Katiepea: in every scientific conference I've been in, a cute dress and boots would make you stand out, a lot. if you're fine with that, it's fine. But it's a "casua"l look for the field...even when the dress isn't casual.

Oh, I really like fathenry's suggestion of a cute dress and boots with a cardigan over the top. That way you should fit in whether it is erring more on the casual or dressy side. (That is coming from a girl who is obsessed with skirts and dresses though!)

I would take one pair of trouser jeans and either a skirt or a pair of trousers with a cardi and patterned blouse. That way you won't freeze and you have the option of switching to more or less casual as you see fit. Also, what about a cute dress and boots with a cardi over? It is easy, cute and unique!

I just got back from a scientific conference, which served a large subdivision within electrical engineering/physics, which is an extremely male-dominated field. People, including presenters, were literally all over the place...well cut european suits to t shirts and ripped cargoes. I think "nice" jeans with a dark rinse, whether bootcut or trouser, and something more formal on top: woven blouses or a jacket (which you'll probably need due to the air conditioning) over either wovens or knits. Presenters tended to shy away from jeans, but since you are not presenting I think the dark rinse jeans will be fine.

We will miss you!

How about jeans and slacks, knit tops with jackets, but woven blouses with cardigans. Wedges and your molceule necklace.

Well, I agree with Maya and your assessment too, although do you think that trouser jeans, being denim, are going to be okay? It seems that a lot of times, people wear denim to the last day of a conference, but not for the first days.

Hmm, I definitely think you're molecule necklace needs to make an appearance. It would be a great conversation starter!

Smart casual to me means jacket, jeans, and/or heels. But that sounds dressy for science, right? Maybe leave off the jacket and go for a cardigan instead, worn over a woven shirt. That way you'll be warm indoors without having to deal with too much bulk. Trouser jeans and heels should keep it a step up from your lab wear. And maybe you can even throw on a belt *gasp*

I'm not finding the word I want, so I looked at the JCrew website, how about a cardi, top and chino pant http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Brows...../95397.jsp

My department is sending us for a little 3-day science retreat next week.. It is very much like an internal conference. I will not be presenting anything, just meeting people. We will be all staying in the same isolated little hotel.

I am trying to decide what is the appropriate level of formality for this event. It is going to be warm, but AC is strong inside. It is going to be probably a bit more dressy than usual super casual lab wear, but just a little, especially since I am not presenting. So some kind of smart casual will most likely be appropriate. So maybe some version of woven top and trouser jeans? I really hate trying to figure these things out, with all the constraints of looking like you made a little effort, but not too much of it.
