Lovely choices. I wfh 80% of the time and the line between nightwear and loungewear has certainly blurred. I was on an interview board (virtual) so was only the top of me was visible. Makeup, hair done, top and jacket with just a pair of knickers on the bottom half! I really need to sort myself out

I pretty much wear the same clothes inside my home and out except my non-casual dresses are for outside only, along with some dressier items and dressy shoes. And some items that are cozy but not great will only see outside on a casual walk.

Some really great ideas that I can steal for my casual at home wear. Everything looks great and I especially like your matching set in #7. I work from home only 2 days per month, and we don’t turn on cameras for meetings so I can work in pajamas if I want to. I am similarly as you, used to change immediately when I return home into something comfortable. Even socks, watch and bra are bothering me. But I had to step up my game because of my two kids and their social life. There are often unannounced visits, and sleep overs, and I don’t want to embarrass my kids with my ratty lounge wear in front of their friends.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts on dressing for WFH, so many interesting approaches.

Kkards, you looked great during January challenge. I sometime change from my WFH outfit in the evening as well, especially if I will be cooking and am wearing something that needs dry cleaning.

Jennie, I am pretty sure "

psychological" was the intended word. Sometimes spell correct software does strange things.

Jonesy, thank you! Yes, it sounds that a lot of people had such thoughts during the pandemic. I have read that loungewear sales peaked, but eventually went back down as consumers got tired of it and started craving dressier clothing.

DonnaF, an apron is a great idea, thank you!

Irina, thanks. I decided to make the white sneakers my 'slippers" for WFH, they don't go out. I have regular slippers for regular loungewear, when I am not working.

Jamie, you are very kind. I employed a similar tactic before we went back on hybrid schedule. While we were only WFH, in later stages I tried to get dressed and go out for a walk, even if only to the grocery store, at least a couple if times a week. I don't think I made it everyday, tough.

Fantastic outfits for WFH or any time - which is the point. I work from home part of most days, but make a point to get dressed and go out for some of the day also even if I don't have a specific meeting or whatever. My WFH or just at home clothing are my alter ego - sweatpants and graphic t's or sweatshirts. Which is why I make a point of getting dressed and out every day!

I have this instilled in me - good clothes worn only outside of the house. I would want to change it and sometimes imagine myself dressed in cashmere pants or nice sweaters. But my reality involves two cats who are all over me even when I WFH. So, for now it’s something practical and inexpensive.

You, however, raised a bar, nice outfits for WFH.

And as always, I’m fascinated by shoes people wear at home!

As a kid, I was trained to change into *play* clothes upon arrival home. Nowadays almost all my clothes are machine washable so not so precious, and I wear an apron virtually all the time at home unless I’m in a Zoom meeting. It also means I have to remove it before going out but manage to keep it on when checking for mail. I try to buy comfortable footwear but concede that I sometimes need to change upon arrival home.

Traditional or even elevated lounge wear doesn’t particularly fit me since I have short legs and arms. Maybe that’s why I never got into the trend?

Fab set of WFH outfits, Tanya! My faves are #3 and #8 (those fancy joggers are excellent!) but everything looks good. I had a similar epiphany at some point during the pandemic that I should spend a bit more on loungewear that I can wear to work (i.e., endless Zoom meetings).

Wouldn’t that be psychological not physiological? It’s a distinction you’re making in your mind not your body?
However when I work it is mostly out of the house. I don’t change when I come in though, I just make sure the work clothes are comfortable.

Well….your WFH is aspirational for me…as you might have seen during my Jan challenge, on a good day it was jeans and a sweater…but I will say that one thing I did the entire time we where working from home full time and even how that it’s only 2 days a week, I still change after work…for me there is a physiological component of recognizing that one part of the day is finished.

Thanks Lisa! I should figure out what about that shape makes it work well and repeat it elsewhere. And I totally hear you, there are still days when I don’t have it in my to even put together this kind of WFH outfit so I am in my regular loungewear.

I like #2 and #7 most!
When I first started WFH, I just wore my black lounge/sleepwear, then later in the pandemic I "graduated" to gear.
Now I don't often WFH, but when I do it's workwear, but not my dressier things.

I still operate that way and admit to even changing right into pyjamas after work in the middle of winter when it’s dark and cold , and if I’m especially beat after a long day . I can’t comment on the WFH situation but I LOVE that purple / eggplant set on you . It has a fantastic shape and is very flattering .

Thank you all for your input!

April and Dee, good to know that others grew up with this mindset, and managed to mostly snap out if it, that is inspirational.

Cat2, that sounds like a good strategy.

Angie, thank you very much! Glad I am moving the right way. As I wrote, I have plans to push myself more for spring.

Rachy, thanks! One would think a glam sweat suit is an oxymoron, but they exist!

Suz, agreed. A lot of us have probably changed our WFH styles, not necessarily in the same direction. Agreed on the usefulness of vests. I am seriously considering getting on of those lightweight Uniqlo puffer vests, but also wondering if it would be better to wait for fall considering we shouldn't have more than 4 weeks of winter left here, and possibly less.

Yes I grew up in a family with the exact same mindset, and that thinking still permeates somewhat to this day. But I am making more of an effort to mix the so call “good clothes” with my “everyday” so I can feel better about what I’m wearing.
You’ve have a nice mix of casual elevated looks for WFH. Especially like 2, 6 and 7.

So interesting, Tanya! I can see how this prolonged WFH situation would really shake up many people's style. For me (together with a move to a suburban area) it means I needed lots more gear for hiking. Clothes I wore for urban walking weren't ideal, especially the footwear.

These all look comfy, cozy, and attractive. The "softer" less structured looks are true outfits because you've chosen the pieces with such care. I especially like the vest idea for WFH. Keeps your arms free. And the asymmetrical lines keep it all more interesting!

WFH scrambled my wardrobe as well. Before the pandemic I had good clothes for work, a few weekend outfits based on jeans, and some really ratty sweats, paired with hand me down Ts from my husband’s sporting events. I ended up getting a lot of wear out of a handful of washable dresses, and some washable woven tailored looking elastic waist pants from Madewell. I don’t do athleisure for work.

I had that mindset too ("good" clothes and everything else) - I think one of the main things I've learned here is wear it all. Mix it up. Drag it out. If it feels like too much, dress it down.

Many thanks to the blog and forum over the years for this important lesson.

I have been raised to believe that clothes are divided into two completely separate groups: "good/nice" clothes (all levels of dressiness) that one wears outside of the house, and less good/house clothes, typically loungewear. As soon as one gets home, one changes into loungewear. The only time one wears "good" clothes at home is when entertaining or expecting company. Conversely, one never goes out in sweatpants and similar - even to run to the grocery store across the street you change into at least into jeans and nicer knit top.

I have not challenged this thinking much for the majority of my adult life. I have obviously noticed than not everyone does the same and enjoyed plenty of looks I would never do on others. With the rise of "Sporty Luxe" look several years ago, I have started occasionally pushing myself to do such a look outside, e.g. built around carefully styled silk joggers. However, I stuck to regular loungewear at home. While I know it is completely psychological, lots of items that are perfectly comfortable outside and I don't even notice them (jeans, underwire bras) start really bothering me the moment I get home and I can't wait to get them off. Similarly, while I am not particularly clumsy outside - I may spill something on myself once in a blue moon, the frequency of such incidents increases significantly at home.

Since the pandemic started in 2020, I stuck to this. We have been WFH exclusively until May 2022. Since my work culture is a bit formal, I kept two ponte blazers (one navy, one black) next to my desk to throw over whatever regular loungewear I was wearing for Zoom meeting. This prolonged loungewear dressing started bothering me last year, when it was obvious that there was no clear end and that hybrid work is going to be the future. So I started to put some effort into dressing the way I call "elevated loungewear", with several guidelines:

Wear at home only, nice pair of white slip on sneakers

Focus on trendier bottoms, such as dressier/woven joggers, wide leg track pants, pants with regular cuts but made of knits (ponte, double jersey, scuba)

Tops can be either classic or more current. Usually they are knitwear, or some kind of knitted topper over knitted top combo. Especially useful toppers are ponte/knit blazers, or hybrid jackets, for example, motos/bombers made of knit materials

Since I have a lot of older knitted tops and toppers, that I still like and are in good condition, but I don't feel like wearing outside since I have better/newer stuff, try to incorporate those at least half of the time into WFH outfits, so that they can get enough wear before I can edit them out without guilt

A classic loungewear set (e.g. sweatpants and sweatshirt) is OK. as long it is a nicer one with something special about it -cut, color, material. Third piece/blazer encouraged, and required for Zoom

I do not stick to my theme I chose for the particular season, but I do stick to the same color palette

Below are several outfits I wore this winter for WFH. The colors are black, cream, grey, purples, teals and burgundy. They are a huge improvement over the regular loungewear. Some I am completely happy with, some less so -usually the ones with several older items. However, I am trying to stick to my plan an wear those items out. I have ideas how to push myself a bit more for the spring season, will post about that some other time.

As usual, I appreciate all of your comments. I am also curious about your approach to dressing for WFH in general.

1) Black faux leather joggers, teal cowl neck top, black ponte blazer-esque topper
2) Black double jersey flare pants, teal ribbed boatneck top, old black military ponte blazer
3) Black & white windowpane joggers, purple tee with ruched sleeves, faded black textured short knit jacket
4) Great cashmere knit set of sweatshirt and jogger pants, grey faux fur zip-up topper - this was on one of those freezing days several weeks ago
5) Charcoal houndstooth joggers, old eggplant tee with open cowl back, old grey knit moto vest
6) Burgundy sweatpants, old charcoal tee, old black knit blazer
7) "Glamorous" eggplant sweatsuit: satin-y sweatshirt and wide leg pants
8) Fancy wide leg faded sweatpants, black top, old silk patterned moto cardigan
9) Black neoprene moto flare pants, black top, old cream zip up sweatshirt jacket.
