Airin, I know what you mean. Most of the time I feel pretty good about my body, but there's nothing like some bad fluorescent lighting to highlight every flaw and make you wonder, how come I never noticed that cellulite before??

Laura, I know what you mean about the places where there's no mirror in the changing room! So annoying. However, the one place I don't mind coming out of the change room is this little boutique place that sells locally designed clothing. The reason I don't mind is that I've been in there enough that I know the saleswomen, and they will give honest opinions on hemlines and such, so it's kind of nice to have their help. Plus I chitchat with them a bit. But in big impersonal shops in the mall, where I don't know the sales assistants, I hate having to parade around in front of everybody!

I have noticed that shops that sell swimsuits usually have awesome lighting. I guess they need to!

Have you ever wondered if part of the reason why women tend to like shoes and handbags so much is that you don't have to worry about being horrified by your lumps and bumps when you try them on?

Oh, I hate the dressing rooms that don't have enough hangers to put stuff, especially if they haven't cleaned it out in a while and all the spots are taken with other people's rejects. I think it's one of our local Kohl's that always looks like a rampaging horde has been through the dressing rooms, no matter what the time or day.

With lighting and mirrors, Gap and BR are often bad, but my least favorite is Chico's, because they don't have any mirrors in the individual rooms and you have to come out into the main area to look at yourself in the mirror.

Even the grocery store has good lighting in the meat section to sell more meat---you'd think clothing stores would do what more they can to sell more clothes!!

Myself--I don't lock myself in any room with a full length mirror.

eh eh! For me the worst are Mango (MNG)!!! They are narrow and the don't even have a chair! They have few.. I don't know how to say in English.. hangers to put the clothes, so it drives me crazy!

Airin, better these ones with a bad light then the other that have skinny mirrors!!!

I agree with crwilson, I worry more about the dressing rooms, with the skinny mirrors and flattering lights, that make you look too good, only to get home and see the item doesn't work for you. I'm pretty critical /analytical so I take note of the lighting and mirror situation, good or bad, when considering my purchase. I still do the final decision on keeping something when I get home and try it with my other pieces (in normal lighting and with a normal mirror). If I need to return something, I do that.

Zara and H&M have the worst dressing rooms! Why is that? I guess they don't need to upgrade. People buy their stuff anyway - one of the most successful retailers in the world.

I've actually noticed that in Zara here too. I brought a bunch of clothes I liked into the dressing room and ended up buying nothing because I couldn't believe how bad I looked. Sometimes I skip the dressing rooms altogether because I don't want to depress myself, and just return anything I don't like later.

In some ways, though, I would prefer to look bad in the dressing room than to get home with a new item and find that the dressing room had skinny mirrors with lighting that made me look tan and healthy, when in reality I look short, stumpy, and a sickly shade of yellow.

It does make it difficult to judge how one really looks, though, which makes it hard to tell what you might actually want to purchase.

Yes, that happens to me, too. Why would they do that? It would seem to me that better lighting would mean better sales...

Hasn't it ever happened to you? You go to a store, pick up a few things you fancy, get into the dressing room, see yourself naked in the damned mirror and fall into a depression. The worst thing is that you didn't look like that three hours ago when you left home. This happens to me every time I go to an INDITEX shop (think Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear, Bershka, Stradivarius... for the European girls out there). After getting depressed once and again, I realize it ONLY happens when I go to these shops. When I go to other stores, I look fine. So I have come to realize that it's the light they use in the dressing rooms. It's badly positioned and the color is just wrong, so it creates shadows all over your curvy body, including flabby bits, wrinkles (if you have some), stretch marks and cellulite. Now, why do they do that, I have no clue. But I almost never buy stuff there just because of their dressing rooms, which narrows my buying possibilities a lot, since those are the major shops in Spain for people my age and my budget. When I do buy stuff, it is because I check myself in the outside mirror AND I feel strangely positive that day so that nothing can make me feel bad. Otherwise, it ends in failure.
So if it ever happens to you, just know that it's not you, gorgeous ladies, it's the light!!!
