Just chiming back in to say that I love wearing red, white and blue. I don't like wearing green and gold though (the Aussie colours) Also that I have a red sparkly dress/tunic that I do actually wear for Christmas quite often, but I didn't buy it thinking that it was a Christmas colour.

It's funny about wearing clothes for cultural holidays not quite your own... I grew up in Hippieville in the Great Age of Peace and Love... lot of 'bridging' back then. Lot of on-purpose cultural sharing. So for my second god-child's christening, I went back to the home country and 'naturally' wore salwar kameez. Well, her dad is of Indian extract, and he was surprised to see me wearing the clothing of his ancestral homeland in yet a third nation. Lol! My tribe is the 'mixed' one.

Green for St. Patrick's Day (and often for Christmas or plaid for Christmas just out of nostalgia I guess) and usually some form of red, white and blue on July 4th. That's about my limit for color coordinating to any specific day.

When I worked in academia, I would sometimes invent myself a casual Friday (I could have worn a paper bag and no one would have noticed but I had my standards) and wear an outfit out of the university's logo wear, especially if I had tickets to an event that evening. I had a couple nice polo shirts and a fleece vest (which looked nicer than it sounds) that I would wear with black trousers or jeans if I was really cranky.

As I mentioned in Angie's blog post yesterday, I don't wear red, one of my country's national colours. I did however sport a tee with the Canada 150 symbol on it. I do try to wear green for St. Patrick's day - I now own a navy and green striped top with gold lettering. My family celebrates Christmas. This year I've decided to do a holiday capsule for about 6 weeks - mid November to the end of December. I'm a kindergarten teacher and a mom to a 7 year old so I do try to be festively dressed around other holidays like Thanksgiving, Halloween and Valentine's Day.

Interesting reading. Reminds me of comments to my post "Do you wear 'Easter colours'?" earlier this year. (You will find it under "Dressing".)

While I do dress up for several special occasions during the year, I seldom feel the need to wear special colours. Quite the contrary, there are times when I actually want to avoid certain colours. :-)

As I don't want to feel part of decorations for holidays I don't celebrate, I avoid wearing the theme colours associated with such holidays, like wearing red for Christmas as many others around here will do.

Also, I do not wear flag colours on national holidays. I look forward to the time when all national borders will have disappeared and humanity will be united in true peace. :-)

I don't, though my kids occasionally have dress your favourite sporting team colours day at school. I don't watch or follow sport. Some Australians wear flag paraphernalia on Australia day but it is a recent development and not one I am comfortable with, along with many Australians.

Hmm. I wear red and white on Canada Day (and since inspired by some Fabbers, for several days around it). For the festive season, from Advent through Epiphany, I wear something red, green, or gold each day, and keep adding to my funky Christmas sock collection.

I wear something green on St. Patrick's Day, something red on St. David's Day (Wales, March 1), and tartan on St. Andrew's Day and Robbie Burns Day. As of this year, I know to wear red on Chinese New Year as well.

I often wear a pastel at Easter (but rarely otherwise). Since attending a liturgical church, I know to wear red for Pentecost and pink for the third Sunday in Advent.

It all adds a bit of fun and interest to getting dressed, when otherwise my wardrobe is black and grey all winter and navy and white all summer.

Maybe I should come up with a tricolor outfit with a yellow star to wear on Acadian National Day, which is big in these parts and coming up in August.

What Bridgie said. Today I wore another subtle red, white and blue outfit.
I don't have special clothes, either, just my regular clothes. For Christmas I only wear red because I don't have any kelly green.

I also have some sterling silver pins for holidays, that I made - a heart, a shamrock, a jack o lantern, a tree. If I'm going somewhere around one if the holidays, I might wear one of them.

I have a hat for the local triple A baseball team, and for the San Francisco Giants. I don't have anything from my college, but I have a tee shirt from my husband's college, that his sister gave me.

I went to a cook out this evening. I wore blue jeans, an old, well tailored clear red and white Anne Klein shirt, a white denim vest, and dark blue denim sneakers. I usually do wear colors associated with each holiday. For Valentines day, it is red, pink white, Memorial Day and Labor Day, Veterans Day, I wear red, white and blue, each different from today. I wear Kelly green and royal blue for St. Pats day. For Easter Sunday, I wear pastel pink, blue, white, and/or green, not all the colors all the time. You get the idea. Thanksgiving is a little more difficult, but it is usually earth tones with a good deal of cream, off white, etc. For Christmas, it is red, green, cream in different variations. Years ago I wore "ugly" sweaters before they became so ugly. Do not wear them now. Maybe a black cashmere with rhinestones which is old and I love. New Years Eve and Day are wild cards. I do very little if any shopping for these special days. I wear what I have in my closet and wear for other days as well. I mix and remix. Some of you might remember when we celebrated George Washington's birthday only, rather than Presidents Day, which includes Lincoln's birthday and others. I used to bake a cherry pie in honor of Washington's birthday, but stopped doing that since I don't think cherry pie is appropriate for all president's birthdays. Just being silly now

I have a Pittsburgh Steelers T and earrings, several University of Kentucky Wildcats college football items, and lastly, a Charlotte Panthers T, all of which I have worn quite a bit in the past. Not so much now. Most all these items were gifts. I am probably the only person who would accept, wear and enjoy such things! lol

Ok, Sal, you asked, so there it is.

I usually don't remember, but thanks to YLF I did put on navy today. I was going to wear a red top but I might need it in the next few day and I haven't gone anywhere.
I bought a Chanukah jacket years ago and I also wear Chanukah socks. I have several pairs of socks with hearts but often forget to wear them for Valentine's Day. I'll also wear red for it.
I have a pair of Halloween socks if I didn't get rid of them and candy corn earrings. I can't remember the last time I wore them.
I don't go to sporting events often,
so I made earrings and bought a scrunchy.

I work in a school, and we regularly wear school colors on game day and green and gold when the Packers play. I often don't engage in the "proper" colored outfit for the holidays, but many people do.

For example, all the clothing flyers and advertisements have pink, red and white for Valentine's day. Red and green is typical at Christmas, especially for "ugly sweater" contests. Kids at school pinch one another if they are not wearing green for St. Patrick's Day. As you mentioned, red, white and blue or flag related items are popular attire for the Fourth of July. Interestingly, while orange and black are associated with Halloween, I rarely see Halloween themed outfits - it is either costumes or normal clothing, not color-related. Likewise, there is no color theme for the New Year.

Thanks Joy, some of the fundraisers here have colours associated - pink for anti-bullying, a loud shirt for Deaf Awareness. Schools and workplaces often support these days. I do wear a poppy on Anzac Day and a Daffodil on Daffodil Day (cancer fundraiser).

Absolutely! I wear red, white, and blue every 4th of July, and on Christmas Day I'll wear Christmas colors. I don't do much for other holidays except for wearing a pair of socks that go with that day. And since I'm a huge Phillies fan (I spent the first 29 years of my life living in the South Jersey//Philly area) a big part of my casual wardrobe capsule consists of Phillies tee shirts, sweatshirts, and baseball caps. Now that I live amongst the Mets/Yankees fans, all the more reason for me to support my original hometown team!

Oh sure: red, white and blue for July 4, purple and gold for school (high school and uni), a little red or gold for Chinese New Year; purple, green and gold for Mardi Gras...

But the sad, shameful thing... I have always unthinkingly managed to wear blue and white when I go to a baseball game and the A's (my home team) are playing Chicago...

I don't do it anymore, but I used to be notorious for "thematic" outfits, like stars&stripes for 4th of July and goofy Christmas socks and sometimes just a bunch of smiley face adorned garments all in one outfit.

In the US many of us grow up wearing school colors on game days, so wearing sports colors and gear for our city teams seems natural. Colors get associated and worn for various causes too...pink for breast cancer awareness, red for heart health, orange for gun control, etc. most wear some version of red, white and/or blue for July 4th. I am in the process of changing some wardrobe items from red, royal blue, and purple to orange and navy or dark blue for local sports teams.. Even if one is not a huge fan, it is good to have the colors ready for events in sports bars, home parties and game days.

Hi All

I notice some of our American forum members wear red, white and blue for 4th July, and I think Canadian forum members wear red and white for Canada Day.

I was wondering if there were any religious or public holidays or festivals when you chose to wear special colours, national attire, costumes etc.. Or even to support a sports team.

On rare occasions I might wear black as this is the NZ National colour - I can think of two times I have done this both for the Rugby. I don't own or wear a team shirt as such for our local teams, neither does Jon - but my sons do!!

So I am not a very good example, but I hope many others of you can share some celebratory ideas or colours with us all.

Thanks in advance,
Sally
