types of shoes you are hoping to find in a comfortable version?

We all have different ideas of what dressy means, and we all have different ranges of heel heights that we consider comfortable.

I hear you - this is often my problem too when I am dressed up for work but need to walk around afterwards (I live in a very walkable area.)

My best luck was with a pair of Frye heels a few years ago that were so insanely comfortable, I could wear them anywhere. Maybe check their website? Likely more rugged than you were looking for, but worth a shot.

I agree with Rachy - wedge heels would likely be most comfortable, and I would stay away from pointy toes. I also find the Cole Haan heels with Nike Air insoles to be reasonably comfortable.

Angie should have some thoughts as she is all about walkable shoes for her day to day activities...

I think I'd go for wedge heels or block heels...you'll get stability, can achieve a brisk clip, and avoid getting stuck in cracks in the sidewalk. But I know my knees would still hurt after a half hour...

You could try something like the Okala that has an ankle strap and so stays on your foot more easily than a similar height heel without a strap. Another option would be to find a pair of dressy flats to wear for the walk and carry your heels in your bag to change into.

Hi lovely ladies,

Most of you will not remember me because I haven’t posted here in years. Personal circumstances took me away from YLF for a long while but I have continued to lurk when I’ve found the time! Now I am back with a dilemma that I hope you can help me solve.

My SO lives in a lovely area, within walking distance to downtown, the lakeshore, and many restaurants. We like to eat at those restaurants. And sometimes before or after dinner, we like to stroll around the lake.

Generally we prefer to walk to dinner. It’s pleasant, it’s romantic, it’s good for the environment, and we don’t have to worry about our alcohol consumption. However. Occasionally we are more dressed up. Sometimes I’m wearing a cocktail dress. And on those occasions, we drive, because I’m wearing dressy heels that just do not lend themselves to excessive walking.

He says surely there is a shoe out there that will satisfy both requirements – dressy enough to go with a dress like this: http://www.guess.ca/en/Catalog.....61GDHP1156 yet comfortable enough to walk 3 km in, outside, over pavement and sidewalks. Does such a thing exist? He tells me he’s willing to pay if I can find something that fits the bill :). So tell me what you think please! I could really use your help!
