Thanks so much everyone for the advice, this forum is fantastic!
I'm all packed up and ready to head out. I've some nice light layers, linen and cotton, some cute summer dresses, skirts and pants. It's raining like crazy now because of the typhoon, so I'll buy an umbrella when I get over there.
I'll take some fun fashion pics and post when I return.

Ditto what others said. It will be humid. Comfortable stylish flats for all the walking are a good choice. Stylish Minimalism works well - wear layers you can add when indoors/remove when outside. I found sleeveless button downs (think Equipment or Everlane silk) were a stylish, comfortable and perfectly acceptable option. Tokyo is fantastic - you will love it!

Dress up. Very high style quotient in Japan.

Colleen, my son has lived in Tokyo for 6 years. People are very fashion conscious. Also, summers are very hot and humid. My son, who lived in Dallas for several years without A/C, says the Tokyo heat gets to him. I think that using linen to cover up is popular. I felt that women dressed modestly. I also had a packing thread that I will try to find. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.

I have been to Japan several times. People dress up there much more than back here in the US- think dresses, skirts, nice pants (black pants, designer jeans). No shorts and no cropped pants (ie ones that hit mid-thigh). I was also surprised that women my age (older than 50) did not wear sleeveless tops much (so I wore a sweater or jacket over mine) and did wear hose with their shoes (even sandals). Women also wore dressy heeled shoes everywhere (we even saw people hiking in high heels!).
Nonetheless, unless you are of Japanese extraction, you will stand out so just dress respectfully and comfortably.

How wonderful Colleen!
My son was working in Japan last year and I spent a few weeks in November in and around Tokyo. Am surprised that it is only forecasted to be mid 80s. Be prepared for heat. Also I found women in Tokyo to be super stylish and beautifully dressed - think big name designers like Chanel, Hermes etc. If you love sushi you will be in heaven!!

First off, Angie has travelled in Japan! Here's her packing post, but she also posted outfits from there.

And forum member Joy has also been there.

I think Ms. Mary also travelled in Japan as part of a longer trip. And I am sure others will chime in as well!

Later this week I will be taking my very first trip to Tokyo. I'm super excited! Are there any member who have been before that have some fashion/style advice for me?

The weather is forecasted to be mid-80s and raining. I'll be doing plenty of walking around Tokyo, so I need to be in functional shoes, but I want to look cute and appropriately styled too.
