Velvets and brocades, all-over embroidery and patterned. They work well for me. For less formal but still dressy events in cold weather I often wear my flat OTK boots (which are fairly sleek w/gold hardware). It's pretty common around here to wear booties and boots to things like cocktail receptions and the like. There are not very many booties and boots that would look as dressy as a pump--though there are some. The Cole Haan OTK boots are an example of a dressy boot.
